The explosive title track that wraps the 11-song collection is thematic, belying its seemingly cheery title to take a tough-edged look at the precarious times we live in. Ever the observant storyteller, Lowery calls it like he sees it: the affluence and wealth America seemed to have these past decades was built on a mirage. The Budos Band’s fi rst single from their forthcoming LP is the Afro-rock burner, “Unbroken Unshaven”, which is available exclusively from the iTunes store.

Having scalded listeners’ ears with sonic lava on Budos I and stung them with venomous frequencies on Budos II,

The Budos Band delivers on their promise to spread the epidemic of “Budos Fever” far and wide with the release of The Budos Band III. Taking a new approach to their creative process, Sunrise In the Land of Milk and Honey is a truly collaborative effort for the band. Suprisingly self-disciplined, the whole band would take time out to write together one week every two months between tours

over the course of a year. Focusing on a goal of two songs per day, their individual musical infl uences combined in refreshing and distinctive ways. On the outside it was a straight-ahead work ethic, but the process resulted in the band clicking creatively with a renewed energy.

On Wednesday, August 25, Square Peg Concerts welcomes ‘hometown boy makes good’ Mat Kearney back to the WOW Hall with special guest Katie Herzig.

When you record the type of smart, catchy songs Mat Kearney cut for his 2006 album Nothing Left to Lose, you end up spending a lot of time on the road. And after that album’s title track throttled up the charts, that’s exactly what Kearney did. Three years later, he returns with City of Black & White, an album informed by the traveling, performing and adventuring the Oregon-born, Nashville-based singer did while supporting his breakthrough album.

An openhearted album of self-discovery, City of Black & White is a chronicle of the people he met and missed during that journey. Musically, it’s an upping of the ante, laced with hooks and rhythms that are meant to sneak up on you quietly and quickly, en route to winning your love.

If Nothing Left to Lose sent Kearney on a marathon tour — during which he opened for the likes of John Mayer, Sheryl Crow and The Fray — it also built up to an eventual happy return to Nashville, his home for the past eight years. And City of Black & White defi nitely refl ects that, as it’s marked by the pride and happiness that comes with spending fi ve years trying to make it, and then fi nally getting there.

“At its core, this record is about community — fi nding it and losing it,” he says. “There’s defi nitely the theme of this traveling/sojourner/vagabond kind of guy landing in the midst of people that he loves, and who love him — guy/girl, musician, old people, all of that. It feels as if the traveling sojourner of Nothing Left to Lose has found a home, a group of companions, and a love. Many of the songs deal with what happens after that — after someone digs roots, allows himself to fall in love, to clasp arms with a brother, to dig in through high moments as well as the painful ones. It speaks of vulnerability more than distance — a place where someone can be pinned down to perseverance and heartbreak.”

Fitting for such a well-traveled

writer, some of the songs took route in places as varied as Oregon and Turkey.

“During a recent visit home, I broke into the University of Oregon music room, which was under construction,” he laughs. “I jimmied the door open and climbed down this balcony. I wrote ‘Straight Away’ there. ‘City of Black & White’ was born on a ferry as I crossed the Bosphorus River, which splits Istanbul in two as well as acting as an invisible dividing line between two continents.”

Co-produced by Kearney and Nothing Left to Lose helmsman Robert Marvin, and recorded last year at Blackbird Studios in Nashville — where Jack White and Martina McBride and even Nicole Kidman were working in neighboring rooms — the album fi nds Kearney going for a bigger sound — and getting it.

“It actually ended up sounding bigger than I expected; big in a late-’80s/epic kind of way. I knew that I wanted the whole record to feel good when I put it on. I wanted the drums and bass to demand something of your body, I wanted the songs to come to life when I played them live. I had been listening to a lot of Sam Cooke and I wanted the rhythm sections to make your head bob before you could decide if you liked the songs… I literally approached every song like I wanted it to feel good.”

