With speculation mount- ing pilot error may have caused the fatal accident, the South Korean airline confirmed yesterday trainer Lee Jung-Min had received his teaching licence for the Boeing 777 just a month be- fore the crash on Saturday. The trainer, an experi- enced pilot with thousands of flying hours, was as- signed to guide colleague Lee Kang-Kuk, who was landing in the US city for the first time on that model of aircraft. ‘‘This is not something ab- normal. Every trainer has his first day as a trainer,’’ an Asiana spokeswoman said. She said the trainer had more than 3000 hours of flight time on the Boeing 777. The pilot, by contrast, had just 43 hours flying that model but was experienced on other aircraft with more than 9000 hours of flight time under his belt, Asiana said. Two people were killed and more than 180 people injured when the flight from Seoul crash-landed on Saturday. PM mum on Kiwi spy leak By LAURA MCQUILLAN WELLINGTON: US intelli- gence leaker Edward Snowden may have more dirt on a New Zealand spy agency to reveal, but Prime Minister John Key is refus- ing to say what briefings he’s had about potential leaks. Spy links between the United States and its ‘‘Five Eyes’’ intelligence-sharing partners — New Zealand, Australia, Canada and the UK — are among the latest revelations from Snowden, who is on the run from US authorities after revealing details of the US National Se- curity Agency’s Prism spy program to media. He gave Brazilian news- paper O Globo a map show- ing collection points for the NSA’s ‘‘X-Keyscore’’ pro- gram — including the NZ Government Communicat- ions Security Bureau’s (GCSB’s) Waihopai base and four Australian sites. X-Keyscore is understood to process signals dealing with video, voice calls and online communications. Snowden says the NSA’s partners do full dragnet col- lection for calls, texts and data, but how much they get depends on the capability of individual collection sites, offering Britain’s GCHQ as one of the most extensive data collectors. Mr Key has refused to say whether he’s been briefed on what information Snowden might have, but says he has ‘‘a sense’’ of what could be out there. ‘‘I’m aware that (he’s) exfil- trated a whole lot of inform- ation and I’m aware of where New Zealand shares inform- ation,’’ Mr Key said. He would not comment on what X-Keyscore is, but re- iterated that the GCSB did not use its partners’ surveil- lance capabilities to flout laws banning it from spying on New Zealanders. The two teenage victims of the Asiana airline crash are mourned at a gathering in Jiangshan city in China on Monday. The two girls were classmates named Ye Mengyuan and Wang Linjia, who were killed when the plane crashed while trying to land in San Francisco
