Area Day 2017
Wrestling with God is the theme of this year’s Area Day.
Jacob’s wrestling with God/Angel as recorded in Genesis 32:22-32 is a metaphor for the journey of the ancient Hebrew people in their relation-ship with the divine. Jacob’s name is changed in this encounter to Israel, which means to wrestle with God. This metaphor is one that can also apply to our own spiritual journey.
Past evaluations and suggestions have shown a hunger for going deeper into challenges to our shared faith.
This year’s topics include wrestling with racism, doubt, forgiveness, bib-lical ethics, just to name a few. The workshops are 1 ½ hours in length and some of our presenters will do two part presentations. There will be ample time for dialogue with the presenters.
11
Great, you may be thinking, but do I have any input on this? Yes! Yes you do! At the end of the day we ask each partici-pant to complete an evaluation sheet. This tells us how we did so we can improve for next year.
We want your Feedback ...
Evaluation sheets will be provided in your registration pack-age. Fill them out as you complete your workshops and be pre-pared to hand in the completed forms together with your name tags in the baskets at the entrances to the church. The Committee uses these evaluations to help plan for the next year.
How will I know where to go?
A schedule of events, including a map, timetable and order of ser-
vice will be provided to you when you arrive.
Children’s Program for Ages 4—9
The Children’s Centre will be open at 8:30 am for children to be
dropped off by their parents or guardians to meet their Workshop
Leader, Jan Stapleton.
As in previous years, the children’s program is closely linked to the
adult programming. There is a good balance of free time, crafts,
music, science, prayer, learning and fun.
The children stay upstairs in the Good Shepherd Centre for the ma-
jority of the day and go downstairs for the service, where they meet
their guardians or parents at the front of the church.
The theme for this year is “Wrestling with God”. We will think
about what it means for us to wrestle with God when we are won-
dering where God is in our lives.
Jan Stapleton,
Children’s Workshop Leader

Douglas Graydon, Death and Dying
Morning: I Want to Go; Will You Still Bless Me? Pastoral Re-
sponses to Assisted Dying. Workshop Code—AM 01
Since the legalization of medical assistance in dying, (MAID), end-
of-life choices have taken on a radically different dimension. While
individual choice now allows for assisted dying, families and com-
munities will be challenged to discern how they can best support
those who chose assisted dying. This workshop will explore assisted
dying legislation with a focus upon the faith based questions which
arise from this new law. Participants will be invited to explore their
own thoughts, feelings and faith beliefs regarding end-of-life choic-
es including assisted dying..
Afternoon: Embracing End-of-Life: Conversations with Fami-
ly and Caregivers. Workshop Code—PM 01
When we sit down with our loved ones to discuss difficult matters
such as wills, advance health-care directives and end-of-life choices,
we are in a way discussing not only the wishes of those whom we
love, but our own personal values and faithful beliefs as well. How
we approach such conversations, how we ground ourselves emo-
tionally, intellectually and spiritually can enhance difficult conversa-
tions making them a source of comfort and even joy. Participants
will be invited to reflect upon their experiences of difficult conver-
sations and to explore together the “nuts and bolts” of how to
make difficult conversations easier.
Handy Tip: The Workshop Codes are for the Registration sheet.

Patrick Gray, Do I Really Have to Believe? Wrestling with Faith. Wrestling with Doubt. Workshop Code—PM 06
Do I really have to believe that? ……… an explanation of theological issues that trouble parishioners when there doesn’t seem to be clear answer. This forum will provide an opportunity to discuss doctrinal issues that you find particularly troubling. Come equipped with ques-tions.
Ann Smith, Wrestling with Forgiveness. Workshop Code AM 06
We all wrestle with forgiveness. “How many times must I for-give?” “Forgive us our sins as we forgive.” What does that mean in our Christian life? We think that it is about forgiving and forgetting, but it truly is about re-membering, about coming back into relation-ship with God and with others.
Beck Schaefer and Margaret Rodrigues, Caring for Transgender People and Their Families: Exploring Trans Experience. Work-shop Code— PM 07
Trans people continue to experience high degrees of marginalization
and exclusion in many faith communities. This workshop will engage
in theological reflection and the sharing of personal experience to
highlight the ways in which Trans people can be more fully welcomed
into our families, parishes, and wider communities.

Lesley Barclay and Elizabeth McCaffrey, Wrestling with Conflict in the Parish. Workshop Code—PM 05
Conflict has existed in Christian communities since the time of Paul and Barnabas (Acts 15:36-41).
Healthy conflict can move a parish and its members into vibrant ministry. However, unhealthy conflict can destroy a parish and indi-vidual members within that parish. Conflict has many sources, in-cluding miscommunication, disagreements, stress and personality differences. This workshop will teach dispute resolution techniques and through role play model ways to manage conflict more effec-tively.
Susan Spicer and Christian Harvey, Friendship in the Wilderness: Youth and the Church. Workshop Code—AM 05
This workshop focuses on how churches can grow sustainable youth ministries. Drawing on their own experiences, Susan and Christian will examine common assumptions about youth ministry and discuss the importance of relationship-building. This “missional” approach begins with meeting young people where they are.
Handy Tip: The Workshop Codes are for the Registration sheet.

Brother Reginald Crenshaw, Let’s Wrestle Together: Dismantling Racism in Our Parishes. Workshop Code—AM 03
This workshop examines how church and society struggle with rac-ism. Brother Reg will define both racism and anti-racism, and con-nect anti-racism to Scripture. The workshop will explore how engag-ing in anti-racism work on the parish level connects us to God’s Mission for the world.
Afternoon: Let’s Continue the Wrestle: Conversation, Film, Discussion, & Case Study. Workshop Code—PM 03
Using a film and case study to spur discussion, this workshop en-courages participants to reflect on their own experiences, percep-tions, and beliefs about race and race relations. Eric Beresford, Learning Faithful Living: Biblical Ethics – Modern Lives. Workshop Code—PM 04
We often have to make decisions on matters that would have been unimaginable to earlier generations. How do the diverse materials that make up the Bible support us in the complex task of making moral decisions today? How do we learn to listen faithfully and crea-tively to the story of God's dealings with the people of God as indi-viduals and as communities?
Sister Elizabeth Rolfe-Thomas, Praying through the dark times of our lives. Workshop Code—AM 04
We’ve all experienced some of the dark emotions of fear or guilt, grief or despair, anger or loneliness. Sometimes we may sense a deep gulf between ourselves and God when we’re in the depths. Can we bring our inner darkness to God? Will God understand? How can we reach out to God?