Raised by hippie parents in Oregon, Kearney didn’t write his fi rst song until midway through college. Once in Nashville, he slept on a friend’s couch for what seemed like an eternity before cutting his debut album Bullet in 2004. Three years later, and thanks in large part to VH1 — which kept “Nothing Left to Lose” in rotation for 45 consecutive weeks before sending Kearney out as the headliner of the channel’s fi rst You Oughta Know tour — he was playing Madison Square Garden and appearing on The Late Show With David Letterman. His songs “Nothing Left to Lose,” “Undeniable” and “Breathe In Breathe Out” all cracked the Top 40.

“It still feels surreal every night,” says Kearney. “I feel like I may be fooling someone, like

the audience is going to one day prove to be all cardboard cutouts or something. I’m so grateful and honored to be doing what I’m doing.”

In 2006, after several years of fronting the critically acclaimed Colorado-based band Newcomers Home, Katie Herzig moved to Nashville to strike it solo. She single-handedly recorded and produced Weightless, a tour-de-force of innovative sonics and songwriting. Since then, Katie’s song “Heaven’s My Home” received a 2007 Grammy nomination and she has steadily become a fi xture in Nashville’s up-and-coming indie music scene. Her songs have been featured in several episodes of television’s highest rated drama, Grey’s Anatomy. Katie was featured in Billboard Magazine’s “Now Hear This” and was named one of PASTE Magazine’s 25 “Best of What’s Next” artists.

Herzig’s most recent studio record, Apple Tree, birthed the songs “Wish You Well”, “Hologram”, “I Hurt Too” and “Forevermore”. Her latest release, Live in Studio: Acoustic Trio, is a uniquely immersive listening experience that perfectly captures her live performance with bandmates Claire Indie (cello) and Jordan Hamlin (guitar, ukulele, accordion).

On Wednesday, September 1, the CCPA welcomes Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros back to the WOW Hall.

“At fi rst glance, Alex Ebert, the lead singer and founder of the sprawling ‘70s-inspired 10-piece indie-rock band Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, simply looks like a homeless hipster Jesus,” reports Charleston City Paper. “It’s perhaps an unlikely intersect, but when it’s revealed that the former frontman from Ima Robot conceived of the Sharpe persona as a musical messiah meant to spread the word of love ... well, just take a listen to the songs on the band’s fi rst album, Up From Below.

Every aspect of Ebert’s vision crystallizes beautifully, as if by design from a maybe-mad prophet-genius.”

Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros made their WOW Hall debut on December 10, 2009. Their fi rst full-length recording, Up from Below, was released during the summer of ‘09 on Vagrant Records. Their song “Home” was voted number 15 on the Australian Triple J Hottest 100, 2009 countdown, the largest music poll in the world.

After breaking up with his girlfriend, moving out of his house, and joining a 12-step program for addiction, Alex Ebert began work on a story

about a messianic fi gure named Edward Sharpe. According to Ebert, Sharpe “was sent down to Earth to kinda heal and save mankind...but he kept getting distracted by girls and falling in love.” Ebert later met singer Jade Castrinos in Los Angeles. In the summer of 2009, as Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, Ebert and Castrinos toured the country with a group of fellow musicians in a big white school bus.

The Santa Barbara Independent notes that, “While the sheer balance of the Zeros’ over-the-top instrumentation plays a large part in the band’s magnetism, it’s the dynamic

between Ebert and frontlady Jade Castrinos that ultimately pushes the band’s live show to such soaring heights.”

The current band members are Alex Ebert (vocals, guitar, percussion, piano), Jade Castrinos (vocals, guitar), Nico Aglietti (guitar, synthesizer, keyboards, vocals), Stewart Cole (trumpet, percussion, keyboards, tenor ukulele, vocals), Tay Strathairn (piano, vocals), Airin Older (bass, vocals, banjo, percussion), Josh Collazo (drums, percussion, vocals), Orpheo McCord (percussion, vocals), Nora Kirkpatrick (accordion, vocals) and Christian Letts (guitar, vocals).

“Sharpe and the band have made a strong case for spreading euphoric joy around the world with their music,” Charleston City Paper reports. “Judging by their ever-widening fan base, it won’t be too hard. Their sound is undeniably catchy, with every melody like peanut butter — sticky to the roof of your mouth. And every tune is surprisingly sophisticated for a sprawling jam band. Ebert’s a goofy, gangly lead singer, but his enthusiasm sweeps the band into a blissed-out frenzy, and damnit if the mood isn’t contagious. That might very well demonstrate that Ebert really does possess the magic of a divine messenger.”

