Dear Pastor/Parish Administrator, Our faith teaches us that we are called to walk with our brothers and sisters who find themselves on the margins of society and to empower them to bring about change in their communities. By asking your parishioners to support the collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD), you are helping people living in poverty have a say in the decisions that affect their lives. Through this collection, your parishioners can be in soli- darity with those in poverty, supporting them as they break the cycle of poverty and make their communities more just. And remember, 25 percent of funds collected remain in your diocese to fund local anti-poverty projects. Orcas Island in Washington State is stunningly beauti- ful with scenic views of the ocean and greenery. But this island, and the county it is in, have the lowest wages in the state, and housing is often out of reach for many residents. Without safe and affordable housing, people often remain trapped in the cycle of poverty. Meg, a longtime resident of the island, worked hard at her job at the supermarket in town, but stable housing was becoming completely unat- tainable for her. Through your support of the CCHD, Meg has been able to purchase a home. Your support helped the OPAL Community Land Trust assist Meg with buying a home. The trust creates permanently affordable housing for families and seniors and goes beyond home ownership, bringing the community together to support each other and help sustain the character and diversity of Orcas Island. Meg now lives in her own home and is building community and relationships with her neighbors. She says, “A big part of this experience has been the expansion in my mind of the sense of community.” Thank you for your continued support of this collection. The most effective way you can support this collection is to mention it at Mass. Tell Meg’s story, and use the par- ish appeal or bulletin announcements inside. Additional resources, including web ads and a social media toolkit, are available online at www.usccb.org/cchd/collection. If you have any questions, please contact Nicole Germain, assistant director for promotions, at 202-541-3346 or at [email protected]. Thank you for joining us to work on the margins. Simple Steps1. Announce the collection in your parish, using the

bulletin announcements and parish appeal provided, so your parishioners know what it is, when to expect it, and why they should support it. This is the best way to ensure the success of the collection.

2. Preach about the realities of poverty in the United States and the importance of standing in solidarity with those on the margins. The Eucharist, celebrated as a com-munity, teaches us about human dignity, calls us to right relationship with God, ourselves, and others. As the Body of Christ, it sends us on mission to help transform our communities, neighborhoods, and world.

3. Pray for the intercession of Our Lady of Guadalupe for justice, that those living in poverty will be comforted and lifted up, and that they will receive a lasting opportunity to preserve their human dignity through meaningful work.

R/. Lord, hear our prayer.

For our Holy Father, Pope Francis, our bishop, N., and all church leaders, that they will continue to proclaim Christ’s love and compassion for the poor as they educate the Church about the need to work for justice in our world, let us pray to the Lord. R/.

For the Catholic Campaign for Human Development, for all who work to address poverty in this country, and for our parish community, that we may follow Christ’s example of love and solidarity with the poor, let us pray to the Lord. R/.

That we, the People of God, will open our hearts and souls to justice so that we will speak and act in ways that will eliminate poverty and injustice in this country and throughout the world, let us pray to the Lord. R/.

For the 43 million people in our country who expe-rience the pain and suffering of poverty every day, may we join with them to share their burden and at the same time work to create more just communi-ties, let us pray to the Lord. R/.
