On June 28, 1914, an assassin shot killed the archduke.

Then Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia.

But Russia was an ally with Serbia so they sent troops to help them fight Austria-Hungary.

But since Austria-Hungary was part of the German alliance, Germany declared war on Russia.

But since Russia was part of the British alliance, Britain and France then declared war on

Germany and Austria- Hungary

Soldiers on Germanys and Austria-Hungary’s side were called Central powers.

Soldiers on Russia’s, France’s, or Britain's side were called the Allied Powers or Allies.

Air and chemical warfare were new to the war they were made by new technology that made it

possible to make deadlier weapons.

In 1914 President Wilson declared that the united States would not take sides

in the fighting.

The war in Europe created a business boom in the United States.

In 1915 Germany tried to cut off Allied trade by using a U-boat or submarine.

Congress passed the Selective Service Act in May 1917

In 1917 President Wilson created the War Industries Board.

In 1917 Congress passed the Espionage Act

In 1918 Congress passed the Sedition Act

In March 1918, the Germans began a new series of attacks across Europe.

In early 1918 President Wilson made a plan called the Fourteen Points.

But President Wilson became ill while fighting for the League of Nations and in 1920 the Senate made its final rejection and the U.S. didn’t become a

member of the League of Nations.