Tickets are $13 in advance, $15 at the door. Doors open at 7:00 pm and showtime is 8:00. ★

On Sunday, August 15, Big Towne Productions welcomes the BoDeans touring in support of their brand new album, Mr. Sad Clown.

Nearly three decades ago, the BoDeans were formed when Kurt Neumann and Sammy Llanas initiated a unique singing and songwriting partnership in Waukesha, Wisconsin. The partnership was built on give and take, whether in the trading of lyrical or melodic ideas, an exchange of guitar riffs, or the blending of vocal harmonies. As frontmen for what would become one of America’s premier roots-rock bands, the duo forged a signature sound based on heartfelt lyrics, passionate harmonies and ringing guitars.

The distinct sound of the BoDeans fi rst emerged on their critically acclaimed debut, Love & Hope & Sex & Dreams, which also saw production by T-Bone Burnett. Released on Slash/Warner Bros. in 1986, the album reached 115 on the Billboard charts and quickly propelled the group into the national spotlight.

This initial success for the BoDeans would soon be surpassed by their 1987 release, Outside Looking In, which broke into the Billboard Top 100. A tour with U2, an appearance on Robbie Robertson’s self-titled debut solo

album, and being named “Best New Band” by Rolling Stone magazine that same year only added fuel to the group’s already-blazing fi re.

As if to confi rm the status they had achieved, the BoDeans went on to release yet another Top 100 bestseller, 1989’s Home. The record was followed by Black And White in 1991, and by 1993, there was an urge for the group to return to their roots. The BoDeans decided to reenlist T-Bone Burnett for the production of Go Slow Down, which ultimately yielded the Party Of Five theme song, “Closer To Free”. In 1996, around the time their sixth studio album, Blend, was released, “Closer To Free” found a home in Billboard’s Top 10. The song catapulted the BoDeans to even greater heights, and earned an ASCAP award for being one of the most played songs on radio that year.

After releasing both a Best of and a rarities collection in the early

2000s, the BoDeans returned in 2004 with Resolution, on Rounder/Zoe. The album’s single “If It Makes You” quickly jumped into the Top 10, where it resided for several weeks. Homebrewed: Live From The Pabst was released the following year on Back Porch/EMI, and the BoDeans, without skipping a beat, began writing Still, which saw release in 2008.

In an industry where careers can be shorter than the duration of a song, the BoDeans have proven their longevity. The partnership between Kurt Neumann and Sammy Llanas has remained steadfast since the early ‘80s, withstanding the test of time and various all-star lineups. Despite an impressive past that includes eight albums in the Billboard Top 200 and multiple singles in the Top 40, the BoDeans — and more importantly, the partnership that is its core — aren’t about to call it quits anytime soon.

Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 at the door. Doors open at 6:00 pm and showtime is 7:00. ★

On Saturday, August 21, Monqui Presents welcomes The Hold Steady back to the WOW Hall with special guest Jaill.

The Hold Steady is: Craig Finn, Tad Kubler, Galen Polivka and Bobby Drake.

The band is on a North American tour this summer in support of their new album Heaven Is Whenever, released May 4 on Vagrant Records.

Raves for Heaven Is Whenever are rolling in, with Rolling Stone.com calling the new songs “insanely great,” and adding, “these guys have only been making records for what, six years now, and they’ve made fi ve of the best albums released in that time span - who gets on a roll like that?”

Here’s some other reviews:“A carousel of regret,

defi ance, and romance, turned up to 11.” — Village Voice.com

“Over ten alternately dejected and hopeful tracks, we get big, meaty riffs; clever, chatty wordplay.” — NY Mag.com

“Tremendous guitar riffs still reside at the foreground of these well-written anthems.” — NPR.org

“Craig Finn’s lyrics house the crass beauty of a worn-down dweller of the turning century, making this album a movie I’d pay ten bucks to see.” — Filter

Following the release of 2008’s critically acclaimed Stay Positive, which gave the band it’s highest Billboard chart position yet, The Hold Steady toured relentlessly, playing to some of their biggest audiences to date. The band has recently been busy performing songs from Heaven Is Wheneveron national television programs including the Late, Late Show with Craig Ferguson, the Late Show with David Letterman, and did a sit down interview as well as perform on The Colbert Report.

