ready for Globey Awards Ceremonies in New York City and West Virginia. SIIA recognized
Globaloria as an EdTech Innovator in San Francisco; our Professional Development model

San Jose/Silicon Valley, May 17, 2013: Silicon Valley youth and educators joined community and
business leaders for the 2nd
Annual Globeys in San Jose, an awards ceremony recognizing student
achievement in educational video game design and coding using Globaloria.Finalistsin the Individual
Hidden Object Game and Team Game competitions presented their games to the audience, and winners
were awarded game-design toolkits that included prizes such as a laptop computer, a subscription to
Adobe Creative Cloud, a Cisco Flip Camera, a BrainPOP subscription, Microsoft games and entry into
the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Educators and school leaders were also recognized with the ESAF-sponsored2013 Leadership Inspiration Awards for commitment to self-learning and education

Mountain View, California, May 17, 2013: In conjunctionwith the Globeys, Microsoft Silicon Valley
launched a microdocumentary,Globaloria: Increasing Opportunity in Silicon Valley, about the impact of
STEM learning through Globaloria among San Jose/Silicon Valley youth. The short film debuted at the
San Jose Globey Awards Ceremony. Next month, Microsoft will host the Globaloria San Jose/Silicon
Valley Educator Academy at their Mountain View campus.
Globaloria: Increasing Opportunity in Silicon Valley
East Austin, Texas, May 29, 2013: Fifty students fromEast Austin College Prep(EAPrep) wererecognized for achievement in Globaloria at the 4
thAnnual Globeys at EAPrep. Families, educators,
and local leaders gathered for the event held at EAPrep, during which prizes were awarded for
excellence in blogging, artwork, Hidden Object Game design and Team Game design. A panel of expert
judges that included Anne Fertitta, Senior Manager of Global Community Affairs at AMD, and Gerardo
Interiano, Central Region Public Affairs Manager at Google, partnered with the Workshop in the selection

Students Advancing in Technology
Charleston WV, April 20, 2013:George Washington High Schoolgot Globey-ready by holding a
Hackathon' last month. Globaloria students at this Charleston, WV high school spent a Saturday in
school to prepare their games for the Globeys. Educator Karen Kail opened the Globaloria game design
lab to give students the opportunity to devote extra hours to the coding and design of their Globey
submissions. We wish these hard workers luck in the competition!
Students put finishing touches on their games during the George Washington High School Hackathon.
Astoria, NY, May 14, 2013: Staff from the Workshop Help Desk visitedThe Young Women's Leadership
School of Astoriafor a mini-'Hackathon' that helped Globaloria students advance their games for the first

NCWIT Summit. Their presentation, Empowering Latinas in Computing, imparted facts about the digital
divide Americas young Latinos and Latinas face, as well as best practices to resolve issues of access

3. TechEdge Magazine Profiles Globalorias Professional
Development System
TechEdge Magazine, a publication of theTexas Computer
Education Association, featured the Globaloria Professional
Development System in the May 2013 issue. The article,Proven Professional Development Tips from
Globaloria, highlights the Globaloria approach to teacher training, in a blended learning environment, as
an effective model that could be replicated in other schools around the state. We hope it will inspire many
more Texas schools to join the Network in 2013-14.
4. Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA) Selects Globaloria as
Innovation Pioneer
At its annualEd Tech Industry Summitin San Francisco, theSoftware and Information
Industry Association(SIIA) featured Globaloria in theInnovation Incubator program, which supports
innovation in the ed-tech industry by raising the profile of promising new technologies. The 2013
Innovations were selected based on a broad range of criteria, including the education focus, end-user
impact, market need, representation of K-12/post-secondary market levels, and the level of originality and
innovation.
5. Scholastic Art & Writing Awards Names Globaloria Students National Medalists
Tygarts Valley High Schoolseniors Matthew and Brittany received National Silver Medals in the 2013
Scholastic Art & Writing Awards in the Video Game Design category. Their winning game,Carl and
Carly's Big Day, created in Globaloria, will be featured in national galleries and events. On May 31,
Matthew and teacher Diane White attended the90th Anniversary National Awards Ceremonyat Carnegie
Hall in NYC. The event featured keynote speaker Sarah Jessica Parker; special guests Zac Posen,
Terrence Hayes and Usher; and a video message from Michelle Obama. Seventeen additional Globaloria

World Wide Workshop will hold a Globaloria Video Game Workshop in North Miami, Florida, to
demonstrate the education benefits Globaloria can provide your school district. To attend or request more

6. Welcoming Lisette Titre to Silicon Valley Advisory Board
Lisette Titre, a digital artist and modeler, joined the Globaloria Silicon Valley Board of Advisors. With her
roster of artistic skills, Lisette has managed teams of artists in China, Australia, Canada, and India, and
has contributed to games by EA and Harmonix. Currently Lisette teaches game development at Youth
UpRising, a transformative community center in East Oakland, and she has been creating STEM-focused
game-development curricula designed to expose underserved youth to careers in technology. This
month, Lisette visited Leonard Herman Intermediate School in San Jose and spoke to Globaloria
students about how STEM is used to create their favorite games. Lisette reflected, "I was impressed with
the students technical questions. They wanted to know how a certain characters assets were created. I
explained to them how we use geometry to draw and manipulate the digital clay or wireframes that make
up the character models. I also explained how we use physics simulations to drive the mathematics for
explosions, fire, gravity, etc. It was great to have them understand how STEM drives the tech that makesthe games they love to play.
