RETIRED PARISHIONERSWE NEED YOU! FRIENDS ACROSS TIME RETURNS FOR OUR 16TH YEAR! INFORMATION MEETING ON MONDAY, AUGUST 12The popular Friends Across Time program returns to St. Matthew School for our 16th year! Students from both Mrs. Hartge’s

and Mrs. Wnek’s fourth grade classrooms participate. This well-established intergenerational group enables our students and older parishioners to learn from, and better appreciate, each other’s experiences through planned monthly activities during the school year.Long-time participant Sue Lawhead said, “This program has enriched my life ten-fold! I receive more from the children than I would have ever imagined!”The sessions are held each month of the school year, September through May: Mrs. Hartge’s class on the first Tuesday and Mrs. Wnek’s class on the second Tuesday of each month from 9:30-10:30 a.m. in the parish’s St. Anthony Room. We are eagerly seeking at least seventy (70) retired parishioners to be buddies with the fourth grade students. Returning participants are encouraged to invite interested friends! In keeping with Diocesan and Parish guidelines for a safe environment, all participants must have attended the Protecting God’s Children training, and have a background check, including fingerprinting. Come to our informational meeting on Monday, August 12 in the St. Anthony Room after the 8:30 a.m. Mass. Refreshments will be served! Questions? Please contact Mrs. Judeen Hartge at 614-477-9678 or [email protected].

THE ST. MATTHEW BOOK CLUB – There will be no Book Club meeting in July. The next meeting will be Wednesday, August 28 at 6:30 p.m. in the Saint Gabriel Room. We will be discussing Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist by Brant Pitre. All are welcome.

LOOKING FOR A LITURGICAL MINISTRY? Mass sacristans are needed for the 5:00 p.m. Saturday and 12:00 p.m. Sunday Masses. Sacristans are scheduled approximately once a month. Responsibilities include preparation of the sacred vessels for Holy Mass and cleaning up afterwards. Training will be provided. To volunteer, please contact Vicki Wengert at [email protected].

GOLDEN MUSTANGS 55+ GROUP – Mark your calendar for our next gathering on Thursday, August 15, following the 8:30 a.m. Mass for The Feast of the Assumption. Please join us in the St. Anthony Room for brunch and learn about our past activities and upcoming plans and events. If you have any questions, please contact JoEllen Vickers at 614-475-5086 or [email protected] or Paul Rovnak at 614-205-9396 or [email protected].

USHERS NEEDED! St. Matthew is in need of more ushers for certain Masses. Our priests rely heavily on the ushers to make all parishioners and visitors feel welcome, to administer the collection and also pitch in when extra duties are necessary. It is time for our community to embrace the gifts we’ve been given and we can’t wait to see how God provides for these specific needs. Please contact Jenna Zins at [email protected] or 614-471-0212 for more information or to contribute.

PROTECTING GOD’S CHILDREN SAFE ENVIRONMENT SEMINAR – The Diocesan Safe Environment Compliance program requires that for an adult to interact with minors at the school/church, he/she must meet three requirements: attend a Protecting God’s Children class; have a background check performed and complete the code of conduct (attached to the volunteer application). The next Protecting God's Children class that St. Matthew will be hosting is Wednesday, September 18 from 6:00-9:00 p.m. in the St. Anthony Room. As a convenience, Fast Fingerprints (a third party) will be on site from 5:00-6:00 p.m. to do background checks before the class starts. The background checks will stop once the class starts so if you want to have your background check done that day, please plan to come early. The line can get pretty long. If you have already taken the PGC class and just need to have the fingerprinting done, please feel free to come to just the background check part. To register for the class, please visit https://www.stmatthew.net/protecting-gods-children.

