CHURCH/OFFICE SUPPLIES DOING

GREAT—THANKS TO YOU We have had some great donations for the church, janitor, and office supplies. Keep it coming. We are still in need of liquid soap (refill size) and we can always use toilet paper. We have been able to

keep the budget cost down because of your wonderful donations.

SUNDAY SCHOOL HAS BEGUN But it’s not to late to get involved. Children’s Sunday school is held following worship at 11:15 am and a snack is provided. There is a table in the back of our sanctuary with activity books and reading mate-rials for children during worship. We also provide a cry room just behind the sanctuary for our restless little ones. Adult Sunday School is also held at 11:15 in the Library. Get a cup of coffee and a treat and join us for the adult class. A big thank you to all the kids that attended Sunday School on Celebration Sunday in September. We had a great time and it was so good to see all your smiling faces. Be sure and come every Sunday for more fun and exciting classes. Thanks again from all the Sunday School Teachers

CONFIRMATION CLASS Confirmation classes begin at 9:00 a.m. in the upstairs classroom. Anyone age 12 and up is wel-come to attend. Speak to Dr. Jo Elliott-Blakeslee with questions.

YOU NEED A NAME TAG

If you don’t have a name tag or have lost yours just fill out a pew card or contact the office and presto you will have your very own personalize name tag, free of charge to wear every Sunday. Help Rev. Cynthia get to know you by wearing your name tag.

WRIGHT ONES –SINGLES GROUP We are the busy “ones” and having a great time. On Sunday Oct. 7 we will be going to the Trian-gle Inn in Sweet, Idaho for a Basque dinner. It starts at 4 pm. We will meet at Carol Rivers at 3 pm and car pool over. On Saturday, Oct 27 at 6 pm come to the An-nual Halloween Party at Carol Rivers home. We will have a pot luck dinner. Come in costume for a fun time. Please contact Carol to RSVP for either or both events or with any question. We have other upcoming events planned for the rest of the year. If you are single and interested in people and fun give us a try.

NEW TABLE POLICY! Our Board of Directors has put into place a new policy effective immediately for the use of our long tables. Church members, if you are in need of a long table for a yard sale, Thanksgiving dinner, sum-mer party, etc., they are here for your use BUT you must first clear it with the office as the church has first priority for their use. You also must sign to take them out of the building. You are responsible for loading and unloading them into your vehicle and caring for them while in your possession. We no longer allow folding chairs to be taken out of the building.

NEW KEY WILL LOCK US UP!!! If you presently have a key to the basement door of the church it will no longer open that door as of NOW. All building users will be noti-fied and issued a new key. A fee of $5.00 per key will be assessed to “outside groups” to help cover the cost of the new lock and keys. Our security and safely is most important to us. If you would like to be issued a new key please see Robin.

CONGRATULATION TO AL BUSCHE

Al has just finished up his terms (yes, multiple terms) on the Pilgrim Cove Board. He has spent many, many, many hours with Pilgrim Cove in all ca-pacities. We want to thank him for all the time, energy, and faithful service he has given. Way to go Al! Pil-grim Cove Camp and Wright Church appreciates all you have done.

CONGRATULATION TO

KATIE POND AND MONTANA HAZEN who were married on September 7 at the Hazen Cabin in Stanley, Idaho. They are on a month long float trip on the Salmon River for their honeymoon and then they will decide where to set up their base camp. Montana will be looking for a nursing position and Katie works for a wilderness therapy group in Gooding. Cheers to the Newlyweds!

STEWARDSHIP NEWS The stewardship committee is getting ready to kick off the fall stewardship campaign on Sunday Oct. 14th. This year’s theme is “Delight In Giving”. Joyful giving comes from our hearts no matter what we give, whether it be time, talents, or monetary gifts. The best gifts are ones that are given purely for the joy of giving. As the apostle Paul wrote in his second letter to the Corinthians: “Each of you must give as you have made up your mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance, so that by always hav-ing enough of everything, you may share abundantly in every good work.” We can look on stewardship not as an obliga-tion, but another way to experience the “Delight In Giving”. You will be hearing more from the Steward-ship Committee as we move toward commitment Sun-day on Nov. 11th. Lois Taylor Stewardship Chair

WOMEN’S FELLOWSHIP

I desperately need some help with the upcoming rummage sale . On Thursday, October 11th I

need help sorting and setting up the donated items starting at 9:00 am. It generally does not take long – maybe Noon. On Friday we need a few people from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm to help collect

money and assisting all the customers. On Saturday we need a money taker from 9AM to Noon and from Noon to finish (1:00 pm or 2). Also, we need for several people to help box up remaining

items and deliver to the Youth Ranch (anyone with a pick up to haul the left over's would be a great help).

