Daniel Kish has no eyes, but can ridehis bike down the street and walkthrough an unfamiliar airport on hisown. He travels the world teachingother blind people the bat-likenavigational technique that gives himso much freedom and allows him toperceive trees, bushes, cars or thefurniture in a hotel room.

He makes short, sharp clicking soundswith his tongue and mouth, and isable to translate the slight echoes that

are returned into a spatialrepresentation of a curb, a fenceor a sofa a technique calledecholocation that he taught tohimself.

As a baby, he lost both eyes tocancer. At two, he started clickinghis way around. Friends and familycalled it his radar. He excelled atschool, earned two mastersdegrees and, a decade ago, started a non-profit group, World

    Conquered The Darkness

    With Echolocation.

Access for the Blind. It is based inSouthern California and has a nolimits philosophy that challengesconventional wisdom about thecapabilities of blind people.

Now, the 45-year-old iscollaborating with neuroscientists atthe University of Western Ontario tolearn more about how humanecholocation works and how Mr. Kishcan perceive the world from reflectedsound waves.

A combination of a sensor-infusedwristband and a smartphone app willprovide nudges for healthier living, based on your behavior.

Just an hour ago on stage at TEDGlobal, Jawbone announced thegrand project they've been quietlyworking on for years: A wearable bandcalled Up, which is infused withsensors and smartphone connected, allowing you to track your eating, sleeping, and activity patterns.

"The CDC says that for the first time inhistory, lifestyle diseases such asdiabetes are killing more people thancommunicable diseases," TravisBogard, Jawbone's VP of productmanagement, tells Co.Design.

"We're trying to solve that problem."The Up's sensors collect data abouthow much you've been sleeping andhow much you've been moving. Thatdata is then fed into a smartphoneapp, which also takes in informationabout your meals. (You enter meal datamanually, in part by taking pictures of what you've eaten.)

Based on all that information, thesmartphone program provides "nudges"meant to help you live healthier, day by

day. For example, if you haven't sleptmuch, when you wake up the appmight suggest a high-protein breakfastand an extra glass of water.

blackwell explains:ostensibly useless, plastic bags are thesecond most common form of litter in theworld after cigarette butts. I began collect-ing semi-degraded plastic bags fromkitchen cupboards and city streets about sixyears ago. the bags are sewn shut withyarn, deliberately thwarting their function.the protean shapes suggest faces, animals,

or clothing. their textured, worn, or meltedsurfaces wear the remains of physicalactivity like dirty laundry left on the floor. thebags attempt to redress their impoverishedstatus with the addition of colorful embroi-dery in geometric patterns.

    made of fish scales

An RCA grad fashions everyday itemsfrom a material that's commonly discarded, but used throughout the

    world in diverse applications.

That plastic take-out container from todays lunch, the disposablepens at your desk, and the bottlefrom the water you bought theother day will be around for hundreds, perhaps thousands, of years. Despite the promise of bioplastics (derived from suchunlikely sources as corn, algae, castor beans, and chicken feath-ers), we have yet to hit upon acheap, durable, and versatilealternative petroleum-basedplastic. The latest bid to save theplanet from plastic overloadcomes from a recent RoyalCollege of Art grad, who hasinvented a new material out of fishscales. Fish. Scales.

De Laurens likens the durability of the fish-scale plastic to bone or horn, even without the use of binding agents. Althoughbiodegradable and compostable,it can last forever if properlylooked after. And since it isheatproof and fire-retardant, deLaurens imagines it could besuitable in building applications. For the moment, hes looking for funding to investigate methods for bringing downproduction costs.

These beautiful pieces by Sivan Royz , a student studyingtextiles at the Shenkar College of Engineering and Design in Tel Aviv, take shape and inspiration from theworld of blooming nature. Buildingupon the geometries of nature, sherelies on silk as the base fabricwhich is layered continuously toshape each piece. Whether it is abracelet, necklace or purse, eachpiece reacts gracefully to movementjust like a living organism.

The structure of the pieces is created through an extensivelayering of laser cut silk pieces anda string keeping them attached. Each piece is evenly colored with aslight shade of dark tones createdby the laser cut reacting and slightlyburning the silk. The simplicity andextensive layering create a subtleand natural texture reminiscing of multicellular forms. from her accessories, the purse reallycaptivates our attention as it opensto reveal an iPhone and lipstick.

Sivan Royz mentions thatthe purse really holds everythingyou need on the red carpet andalthough we think you might needone or two more things (keys andvalet ticket), we believe the piecesare well conceived and elegant toaccompany any special event. Her collection consists of true conver-sation pieces that will evolve withmore experimentation. We hope tosee more from Sivan and thesemagnificent pieces that blur thelines between art and design.

Israeli design student dror peleghas designed 'frii' for for hisdegree at bezalel academy of art and design, jerusalem.

This alternative material dictates anew aesthetic as well: 'frii' featuressmaller wheels, 20 inches in size, which calls for a shorter fork andadds strength. additional strength iscreated by plastic ribs, which areused throughout the design. theframe also includes a pyramid-shaped bottom by the crank for stability.