SAVE THE DATE FOR THE 2019 ST. MATTHEW CHARITABLE WORKS GOLF SCRAMBLE – Mark your calendar and plan to attend the golf scramble that is sponsored by the St. Jude Council 5801, our local St. Matthew Knights of Columbus Council and Norbert Pschibul with The Watch Shop Jewelers (304 S. Hamilton Road). This event will be a 1:00 p.m. shotgun start on Sunday, August 25 at Kyber Run Golf Course (5261 Mink Street, Johnstown). All proceeds go directly to the St. Matthew Charitable Works Ministry to assist those in need in our community. We are looking for four-person teams, hole sponsors or prize donations. This is a great opportunity to have some fun while helping those in need. Please contact Paul Koors at [email protected] or 614-209-7055 for sign-up information.

SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JULY 21, 2019

JOIN US THIS FALLFor a new study from Ascension Press! Early registration is now available as materials will be in high demand for this study.

ROMANS: THE GOSPEL OF SALVATION

Tuesday mornings • September 17–November 5 • 10:00-11:30 a.m. • St. Raphael Room

Tuesday evenings • September 17-November 5 • 7:00-8:30 p.m. • St. Raphael Room

Paul’s letter to the Romans has been at the center of reflection, conversion, and controversy from the very beginning. Romans: The Gospel of Salvation provides an authentically Catholic, comprehensive, and simple way to understand the overarching theme of Romans – salvation.Romans: The Gospel of Salvation explores the ways in which Jesus is the fulfillment of Israel’s prophecies, which leads to the universal, “Catholic” family of God.In this 8-session program, theology professor Dr. Andrew Swafford and Jeff Cavins examine Paul’s letter to the Romans. Dr. Swafford and Cavins provide historical context and highlight the connections to Jesus and Christianity Paul makes with the Old Testament.

In Romans: The Gospel of Salvation, Catholics will learn...• The Catholic teaching on salvation• How to explain salvation to non-Christians• What is required for salvation – faith or works• What Paul really means by “works” not leading to

salvation• How Christ’s death changed our relationship with God• The meaning of the difficult passages in Romans• How we can enter more deeply into Christ

Dr. Swafford and Cavins explain that salvation is not merely the removal of a guilty verdict. Salvation is about entering into Christ’s life and death and sharing in His eternal sonship.

Help us in our mission to answer God’s call to love and serve our neighbor by providing clothing, furniture and household goods to those in need. Come help behind the scenes sorting adult and children’s clothing that will go out to our clients. Or you can work up front in our check in/check out areas on Tuesday/Thursday from 6:00-8:00 p.m. or on Wednesdays/Saturdays from 9:00 a.m.-noon. We sign up new clients with a single form and we count items the clients have chosen. No money is involved! New volunteers work with a partner. There is no paycheck but the benefits are awesome! We are located at 240 Outerbelt Street, Columbus, 43213 (½ mile east of Mt. Carmel Hospital). Please contact [email protected] or call 614-863-1371 and select volunteer.

PARISH PROJECTSAs good stewards of your generosity, the Facilities Team is pleased to provide you regular updates on St. Matthew campus projects, improvements, ongoing initiatives and enhancements.Hopefully, you had an opportunity to enjoy the Parish Festival and experience some of the improvements we have made to our St. Matthew campus. Summer break has crossed the halfway point and there is still much to accomplish before Fall.In the Church undercroft, we are putting the finishing touches on the St. Anthony Room. Over the last few months, we have installed a new DVD player, added surround sound, installed a motorized screen, and added a coffee maker and beverage carafes. The final step is a fresh coat of paint. If you have a steady hand and a couple of hours to give, we could use some help to complete this project. The Hutta kitchen renovations remain on track. The exhaust hoods are operational. The walk-in cooler and inside kitchen walls are done. The suspended ceiling, lighting and floors will be completed over the next week. The new kitchen HVAC system will be placed on the roof on Tuesday. By the end of the month, the kitchen equipment and sinks will start to be placed. It is very exciting to see things coming back together. We appreciate this opportunity to provide these updates and welcome suggestions for facility enhancements. Please contact George Harvey at [email protected].