In November we will meet at 1:00 pm in the Social Hall for our monthly meeting. A program has not been scheduled so if you have any ideas what you would like let me know.

In December we will plan a luncheon out – location to be decided. If you can help with any of the rummage sale days, PLEASE, my phone number is in the directory.

Janice Aagaard [email protected] President

PS A number of you noted that I had the wrong dates in my previous email about the rummage sale.

These are the correct dates, Oct 11, 12, 13.

Sorry for the confusion.

No Women’s Fellowship meeting on

Wednesday, October 3. Be with us for Rummage Sale Oct. 12 and 13.

IT’S THE GREAT FALL RUMMAGE SALE COMING TO WRIGHT CHURCH

THAT SPACE FOR CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS.

BESIDES YOU KNOW YOUR KIDS REALLY DON’T WANT THOSE TREASURES, THEY ARE ACCUMULATING THEIR OWN DUST COLLECTORS. SO GIVE EM UP.

BRING THEM TO THE CHURCH ANYTIME AFTER OCTOBER 6TH

.

Notes from the Board

Love is caring, love is meeting another’s needs, love is hurting when another hurts, love is keeping faith, love is hope and belief, love is forgiving, love is gentle and kind. God in heaven is love and God’s love is pure. Jama Capshaw opened our Board meeting with a devotion on love. Thanking God for his love, we conducted the business of our Church. We are now into our fall season. Our Sunday school has started. This year we are meeting after Church. The children are welcome to attend our regu-lar service and then while adults are in coffee hour or adult Sunday school, the children will meet upstairs. We look forward to seeing all your smiling faces. Our Choir is now back from summer break. Thank you, Ron Apperson, and the Choir for the beautiful music. We are preparing our fall stewardship drive. Please begin considering your gifts to the church for next year. Our Church is behind in our budget for this year. If you are current in your pledge will you con-sider giving above your pledge? If you are behind in pledge are you able to bring your pledge current? Every penny counts! Please welcome visitors to our Church. We are creating temporary name tags to help us get to know and welcome our guests.

God is love.

Respectfully submitted, Will Patterson, Board Chair

Settled Pastor Search Committee

from Carl Van Slyke Committee Chair, Carl Van Slyke, is still look-ing for people with a calling to serve on the Settled Pastor Search Committee. Last month he outlined some of the qualifications and attitudes that those folks ask to serve should possess. In addition they need to have a faith commitment, a time commitment, a commitment to confidentiality, a commitment to openness, and a commitment to consensus. I have received some nominations of people

to serve, but still need additional nominations. I will

receive nominations until mid October, and hopefully

can have the committee ready for board approval on

October 17. If you have an interest is serving, would

like to nominate someone, or have questions I will be

in Church each Sunday in October, or give me a

phone call at 208-350-9424.

TREASURER’ S REPORT August Bal (1871.36)

As you can see we are slowly, or not so slowly, falling farther behind. If you are behind in your pledge due to summer vacations and activities it would be greatly appreciated if you could bring your pledge up to date and/or maybe give a little extra to get us through the year. Also if any group would like to hold a fund raiser to help out the General Fund that would be appreciated also.

