When an individual experiences a life-changing event, he or she has the opportunity
to discover a new life! New strength, New independence. Often, those with little
hope of simply walking on their own, have regained peace of mind. Your support
makes all this possible.
We are launching our 2016 Year-End Appeal for donations. The goal is to help as
many as possible improve their quality of life. Soon we will embark on our 117th
year. St. Barnabas has always operated on a sound financial basis. You can rest
assured that your donation will go directly to provide care and compassionate
services for all those in need.
Will you, right now, make a special year end, tax-deductible donation to help us
meet our goal? We simply cannot do it without you. We need you to make a real,
lasting impact in the lives of all patients. Visit StBarnabasHealthSystem.com and

on page 7.
Just before Faith & Work went to print, Mary Ricciardi died. Our thoughts and sympathies are with her family.
About 116 years ago, St. Barnabas started to find space for
those in need. First, the Free Nursing Home. Then, the
Medical Center and The Village at St. Barnabas, followed
by Valencia Woods at St. Barnabas, The Washington Place,
The Woodlands and The Arbors at St. Barnabas. All are
Christian endeavors. We try our best to find space for
persons who come to us for help, for care, for security.
We are not the St. Barnabas Inn, but we try to be a good
example of what Christians can do for others regardless of
their faith, their station in life or their needs. For decades,
thousands of persons have given a gift each year to
St. Barnabas and we pray that this will be the year for you.
The Word became flesh in Bethlehem a long time ago.
Faith and work have preserved the Word over many years
through individuals such as you and me. We are obligated
to share our Christian faith through the generous giving of
our time, our talents and our treasure.
Please remember to go to church, to thank God for
His blessings and to help Christian charities such as
St. Barnabas and your local organizations.
Merry Christmas and God Bless,
WVD
A Mess age f rom W i l l i a m V . D a yDo the “Inn Thing”
The Inn season is upon us. In the coming days, we
will once again read and hear about a very
special young couple and how they did their Inn
Thing. They were Villagers by background and they
found no room at an Inn where they needed space. It
wasn’t even a holiday season in those days!
If only the manager or desk clerk of the Inn had known!
It may have been the forerunner of the Bethlehem
Holiday Inn which claimed “no vacancy.” Of course, how
was the Innkeeper to know about the imminent arrival of
that Special One? Maybe he would have rooms the next
day or the next year.
But space for Mary and Joseph was offered. And a free
gift was given to the world and it has never been the
same. Jesus was born in that stable in the Middle East
more than two thousand years ago. It was the center of
the world then and it is now.
It took some 32 years for Jesus to fulfill His mission
here on earth, from the humble beginning
near an Inn to a torturous cross at
Calvary. Perhaps one of the
lessons we all should
learn is that good
things do take time to
accomplish. Perhaps
decades.

FAITH & WORK 6
My fondest memories of Christmas are those of my childhood
when Christmas began well after Thanksgiving and focused on
church and family. Our parents told the story of Jesus’ birth,
explained why we exchanged gifts and why we are visited by a Saint named
Nicholas. Those were days of joy and wonder, music and worship.
Of course, those idyllic memories have long been eclipsed by the almost
complete commercialization of Christmas. The season begins in early Fall
with store decorations, piped music and the daily arrival of catalogs
hawking gifts that are not needed. We read about Christmas “success”
measured by retail sales rather than how many people celebrated the birth
of Christ. Yet despite this adulteration of what should be a sacred holiday,
there are still ways to recapture the spirit and importance of Christmas.
Several years ago I was introduced to a program begun by the president of
St. Barnabas, Bill Day. His very simple but elegant idea was to identify
patients in health care facilities who had been abandoned or forgotten by
circumstances or uncaring families. Patients who were not likely to receive
a visit or a gift during the Christmas season. Once identified, the patients
would be visited by volunteers bringing small gifts and wishing them a merry
and blessed Christmas.
Bill Day’s idea became a wonderful program called PRESENTS FOR PATIENTS®
which is now in its 33rd year and has created visits and brought gifts to
thousands of grateful recipients.
I became a volunteer and in doing so recaptured the spirit of Christmas in
my life. Those fading memories of my childhood Christmas celebrations
had been rekindled by the sparks of happiness I felt by making someone’s
Christmas a little brighter.
Since that first enlightening visit, I have become a dedicated volunteer for
PRESENTS FOR PATIENTS®, visiting a nursing home every year. Most often
I am now accompanied by a group of Boy and/or Girl Scouts who sing
carols, help deliver presents and make Christmas
memories that will be forever cherished.
If you, your organization, company or family want to
inject some cheer in your lives and the lives of others
this Christmas, consider joining the many volunteers at
PRESENTS FOR PATIENTS®. I promise you will remember
Christmas in a way for which the holiday was originally
created. Please join us! Call 724-443-0011 or go
online: PresentsForPatients.com.

