    One Man, Many Visions Dr. Vishwanath D. Karad is the Founder of MAEER’s MIT Group of Institutions, Pune. He is a great vi s i on ar y edu cat i on i s t , w h o revolut ionized the professional education scenar io in the country in the 80s by pursuing the cause of unaided institutes of education. He is also the pioneer of ‘Value-based Universal Education System’ for the hol i s t i c devel opm en t of t he students.

    Governing Council (proposed)Pandit Jasraj is one of the most revered and respected classical vocal ar tistes of India belonging to the Mewati gharana. Even at 83, Pandit Jasraj has the abil ity to per form difficult compositions with great ease. He is the recipient of many awards and honours, one of them being the Padma Vibhushan from the Government of India.

    He is regarded as one of the topmost players of the Hindustani Bansur i (flute) in the wor ld. He is instrumental in br inging great popular ity to flute as a solo instrument in classical recitals not just in India, but also at an international level. He is also an acclaimed music director in Hindi films and has released music albums that have enthral led the l isteners throughout the wor ld.

    Ustad Zakir Hussein, one of the finest exponents of tabla, who studied under the tutelage of his guru and father , legendary table maestro late Ustad Allah Rakha. He also earned great recognition internationally as a musician who has successful ly created a fusion of Indian and western music. He is the recipient of the Padma Bhushan and Sangeet Natak Academy award amongst many other honours.

    One of the greatest santoor maestros in the wor ld, Pandit Shivkumar Sharma has been instrumental in popular izing santoor , a folk instrument of Kashmir , as a classical instrument in the wor ld. He is also an acclaimed music director and composer. He is the recipient of the Padma Vibhushan amongst many other wor ld-wide recognitions.

    Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, is a true maestro and exponent of Sarod. He is the sixth generation sarod player in the Bangash family. He has been instrumental in br inging international recognition to sarod and it is a great treat to hear Ustad Amjad Ali Khan play this difficult instrument with great ease. He is also the recipient of Padma Vibhushan.

    Dr. L. Subramaniam is an acclaimed Indian viol inist, composer and conductor , trained in the classical Carnatic music tradition and Western classical music, renowned for his vir tuoso playing techniques and compositions in orchestral fusion. He has won great laurels in India and the wor ld over as a viol in maestro. He has also col laborated with viol in greats l ike Yehudi Menuhin and Stephane Grappell i.

    Pandit Hr idaynath Mangeshkar is one of the finest music composers and singers of India. Son of the great singer-actor of yesteryears Master Deenanath and younger brother of legendary singers Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhonsale he has created some truly unforgettable melodies that have enthral led the music afficionados throughout the country.

    Hariharan is a National Award-winning singer known for his silky smooth voice and a tremendous understanding of melody. He is a prol ific singer, having sung in multiple Indian languages as well as in English. He has sung for many Indian films and is the co-Founder of the band 'Colonial Cousins', which has released many popular albums.

    Pandita Shama Bhate is one of the most recognized Kathak exponents in the country. Apart from being an extremely talented and expressive danseuse, she is one of the finest teachers having taught and trained hundreds of students who have earned national and international repute through the years.

    For ages, music has been an integral par t of our l ives. The or igin of music can only be guessed, but its significance in our daily

    l ives today cannot be disputed. Since long, man has given an expression to his feel ings through music. Be it happiness or

    melancholy, elation or somberness, music has sometimes conveyed the feel ings better than words.

    At Vishwashanti Sangeet Kala Academy, it is our endeavor to trace the or igins of music through the ages, learn about the

    different forms of music, explore the var iety of musical instruments, pay tr ibute to the maestros of music down the years and

    propagate the r ich and var ied traditions of Indian classical music based on time- tested Indian values and cultures

  • VSKA’s courses have been designed with inputs from acclaimed musicologists and per forming ar tists. Our

    syl labus aims to create seekers or g mYH of music, rather than ñnY©H or mere competitors.Through practical,

    per formance-based pedagogy, the VSKA syl labus charts a course of continuously increasing creative,

    imaginative and profoundmusical abil ity in each of its students. The VSKA curr iculum recognises that each

    student is a unique ar tist and str ives to promote aesthetic diversity amongst its students - a feature inherent

    to the genre of Hindustani Classical Music.

    The Syllabus

    VSKA is a very unique academy not just in its course content but also in its design. As a tr ibute to the Seven

    Musical Notes, VSKA consists of seven domed musical hal ls arranged in a circular pattern. Each domed

    chamber represents a musical note: Sa or Shadja, Re or Rikhabh, Ga or Gandhar, Ma or Madhyam, Pa or

    Pancham, Dha or Dhaivat and Ni or Nishad. The confluence of these seven notes is the ‘Anahat Naad’ or ‘Naad

    Brahma’, which is represented by the central domed musical hal l .

    Each of the seven per ipheral domes wil l serve as a museum for musical instruments col lected not just from

    all over India, but from over 160 countr ies of the wor ld as well . They wil l also serve as an extensive reference

    l ibrary housing the finest books and audio-video collection of concerts and per formances, along with some

    select musical memorabil ia and photos of great musical maestros.

