this family that helped shaped our country.
It is wonderful spending time with friends over a hot cup of tea and dessert; but in this afternoon tea we
will also explore famous people of past and present society who have made a difference in the world.
Kayti Meehan
At its height in the eighth to seventh century b.c., the Assyrian Empire was the dominant power of the
ancient Near East and the largest empire the world had yet seen, reaching from Assyria (present-day
northern Iraq) to the Mediterranean. As Assyria expanded, the Phoenician city-states of the
Levant—precariously located along the edge of Assyrian territory—were compelled to expand and
strengthen their maritime trade networks to the west. The mercantile connections they established
along the northern coast of Africa and the southern coast of Europe to the Strait of Gibraltar and
beyond, to the Atlantic, became conduits for raw materials, luxury goods, images, and ideas between
the Near East and the Mediterranean.

This was a time of glorious mansions; artist detail was evident in structures and homes everywhere.
Formal attire was worn at the numerous gala events held in grand ballrooms. The very best of
furnishings was often ordered from abroad. The well-to-do pumped salt water into their summer homes
for a healing bath. A staff of many cared for the homes and the children of these socialites. We will
journey through the lives of many of these families such as the Vanderbilt’s and the Edward Berwind
Family their mansions in Newport, Rhode Island are magnificent. Starting on Monday, September 8th
we will explore the history of this time on Mondays for the month of September. The second part of this
program will be a visual tour of the summer homes that still exist today and are viewed by thousands
every year.
They appeared in a period of upheaval. They saw the rebuilding of Paris, the rise of industrialism, the
ruin of the Franco-Prussian war. They displayed their startling and shocking works in a series of
exhibitions from 1874 to 1886. And by the 1890s, this "loose coalition" of artists who rebelled against
the formality of the French Academy had created the most famous artistic movement in history. "They"
were the Impressionists, and Professor Brettell is your expert curator and guide to a movement that
created a new, intensely personal vision of the world.
This program is for the light of heart! Aren’t we all looking for the answers? A general reading of the
Tarot Cards can prove to be very interesting and a lot of fun. You will be amazed as to how accurate the
cards may be at times. We may never know what the future holds for us but certainly having a card
reading can be very creative! The best part is waiting to see if there are significant changes in your life
that the cards foretell. Town Center residents are welcome to attend.

As we research the time of elegance we will produce beautiful Victorian Trinket Boxes as they would
have been made by women and artisans of the time. We will be using lace, and ribbons, beads and
shiny gold paint. These decorative boxes were often very ornate and were symbols of the interest of the
creators.
Two Sundays a month we will choose a resident’s hometown and ask the resident to talk about growing
up there. We will also engage in conversation about the history of the town and what makes their town
so special. This program is all about memories, history and the taste of the city!
Can you stump the others? This guessing game makes us use our imagination and creativity in
pretending to be a historic or famous figure. At first the clues are difficult, the more clues that are given
the easier for others to guess who you are pretending to be. The best clue yet was “I am not a human or
animal but I am in the entertainment world?” “I am only three feet tall”. He was Charlie McCarthy a
wooden puppet!