The Hold Steady has been lauded for the scope, depth, truth and heart they bring to chronicling the American rock myth. Heaven Is Whenever was produced by Dean Baltulonis, who also engineered the

band’s Almost Killed Me and produced Separation Sunday, and was recorded at Dreamland Recording Studios in Upstate NY and Wild Arctic Studios in Queens, NY.

Singer Craig Finn says Heaven Is Whenever is about, “embracing suffering and understanding its place in a joyful life. The lyrics speak a lot about struggle and reward.”

Piano and keys take a backseat to guitar on the new record, which also gets production help from guitarist Tad Kubler.

“I really believe the album exposes new elements of the band that we hinted at on other records but weren’t able to fully realize until this one,” says Kubler. “Rather than just concentrate on changes in the instrumentation, we made changes to the song writing process.”

Recorded in several sessions spread out over a long period of time, the songs on Heaven Is Whenever received the benefi t of being tested on the band’s recent tours. There was also a makeshift recording booth set up on the back of their tour bus so songs and musical ideas could be documented as they developed. Finn says this allowed them to, “see what was working and what wasn’t. I believe this record benefi ts from us working at a more deliberate pace.”

Vincent Kircher, Austin Dutmer, Andrew Harris and Ryan Adams are a somewhat sneaky, rarely sleazy group of guys from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Together,

they are Jaill, a self-described psych-pop combo who play with undeniable guts.

Kircher and Dutmer started Jaill back in 2002. They had a winning formula: up-tempo, guitar-driven twang with punk attitude courtesy of Kircher’s deeply wry lyrics — disarmingly cheerful at surface level. But dive into the lyrics and things get weird. Jaill hooks the ears with upbeat pop and garage elements which grow deliciously darker upon further investigation. It’s confusion in a major key.

In early 2009, Jaill released There’s No Sky (Oh My My), a 12-song LP that is irresistibly catchy, moving, dirty, sarcastic and new. Recorded nervously in the leaky basement of an old funeral home, There’s No Skycaught the attention of Sub Pop. Standout tracks like “Always Wrong” and “Beggar Sincere” recall the glory of ’90s lo-fi pop.

Jaill’s new album, That’s How We Burn, was released on July 27 bearing the proud endorsement of their new label home, but the Milwaukee band has changed little in their creative tactics. The album fi nds Jaill wrapping its head and arms more solidly around a sound they’ve been building up for nearly a decade. Their ‘Sconnie sensibilities lend to a laid-back but creatively effortless brand of pop that is now making waves outside the environs of Lake Michigan.

Tickets are $16 in advance, $18 at the door. Doors open at 7:00 pm and showtime is 8:00. ★

have spanned the US, Canada, and Europe, playing rock clubs and large festival stages, The Budos have developed a rabid fan base that spans genres and ages. At any given Budos show, one might see b-boys break dancing to the band’s funk and hip-hop beats; record junkies nodding their heads to the soul-infused melodies; metal heads thrashing to the dark and ominous guitar and bass riffs; and general music lovers who eagerly attend Budos shows and smile approvingly at the melting pot of music that takes place. Simply put, The Budos kill the live show and with each record, their ability to put the energy, sweat, and passion of the live experience to wax increases.

The sound of The Budos may be challenging for some to describe, but to the band, “Staten Island instrumental afro-soul” means internalizing such seemingly disparate infl uences as the Cairo Jazz Band, J.C. Davis, Mulatu Astatke, and Black Sabbath and coming together to form a mind-bending combination of rhythm and melody.

Basin & Range is a constantly evolving entity, diffi cult to label, undeniably funky, occasionally reckless and sure to get your body moving in ways you cannot practice. These four misfi ts draw on a wide variety of infl uences — merging elements of funk, psychedelia, hip hop and dirty electro-grit into a sound that is wholly original. Instrumental by nature, B&R has been wrecking dance fl oors all over the Northwest since 2005, bringing a new spin on instrumental dance music.