    The central hal l of Naad Brahma has the divine tr inity of Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh - Creator , Preserver and

    Destroyer respectively, with 'AUM', the first sound that emanated in the universe after the Big Bang!

    VSKA is situated in the Rajbaug Educational Complex of MAEER’s MIT Group of Institutions, Pune. The

    legendary film maker and actor of Indian Cinema, Late Raj Kapoor owned a large piece of land on the bank of

    the r iver Mula-Mutha at vil lage Loni-Kalbhor on the Solapur highway near Pune. It was his wish that this land

    be used for academic and educational purposes after his passing away. Accordingly, in 2003, MAEER obtained

    this land from the inher itors of Raj Kapoor and the Rajbaug Educational Complex of MAEER's MIT star ted

    taking shape.

    1) Vishwashanti Sangeet Sanskriti DarshanA 2-year introductory course which wil l introduce students to fundamental concepts of music, such as

    tunefulness, rhythmicness and the joy inherent in compositional structure. This course wil l introduce

    students to the wor ld of music and music-making through a lot of emphasis on guided l istening and music

    appreciation. By the end of the course, the students wil l be able to per form select pieces of classical music

    tuneful ly and rhythmically. They wil l be introduced to improvisation and to the abil ity to create their own

    musical designs. They wil l also be able to l isten to classical music knowledgeably and identify key points of

    musical importance and beauty in the music of var ious Gharanas and styles.

    3) Vishwashanti Sangeet AlankarThis is a 2 year high- level course which wil l prepare the student to begin functioning in the outside wor ld as a trained, skil led, knowledgable per former of Hindustani classical music. The course wil l build upon the Sangeet Visharad course and wil l teach the students compositions, ragas, talas and vocal/ improvisational techniques of greater difficulty and complexity. Students wil l be given a thorough, r igorous grounding in diverse gharana- traditions and aesthetic ideologies through focussed l istening, per formative study, guidance from guest ar tists and recommended reading. This course wil l fur ther the students’individual quest to find their own voice and per formative taste and style.

    Part-Time CoursesFor students who cannot devote al l their time to music, we conduct par t- time courses in al l streams. These classes are carr ied out on weekends, and in the evenings on weekdays, to make it convenient for working people or students to attend. These courses aim to introduce students to the fundamentals of music-making and slowly develop their abil ity to give short per formances. The course also focusses on music appreciation so that students can become informed l isteners and can thus appreciate and enjoy good music at a higher level.

    Courses for ChildrenOur children’s courses aim to introduce children in the age group of 6-14 years to the joys of music. These courses have been

    designed to be short,engaging introductions to melody, rhythm and poetry through beautiful, careful ly selected songs that span a

    var iety of moods (playful, patr iotic, musical, devotional, naughty), melodies(simple, sl ightly complex, film, folk, classical, Indian

    and Western), rhythms (marching beats, l il ting film rhythms, folk and classical rhythms) and languages (Marathi, Hindi and its

    dialects, English and Sanskr it).Students wil l be taught select songs from a careful ly created l ist, depending on the teacher ’s

    judgement of the musical and l inguistic abil ities of each batch of children. The song- teaching sessions wil l be interspersed with

    simple introductions to basic musical concepts such as the musical octave and 4, 6, 7 and 8-beat rhythms and eventually, simple

    Ragas and Talas of classical music.

    Certification and DegreesIn al l the above courses, the actual training wil l be carr ied out based on the ancient Indian Gurukul system of education. Students

    wil l be evaluated based on both their theoretical knowledge and their practical per formance abil ity. Successful students wil l be

    given a cer tificate signed by Bharat Ratna Smt. Lata Mangeshkar who is our chairperson and by Prof. Dr. Vishwanath D. Karad, our

    founder president. Students who wish to receive a formal university degree can also apply for our B.A. (Music) and M.A. (Music)

    courses which we offer based on our affil iation with the University of Pune.

    EligibilityStudents who wish to enrol for the ful l- time or par t- time courses need to be above 14 years of age. No educational qualifications

    wil l be considered. Admissions wil l be given solely on the basis of auditions, wherein our panel of experts wil l evaluate the

    students’musical abil ity, previous training, incl ination and level of commitment. Students who wish to pursue a university degree

    wil l have to meet University of Pune el igibil ity cr iter ia for B.A. (Music) and M.A. (Music) courses.

    This is a 3-year intensive course that aims to develop each students’individual per forming abil ity and to give them sound knowledge of the tradition of Hindustani classical music. Hindustani classical music is an ar t form that is based on individual creativity and expression. This course wil l provide students with a vast amount of musical raw mater ial which they wil l be taught to util ise in order to develop their own aesthetic per formative taste and style. This raw mater ial wil l be in the form of a var iety of r ich bandishes belonging to var ious Gharanas in every raga - students wil l be taught these bandishes along with the raga/gharana-aesthetics, vocal techniques and improvisational techniques that they represent. The course wil l include compulsory intensive l istening sessions, recommended reading, l ive music appreciation, workshops by guest ar tists and student per formances, al l of which wil l contr ibute towards the holistic development of each student into a skil ful, knowledgeable per forming musician.