Long-time PRESENTS FOR PATIENTS® donors have

meaningful workOne of the most important things
people learn early on in life is
Nothing is Free! Everything we do,
become or want has a cost. In my latest
book, Square One: A Simple Guide to a
Balanced Life, I reveal the terrible cost I
paid trying to have it all and the lessons I
eventually learned to rebalance my life and
start living again as a whole person.
I suffered from an extreme case of career
burnout. Burnout in America is not just
people working longer and harder but the
extreme toll it takes on your health, family
and social interactions. Eighty-three
percent of workers now say they’re stressed
about their jobs and nearly 50 percent say
work-related stress is interfering with
their sleep. Fatigue, cynicism, substance
abuse, poor judgement and discontent
with co-workers are also common
symptoms of burnout.
Using my own life changing events, I
provide numerous insights and proven
tools that can help prevent burnout and
stress. In my book, I discuss four critical
elements to balanced living: attention to
diet and exercise, meaningful work,
maintaining relationships and the
gift of spirituality. Ideally, each should
be equal in importance for a balanced
life, similar to four sides to a square.
Whether you read this book or not, it is
important to find balance in your life.
Think of the four sides of a square and
strive to include each side in your life daily.

LIGHTSOF LIFE
FAITH & WORK 10
Memory Care Specialist Anna Foust and Richard Markin enjoy the last warm days of Fall near The Arbors waterfall.
A cherry coke at an old fashioned
soda fountain brought Richard and
MaryAnn Markin together 65 years
ago…not to be separated until MaryAnn’s
death on Jan. 15, 2016.
Richard, a pharmacy intern, was a soda
jerk and MaryAnn became his life partner.
Their memories and the care and love of
family and the staff at St. Barnabas have
kept Richard going since he lost MaryAnn.
“The staff promised my Mom they would
look after him,” their daughter Margaret
Martin, Director of Advancement at Vincentian
Academy, said. “And she told us to ‘to take
care of your Dad.’”
The Markins had moved to The Arbors at
St. Barnabas in Valencia in February, 2013.
MaryAnn had had a stroke and she and
Richard came to live with Margaret and her
husband Jeff in Zelienople, PA. The Martins,
who both worked, soon realized that this
was not the solution – Richard would forget
the soup boiling over on the stove and then
MaryAnn fell down the stairs. St. Barnabas
was the answer.
“Mom and Dad absolutely loved St. Barnabas,”
Margaret explained. “They were allowed to
stay together and they had freedom – a
feeling of independence in their private
room in the Penthouse, yet there was the
St. Barnabas staff looking after them. This
made us feel good.”
Born and raised in Ohio, Richard received
his degree in pharmacy from the University
of Toledo and went on to own his own
Rexall Pharmacy in Toledo. He worked at
St. Vincent Hospital in Toledo for 15 years.
MaryAnn was an aide in the school system
and very active in the community, always
volunteering Richard.
They had three daughters: Margaret, Diane
of El Segundo, CA, and Patricia of Concord,
NC, and eventually two grandchildren and
eight great-grandchildren.
“Mom and Dad had a wonderful 65 years
together,” Margaret confided, “ first in
Toledo, and then 20 years of retirement in
Parrish, FL, doing whatever they wanted.
They traveled extensively and loved to throw
parties and to dance.”
FAITH & WORK 11
Take Care of Dad
MaryAnn attended classes at Ringling
Brothers University in Sarasota, FL, and
became involved in clown ministry,
volunteering at area hospitals and nursing
homes. Her clown name was Peanuts.
The Markins had many wonderful memories
and they continued to store up memories at
St. Barnabas where they participated in all
the Village get-togethers, the ice cream socials
and birthday parties where they became the
entertainment, singing and dancing.
“They loved to waltz,” Margaret added. “That’s
how I think of them, together, waltzing.
Mom is just waiting for Dad to join her in a
waltz. And in the meantime, St. Barnabas is
watching over Dad for her and for us.”
For Richard and MaryAnn Markin and
their family, the St. Barnabas experience
has been and continues to be a blessing.
If you would like to help other less
fortunate patients, please send a donation
to St. Barnabas Charities in the enclosed
yellow envelope or give online at
St.BarnabasCharities.com.