“Not content to simply make groovy jazz or nasty funk, the band combines both of these styles with R&B and rock to make for one heck of a dance party,” reports Eugene Weekly.

Tickets are $15 in advance, $18 at the door. Doors open at 8:00 pm and showtime is 9:00. ★

On Saturday, August 14, Mackdub presents Summerjam 2010 featuring performances by Mackdub, Todd G, Endr1, Drops, Kent B, Dirty Kane and more!

Mackdub is an Oregon rap legend. For over twenty years he’s been a breakdancer, popper, graffi ti artist, hustla, mentor and the ultimate example of a fi ve tool player in hip hop.

Mack is the founder of Eugene’s hip hop version of Summerjam (originally called Rhymefest), and a Pillar in his community — producing music, promoting shows, and performing live for literally thousands and thousands of hip hop heads over the years.

Mackdub has shared the stage and opened for many acts including: The Game, Lil Wayne, Bone Thugs N Harmony,Twisa, Fat Joe, Naughty By Nature, Digital Underground, Sean Kingston, Charlie Murphy, Andre Nickatina, Mr. F.A.B., Turff Talk and Cool Nutz. Mack has mentored and done music with some of the best MCs Oregon has to offer including Dzo, JB Evil Michael Kay, Todd G, Greenstate, Trippa Tak, Indo, Loon, A-Non and countless other rappers and musicians.

Tickets are $10 in advance or at the door. Doors open at 8:00 pm and showtime is 9:00. ★

On Friday, August 6, the Community Center for the Performing Arts and 101.5 “Oregon’s Real Rock” KFLY proudly host Boot Fest III featuring performances by New World Sinner and Only Nightmares along with special guests We Have Guns, Harness and I Am Ruin.

This is the third year in a row that Boots of Little Devil Records has celebrated his birthday by organizing a showcase for Eugene hard rock and metal bands (the second at the WOW Hall). All have featured Boots’ own band, New World Sinner, plus an assortment of the region’s hardest rocking bands.

New World Sinner is a brutal straight up heavy metal band based out of Eugene. N.W.S was formed in January 2008 by: Boots, Angie Anderson, Matt Anderson, Nick Marquez and Shawn Clepe. After several lineup changes N.W.S. is fi nally a solid force to be reckoned with in the Oregon underground metal scene.

N.W.S. has been interviewed on 101.5 KFLY’s “The Edge” radio show numerous times and also gets frequent air time on the show.

The current band members are: Boots (Vox), Shane Hepner (Rhythm Guitar), Brian Brown (Lead Guitar), Stephen Morse (Drums) and Matt Anderson (Bass).

Eugene’s Only Nightmares is a fi ve piece, heavy metal band, plain and simple — with ground-stomping riffs, thunderous drumming, classic NWOBHM melodies, slippery solos and vocals as versatile as their music.

Combine all these things and they are sure to devastate you live or recorded.

Only Nightmares plays heavy metal the way it should be played: raw, emotional, unhinged and aggressive with a sampling of all the things a human should think of when they hear the phrase, ‘heavy metal’. Stay tuned for their 7 track E.P. set to be out in the winter of 2010.

Tickets are $6 in advance, $8 at the door. The fi rst twenty people in the door get in for half price. Doors open at 6:30 pm and showtime is 7:00. ★

Eugene Celebration:Busker Fest and Rummage Sale

This year the annual Eugene Celebration will be held on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, August 27, 28 and 29. And this year the WOW Hall will be open to the public all three days as we combine two popular attractions: a Busker Fest (basically an open mic) and our much-beloved Rummage Sale!

For the big EC, the WOW Hall is planning on having entertainment inside the Main Hall, outside in the back parking lot, and possibly downstairs in the beer garden. Who is going to perform? (please note the question mark.) Well, maybe it’s YOU! That’s right, YOU!! If you would like to perform during the Eugene Celebration (and haven’t yet landed a gig on one of the big stages), please e-mail [email protected]. We’d like to have at least some of the acts scheduled beforehand. Solo artists and duets get to play inside, while bands will have the privilege of playing the parking lot where they can entertain the entire neighborhood!

