2. Nationwide Celebrations of Computer Science Education Week by Globalorians

Globaloria students and educators nationwide joined 5 million students across 33,000 classrooms in 167 countries in participating in the Hour of Code, an initiative for Computer Science Education Week (CSEdWeek), an annual program dedicated to inspiring K-12 students to take interest in computer science. In her Huffington Post blog, Idit explores the history of this movement and the critical mission of CSEdWeek. Every day is an-hour-of-code in our Globaloria community. Here are selected featured activities by our community members nationwide during CSEdWeek, December 9-13, 2013.

In Randolph Technical Center, Elkins, West Virginia, Lead Educator Denise Stalnaker reported:“My students blogged about their coding accomplishments and engagement in Globaloria. For example, David R., an 11th Grader wrote:

“I have had a wonderful time in this game design class because it shows me how to work with code. I have learned a lot about coding and it has been challenging in some cases because I have learned that the slightest mistake or a misplaced piece of code can cause the whole thing to not work. In taking this class, I have coded quite a bit to learn how it all works. I have spent hours upon hours just coding games. I originally took this class for that very reason of learning more about code because I would like to major in computer science. I know that I have much to learn and I am looking forward to learning it.”

In Tygarts Valley Middle School, Mill Creek, West Virginia, Lead Educator Melissa Walters reported: “56 students blogged about their computer science learning and documented it with pictures on Flickr.

At the Young Women’s Leadership School of Astoria, Queens, New York, Lead Educator Andrea Chaves posted: “The entire school, 580 students, participated in the Hour of Code by watching coding tutorial videos online. My Globaloria class continues to design and code their educational games.”

At The Tech Museum of Innovation, California, Lead Facilitators Shubha Tuljapurkar and Adam DeLaRosa reported: “Globaloria featured as a hands-on computer science experience for 52,000 youth over three days as part of The Tech’s celebration of CSEdWeek! See our photos on Flickr.”

5. Game-Making for Learning Workshop for Education Leaders at Scholastic HQ

The World Wide Workshop VP of Programs and Production, Shannon Sullivan, brought best practices from Globaloria Leadership Training to a broader audience in November. Shannon spoke to Education Leaders (Some even traveling from Shanghai, China!) at Scholastic Headquarters in NYC about how they can integrate video game design and coding into core curriculum. Sharing results-proven strategies for using student enjoyment of playing and making video games to engage them in learning core content, the session was a joint initiative with Workshop partner, Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, which has embraced video game design as an important discipline for their awards program, much like painting, sculpture and poetry writing.