How to EFT for WCUCC on the QT

Have you recruited your bank to help you support Wright Church on a regular basis? Let me let you in on a little secret of how you can easily improve your financial giving habits. It works for me and might be the answer for you also. I am actually a member over at Boise First UCC but in the last year I haven't been there once for Sunday worship because I was preaching at our Payette church. And I haven't written a single check to the church. In spite of that, my monthly pledge arrived at Boise First like clockwork. Is it magic? I use electronic funds transfer (EFT) to fulfill my pledge. It happens that I bank through Idaho Cen-tral Credit Union but you can do this with any bank if you have access to a computer. I set up a payment that is made automatically on the first business day of the month, every month. ICCU then writes and mails a check in that amount. There is no charge for this ser-vice; I can change the amount or stop the payments at any time. I don't have to think about it (even on va-cation) and the church receives my pledge regularly. In fact, I do think about my pledge because I want to support the work of the United Church of Christ. Over the years the amount I pledge has gone up and down as a percentage of my income but my goal is to reach 5%. Once I get there, I will set my sites higher and aim for 10%! But that is another story. Cynthia

Sep. Expense (8828.81)

Namaste I joined a group of UCC church leaders in 1976 for a working tour of India, the Philip-pines, Indonesia, and Japan. We met with leaders of our sister churches in those coun-tries, sharing ideas about the meaning of mission and discipleship.

I have many memories from that trip but one of the dearest is from a 'tourist' outing. Ar-riving in India, many of us decided to pay for a day trip to the Taj Mahal in Agra. The building and grounds are more beautiful than any photograph you have ever seen. I was struck by the fact that the Taj is in fact a tourist destination for the Indian people as well as foreigners. The Indians far outnumbered everyone else. As a relatively tall blond American woman, I stood out in the crowd. The walk along the reflecting pool to the monument entrance reinforces the grandeur of the all marble building. A small detail for the tourist is that everyone put on cotton booties over their shoes to protect the floors from the footfall of tens of thousands of steps each day. A small troop of men squatted at the entrance giving out and collect-ing the booties and one was expected to give a small tip in exchange for the service.

It is probably true that the foreign tourists tip more extravagantly than the Indian visitors because the cur-rency is so cheap and a few pennies mean almost nothing to us. As a result, the men would look for the foreigners and lift their hands but not their eyes for the pennies. That was the end of the exchange: booties for pennies. Nothing more, no more interaction than taking the booties and giving a tip. The men did it hun-dreds of times a day, day after day.

As it happens, I had learned one word in Hindi, Namaste, and I used it as I gave back my booties with a few coins. The effect was electrifying. The man looked up at me and smiled. In that instant we built a bridge across the divides of language, culture, religion, ancestry, and even gender. For one brief moment we be-came one; for my lifetime (and perhaps for his) I had a hint of what it means to belong to the human family where all people are treated with respect and kindness.

Namaste is like the Hawaiian, Aloha. It is a greeting and valediction which carries within it the idea that you are wishing the other person well. Literally, it means, 'I bow to you.' Usually you also include a slight bow of the head with hands pressed together, palms touching and fingers pointed upwards. The words and ges-ture represent the belief that there is a divine spark within each of us that is located in the heart chakra. The gesture is an acknowledgment of the soul in one by the soul in another. It is a small window between two people that lets the light of the sacred shine through. In Namaste there are no strangers, no outsiders, no visitors, no foreigners, no one to call 'other'. In Namaste there is only a single sacred life in which we all share.

Beyond just saying 'Hello' or 'How's it going?', maybe we need to resurrect the old Christian blessing, 'The Lord be with you', to remind ourselves that we all share in that single sacred life. As we get up and running in the church program year it is a good time to remember that, more important than any meeting, class, or worship service we attend, what we are really called to do is to love God by loving one another. We do this every time we greet a stranger as a friend, welcome visitors like family, and receive each other as if we were receiving God into our lives.

What would it look like at Wright Church if we had a reputation in the community of such love and accep-tance? What would it look like if our neighbors said that for us there are no strangers because everyone who walks in the door is greeted with respect and caring? I must admit that I am jealous that the television show Cheers stole the greatest theme song in the world for the local church,

Making your way in the world today takes everything you've got. Taking a break from all your worries, sure would help a lot. Wouldn't you like to get away? Sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name, and they're always glad you came.

From the Taj Mahal to a fictional bar in Boston to a small church in Boise Idaho. We are all looking for a place where folks know our name and share in our life experience.

Namaste! Cynthia