Back by popular demand — it’s the WOW Hall Rummage Sale!

It’s now been two years since the last WOW Hall Rummage Sale, and at least some of our staff has been gathering stuff for that long in hope of getting the goods into the hands of people who can use them. We will have lots of CDs, tapes, videos, posters, photos and band t-shirts for sale, including some collector’s items. Plus we can promise a huge selection of the usual (and unusual) rummage sale items, including clothing, shoes, books, bedding, magazines, toys, electronics, household items and school, offi ce and pet supplies — all offered at incredibly low prices.

While supplies last, all children to attend get to pick a free toy or stuffed animal (one per).

This event is a fundraiser to support CCPA operations and donation of additional items is appreciated. The Community Center for the Performing Arts / WOW Hall is a nonprofi t (501c3) arts organization and donations are tax deductible. Donations may be dropped off at the WOW Hall during summer box offi ce hours (2:00 - 6:00 pm Monday through Friday). To arrange for a donation to be picked up, please call 541-687-2746 during offi ce hours or e-mail [email protected]. Unused donations (except those music related) will be passed along to another nonprofi t or community service organization at the end of the sale.

The WOW Hall doors will be open to the public from 2:00 to 7:00 pm on Friday, from 10:00 am - 6:00 pm on Saturday and from 10:00 am - 5:00 pm Sunday. Admission is FREE! Volunteers are needed all three days and for set-up on Thursday afternoon, August 26.

For more information please call the WOW Hall offi ce at 541-687-2746. ★

formed Cracker with bassist Davey Faragher. Krummenacher and Lisher intensifi ed their activities in Monks of Doom, a side project that had begun in 1986.

Cracker’s emergent sound had less in common with Camper’s exotic excursions and was more in synch with the Kinks and Southern roots music. They released their self-titled debut on Virgin, and following the #1 Modern Rock hit “Teen Angst (What The World Needs Now)”, the band became a minor commercial sensation (complete with then-signifi cant MTV exposure). The platinum-selling Kerosene Hat contained the enormous, era-defi ning hit single “Low”, as well as “Get Off This” and “Eurotrash Girl”. When the dust settled, Cracker found themselves with an ever-growing, devoted following both in the U.S. (where fans refer to themselves as Crumbs) and throughout Europe. Today the band stays well connected to yet another generation of fans via internet, many of whom were kids when these alt-rock godfathers were fi rst ruling rock radio.

In June of 1994, Cracker opened for The Grateful

Dead at Eugene’s Autzen Stadium. In 1999, Lowery, Segel, Krummenacher and Lisher

regrouped in the studio to assemble the experimental rarity set Camper Van Beethoven Is Dead — Long Live Camper Van Beethoven. The latter three also joined Cracker for a tour, featuring set lists fortifi ed with Camper Van Beethoven material.

In 2004, Camper Van Beethoven released New Roman Times, their fi rst studio album of original material in 15 years.

Camper Van Beethoven frequently tours with Cracker, and in 2005 the two groups started an annual three-night “Campout” in Pioneertown, California. The Campout has seen appearances by Built to Spill, Neko Case, Magnolia Electric Company and John Doe.

Camper Van Beethoven songs have been covered by Sublime, and Teenage Fanclub’s cover of Camper Van Beethoven’s 1985 staple “Take the Skinheads Bowling” was used as the title track for the 2002 Michael Moore fi lm Bowling for Columbine.

Tickets are $18 in advance, $20 at the door. Doors open at 8:00 pm and showtime is 9:00. ★

On Wednesday, August 4, the CCPA and KRVM proudly welcome the Surf Roots Tour featuring Anuhea, The Green, Stranger and Tamarama.

This summer will be Resin Music’s 5th Annual Surf Roots Tour — the #1 destination for summertime good vibes! The tour kicks off July 21 at the Roxy in Los Angeles and hits over 20 cities bringing together reggae, rock and surf music with environmental consciousness.

The artists are Anuhea from Maui, Hawaii, The Green from Oahu, HI, Stranger from San Diego, CA, and Tamarama from Tamarama Beach, Australia!