To construct 'frii', bearings areinserted into the mold beforeinjecting, and tires are 'full'material, injected over the rims, making them 'flat tire'-proof. thesaddle is injected in differentsizes to accommodate variousheights of riders.

Toy SculpturesRobert Bradford creates hislife-size and larger-than-life sculp-tures of humans and animals fromdiscarded plastic items, mainly toysbut also other colorful plastic bitsand pieces, such as combs andbuttons, brushes and parts of clothes pegs.

In 2002, he started to consider thepossibilities that his childrensforgotten toys could have as part of something bigger. Bradford says helikes the idea that the plastic pieceshave a history, some unknown past, and that they also pass on a cul-tural history as each of the piecesrepresents a point in time. Recyclingis not his primary concern, but eachsculpture certainly keeps quite a fewpieces from becoming landfill.

    GAMEFOR KEEPINGA CITY CLEAN

In case you ever wondered how the residentsin your city could become more responsiblewhen it comes to littering. A fun and innovativeawareness campaign was implemented for thethe city of Lucerne in Switzerland.

The action Lucerne shines was launchedalready in 1999. At that time, within three years, two thirds of urban waste was replaced by larger models and intensified cleaning. This was asuccess but there was still a littering problem-i.e. careless dumping of waste in public places. The city of Lucerne spends 4.5 million francsannually to clean public spaces.

This campaign was created to sensitize thegeneral population about this problem. A total of 16 bins in the city of Lucerne were converted togame stations. The campaign slogan is: Lucerneshines, very easily. We are really curious if thiscampaign will give any significant results. All inall, we find it creative and worthy of being imple-mented in various cities across the world. Whatdo you think of it?

    old clothingglued together

Far too many people toss their outdatedclothes or, worse, send them to Salvation Armyassuming, wrongly, that someone else wants tosnatch up a pair of 1987 Z. Cavariccis. TobiasJuretzek aint one of them. He takes his oldshirts, jeans, and other garments and turnsthem into something actually useful: furniture.

Jabbing zippers aside, you'd be forgiven for doubting whether worn-out clothes can make for decent furniture. After all, they've got to support apersons entire body weight. Juretzek assures usthat the chairs are plenty sturdy. Each is composedof some 13 pounds of clothing - taken fromfriends, a used-clothing company, or Juretzeksown closet that the designer soaks in resin, thencompresses in a mold.

Juretzek, a German designer, throwstogether disused clothes to create stylish littlechairs that could almost pass for somethingyoud find around the dining-room table, if not for the occasional exposed zipper.

    And theyre actually sturdy!

How about a tourist in asmall town walking very slowly? These people these people in the cross-

    walk, they could be you:

You people drive me insane, withyour slow walking and your takingup the sidewalks and your

labored, unpredictable weavingand bobbing. And thats just thelot of you that arent drunk.

You do this, and the walk to thestore that usually takes me 3minutes ends up taking me 15.Just to walk three blocks.

Oh, I hear you. You say thingslike, Hey, stop right here. Take apicture of me in front of thisstaircase. And you stop JUST asIm sliding up behind you to pass.So instead of making a cleansweep around the outside of your hilarious Pikes Peak: GettingThis High Would Be Illegal In

Most States t-shirts, and I touchyour boob.

And you think its funny. Lady, Ivetouched three boobs just thisweek. It aint funny.

You stand in the middle of thesidewalk right smack dab inthe middle and you talk toeach other. And then, when I goto pass on the inside, you pokeup your arm to point at some-thing, and you jab your finger inmy nose.

You let your kids run willy-nillyall over the sidewalk, as theyscream and throw pieces of funnel cake at each other. Thatfunnel cake doesnt just magi-cally disappear, people. It has togo somewhere. And that some-where is usually the bottom of my shoe .

I get so frustrated. And its allbecause I NEED TO GET TO THESTORE TO BUY CASHEWSBECAUSE IM REALLY CRAVINGTHEM.

I need to get there. NOW. Fast.Im in a hurry and you guys areSO slow. So slow and so stoppyand oblivious to the other peoplearound you.You make me saythings like, This town is soannoying. Why do I live here?

Until one day, when the cloudsare roiling after a mid-summer storm and Im in my usual hurryto get back home with a handfulof fruit and a camera thats aboutto get wet. My head is down andIm watching your feet.

Im watching them, becausesooner or later, theyre going tostop. And sooner or later, they do.

And one of you points and says,Oh my gosh, Dad. Look at thesky! Look at the trees! Look at themountains! This must be the mostbeautiful place in the world. Imgoing to live here when I growup. Its going to be killer. Every-one here is so happy. You mademe look. And you were right.

Everyone here IS so happy. Whenthey slow down. When they takethe time to look at their town as if they were tourists falling in lovewith it for the first time.

So thank you for slowing medown. My pretend need to get toand from the store in a hurry isntas important as the joy yourefeeling.

Keep walking slowly. Keep takingyour pictures. Keep pointing atthings and exclaiming, so I canlook at it with new eyes, too.Just please keep your finger out of my nose.