Memory
From spoon playing to sing-a-longs
to movies and Mass, Charles
Hinkle did it all and won the
hearts of fellow residents and staff at
The Village at St. Barnabas.
Charles and his wife Alice moved into The
Village Oct. 5, 2010 planning to enjoy
St. Barnabas together. Unfortunately, just
one month later, Alice died. Determined to
carry on, Charles jumped into St. Barnabas
activities, feet first, full throttle and never
cut back until his death in August 2016.
Born in Sunbury, PA, 90 years ago,
Charles served as a Radio man in the
U.S. Navy during WW II. After the war
he earned an electrical engineering
degree from Bucknell University and
worked for General Electric for more
than 30 years in Lynne, Mass., Syracuse,
NY, Philadelphia and finally Pittsburgh,
PA, retiring in 1986. For more than 15
years he worked at St. Clair Country Club,
mowing the grass on the golf course, a
job he loved. A dedicated gardener, he
liked to be outdoors and continued to
garden at St. Barnabas.
“What he most enjoyed,” his daughter,
Diane Baldwin, of Cocoa Beach, FL,
confided, “was making people laugh,
entertaining them. He did that at
St. Barnabas.”
Charlie learned to play the spoons and
delighted in performing for the residents.
He also took piano lessons at The Village
and played a mean “Chop Sticks.” One
of his favorite people at St. Barnabas was
Pam Fickes, retired St. Barnabas Recre-
ation Director now working part-time.
“He was a great help,” Pam said. “ Every
Friday morning he would set up and serve
at Mass. On Friday evening he was the
‘movie man,’ selecting films, running the
DVD player and acting as usher. Thursdays
was sing-a-long time. He assisted the
leader and when she was absent, donned
a black wig and dress and led the singing.
On Saturdays it was bingo. And when the
entertainment ran late, he would stay to
the end and turn off the lights, so I could
go home to my family, “
“He did so many kindnesses for the
residents and staff, cleaning off snow
from their cars, buying monthly birthday
cakes for his neighbors,” Pam added.
“He thrived at St. Barnabas,” his
daughter Diane said. “The last six years
of his life were full to overflowing.
When he was diagnosed with cancer, he
was disappointed that his life was
coming to an end. He kept volunteering
until just two weeks before his death.”
Diane and her husband Ted left their
home in Florida and rented an apartment
in Pittsburgh to be near Charlie the last
months of his life.
“He held on tight to his life, the life he
had made for himself with his friends at
St. Barnabas,” Diane said.
Charlie Hinkle died Aug. 4, 2016. More
than 70 of his friends attended the
services for this kind, gentle, loving man.
Please join us in honoring the
memory of Charles Hinkle with a gift
in his name to St. Barnabas Charities.
You may send your gift in the