AnuheaRylee Anuheake’alaokalo-

kelani Jenkins (Anuhea) was born in December 1985 on the island of Maui. A self-taught guitarist and song writer, Anuhea began showcasing her talents while boarding at Kamehameha Schools in Honolulu.

“We would print out guitar chords to Bob Marley and Jack Johnson songs then skip water polo practice to go back to the dorms and jam them,” she recalls. “Once I got the basic idea of guitar, I started writing my own songs.”

Anuhea enjoyed the spotlight. She was the head anchor for the daily campus-wide news, hosted a variety of TV shows for local television stations, and acted in school musicals. Receiving numerous scholarships for her achievements in fi lm production, she attended fi lm school in Orange County, CA, but realized she wasn’t heading in the direction she was most passionate about, music. So she traded her formal education for a real-life one. Returning to the islands, she began performing at local coffee shops and restaurants.

Anuhea eventually put a band together and, until this point, has acted as her own manager, booking agent, music producer and distributor. Anuhea took recordings from a live taping for a public radio station and turned them into her fi rst real demo CD Rough Cuts. With a delicate

blend of fragility, strength and sass, Anuhea blends engaging lyrics with acoustic soul, pop and reggae into a style that has earned her a reputation as Hawaii’s newest rising star. Her signature guitar fl ow, sultry vocals and honest song writing make her a female version of multimillion selling Hawaii-based artist Jack Johnson.

On Anuhea’s debut album, which is simply titled Anuhea (her name translates to “a cool breeze of the heavenly rose”), each song tells a unique story, each story a lesson learned.

“My inspirations absolutely come from real life experiences,” declares Anuhea. “When you write a song you’re empowered because it’s like you’re giving validation to the feelings that you’re having. I tend to write most of my songs during the craziest parts of my life. I’ll write pages and pages of words and sentences in my notebook, then I go back with my guitar in my hands. That’s how most songs start for me.”

Fluent in Hawaiian, Anuhea is proud of her island roots and plans to honor her heritage by utilizing her growing acclaim for the betterment of the people of Hawaii. Music has been in Anuhea’s family for generations. Her father’s sister Nalani is part of the award winning Hawaiian music trio Na Leo Pilimehana. Her mother, an Oregon native, comes from a musical family as well.

“I just feel lucky that I’ve found my dream and am able to pursue it,” says Anuhea. “My main goal as a music-maker is to help people fi nd theirs, whatever it may be.”

The GreenThe Green is Caleb Keolanui,

JP Kennedy, Ikaika Antone and Zion Thompson. Caleb and JP were cofounders of the group Next Generation. Ikaika (The Next Generations’ keyboard player) had played with lead guitarist and vocalist Zion Thompson. Despite The Next Generations’ success, a follow up album was never recorded. So

Caleb, JP, Ikaika and Zion got together and formed The Green.

Currently with some of the biggest radio hits throughout Hawaii, The Green has had the privilege of working with numerous Hawaiian artists, and have also backed international reggae stars such as Pam Hall, Don Carlos, Pato Banton, Mikey Dread and Shinehead.

Stranger Based out of the South Bay of

San Diego, the sound of Stranger is a soulful blend of reggae roots, rock and jazz infused with conscious lyrics.

In 2002 Stranger began their fi rst offi cial recording experience with the recording techniques professor from Southwestern College. This turned out to be a three year process; the album was suitably titled Life Lessons. Directly after, Stranger wrote a whole new set of music and added trombone and sax to the group.

The 2007 release of Shelter From The Storm took the band to the next level, touring up and down the West Coast and across the pond to Hawaii. In 2009, Stranger released a 5 song EP and won the San Diego Music Award for ‘Best World Music’ group. The band is currently recording a new album.

TamaramaTamarama is Australia’s best

kept secret — a small pristine beach that is a perfect mix of serenity, danger, glamour and good times. Born by the beach and proud to be Australian, Tamarama’s Jay and Pottsy are spreading their infectious style of surf rock/pop to the masses.

Fresh from recording their debut LP in New York City with acclaimed producer David Kahne (Sublime, the Strokes, Sugar Ray) Tamarama are celebrating the release with a string of touring dates including Bonnaroo and Mountain Jam. Get a taste of the single “Lifetime on the Run” on their Facebook page.
