COMPASSION AT ST. JOHN’SCOMPASSION IN OUR ST. JOHN’S COMMUNITYOne of the things we often hear from members of our church is how much they love and appreciate the feeling of “Community” we have at St. John’s. To ensure we support that feeling, we will continue to do the small things that tell our members we care. If you know of someone or are someone who is experiencing a joy or a difficult time, we want to know about it so we can show our love. We never need to know the details, but we are happy to add someone to our prayer list, send a card, bring communion at home, or provide a meal or two. Here’s how you can let us know:• E-mail a prayer request to the church office; [email protected]• Contact Cindy Mayhew ([email protected]) to add a name to the prayer list• Contact Gail Wien ([email protected]) to have a card sent• Contact Kyle Hern (816.820.5518 or [email protected]) for pastoral care calls.

OPENING PRAYER (in unison)| Allie CobbO Lord, your wondrous birth means nothing to us unless we are born again, your sac-rificial death means nothing to us unless we die to sin, your triumphant resurrection means nothing to us unless we are risen with you. O Savior, raise and exalt us, now, to the estate of grace and hereafter to the state of glory; where with God the Father and the Holy Spirit, you live and reign, One God forever and ever. Amen.

PASTORAL PRAYER
THE LORD’S PRAYEROur Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
SOLO | To God Be the Glory | music by Robert Lowry, arr. Mark Hayes, 2011Joshua Markley, baritone
“To God Be the Glory” was written in 1875 by Fanny Crosby, the prodigious American poet and educator, and it remains one of the most popular of her more than 8,000 hymns. This text is different from Crosby’s other hymns (and most gospel hymns) because, rather than focus on our very personal experience of God, the words are wholly about God and His perfect glory. Crosby’s words and Robert Lowry’s tune are set by Kansas City’s own Mark Hayes.
To God be the glory, great things He has done;So loved He the world that He gave us His Son,
Who yielded His life an atonement for sin,And opened the life gate that all may go in.
Refrain: Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, Let the earth hear His voice!Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, Let the people rejoice!
O come to the Father, through Jesus the Son,
And give Him the glory, great things He has done.O perfect redemption, the purchase of blood,
To every believer the promise of God;The vilest offender who truly believes,
That moment from Jesus a pardon receives.Great things He hath taught us, great things He hath done,
And great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son;But purer, and higher, and greater will be
Our wonder, our victory, when Jesus we see. REFRAIN(Fanny J. Crosby, 1875)

SCRIPTURE | Luke 24:13-35 | CEB
On that same day, two disciples were traveling to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem. They were talking to each other about everything that had happened. While they were discussing these things, Jesus himself arrived and joined them on their journey. They were prevented from recognizing him.
He said to them, “What are you talking about as you walk along?” They stopped, their faces downcast.
The one named Cleopas replied, “Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who is unaware of the things that have taken place there over the last few days?”
He said to them, “What things?”
They said to him, “The things about Jesus of Nazareth. Because of his powerful deeds and words, he was recognized by God and all the people as a prophet. But our chief priests and our leaders handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him. We had hoped he was the one who would redeem Israel. All these things happened three days ago. But there’s more: Some women from our group have left us stunned. They went to the tomb early this morning and didn’t find his body. They came to us saying that they had even seen a vision of angels who told them he is alive. Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found things just as the women said. They didn’t see him.”
Then Jesus said to them, “You foolish people! Your dull minds keep you from believing all that the prophets talked about. Wasn’t it necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and then enter into his glory?” Then he interpreted for them the things written about himself in all the scriptures, starting with Moses and going through all the Prophets.
When they came to Emmaus, he acted as if he was going on ahead. But they urged him, saying, “Stay with us. It’s nearly evening, and the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them. After he took his seat at the table with them, he took the bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. Their eyes were opened and they recognized him, but he disappeared from their sight. They said to each other, “Weren’t our hearts on fire when he spoke to us along the road and when he explained the scriptures for us?”
They got up right then and returned to Jerusalem. They found the eleven and their companions gathered together. They were saying to each other, “The Lord really has risen! He appeared to Simon!” Then the two disciples described what had happened along the road and how Jesus was made known to them as he broke the bread.

GENEROSITY MOMENT
ANTHEM | Adoration | music by Bach-Gounod/Fettke, 2009Chamber Choir
The Beatles’ “Long and Winding Road” may have referred to the path of creating “Adoration.” Tom Fettke wrote the work for mixed choir in 2009, adapting a 1677 text from Silesia (now Poland) and using an 1853 melody by the French Romantic composer Charles Gounod especially designed to be superimposed over a much-loved keyboard solo of J.S. Bach, written 137 years earlier in 1716. Got it? If not, no worries – simply pray the familiar “Fairest Lord Jesus” text as the choir sings this reverent piece.
Fairest Lord Jesus, Ruler of all nature!Son of God and Son of Man!
Light of my soul’s glory, joy and crown.Fair the morning sunshine, fair the evening moonlight,Bright and beautiful are all the sparkling stars in space.
Jesus is brighter, Jesus is purer,Jesus shines in radiant beauty, shines in boundless love and grace.
Lord of all creation, we offer praise and adoration,Now and forever. Amen.
(Joseph A. Seiss, 1677: adapted by Tom Fettke, 2009)

OUTREACH OPPORTUNITIES
HARVESTERSThank you for your generosity providing fresh produce for Harvesters during Lent. With the arrival of COVID-19 the need has now shifted. Harvesters anticipates at least a 65% increase in food insecure people in our area with all the closures and layoffs. At the same time there are declines in food donations with the stay-at-home order and the tightened supply chain. This necessitates Harvesters to purchase food, increasing costs by 400% to cover the increased need. If you are able please consider donating at https://www.harvesters.org/. If you are interested in volunteering visit https://www.harvesters.org/GiveTime . Helping feed people is an essential activity. There are new guidelines on this landing page ( including only volunteers 18 and older).
Thank you for your continued care for those in need in our community.
COOPER’S KEEPERSSt. John’s has “Cooper’s Keepers” bracelets to distribute in support of the Cobb Family. Our current situation makes that difficult, however here’s the plan until we are together again. You can drive by the back of the church during the times that we are collecting for N2N/Harvesters and get the bracelets for your family at that time. Many of you have already made donations but any additional collected will also be given to the Cobbs. Our goal is for all members to have them as a visible sign of support and a daily reminder to pray for Cooper’s healing.

UP NEXT . . .
The Christian community spends a lot of time and effort on the season of Lent, Holy Week, and Easter Sunday. We host special services for Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, and Good Friday. We invite people to give up something for Lent, or maybe to start a new spiritual discipline during this time. We plan for and execute Easter Egg hunts for neighborhood families and our kids. We get together for Easter brunch with our church friends and our family. And then on the Monday after Easter Sunday, it is back to life as usual. But life is not normal, we are not living it as we usually do. Life is literally different for us and it could be spiritually different as well. The Gospels remind us that there is more to the story of Jesus than just his resurrection. The encounters with the resurrected Jesus launched something new. You are invited to join us for our new series, But There’s More! We believe it will be a time to help us make sense of where we are and were God is sending us. You are invited to join us each Sunday morning at 10:45 am through our website, live-stream, or Facebook Live for worship.
