Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Today’s article: more on the Bible.

The last time I wrote about the Bible I mentioned that

though the Bible is without error, a person’s

interpretation can contain error. Here are some

principles of interpretation that help to avoid error.

1. Look at the verse in its context. Often reading the

verses before and after can help us to understand what

a particular verse means. But we may also need to

look at a verse in its whole context in the Bible. Is it in

the Old Testament? New Testament?

2. Ask “What did the author intend?” (human author

as well as its Divine author) Was the book intended to

be a history? Or was it intended to teach spiritual

truths?

3. Realize that Tradition, Scripture and the

Magisterium (teaching office of the church) are so

connected and associated that not one of them can

stand without the others. (Just like a table with three

legs.) Because of this, interpretation should not

contradict the others.

Authentic interpretation of the Word of God is

entrusted to the teaching office of the Church

(Magisterium) so if there is any question of

interpretation, find out if the church has said anything

about the passage.

In Christ,

Fr. Dan

CLUSTER NEWS

Stewardship Note

In today’s Gospel, Jesus had planned to

slip away from the crowds for a few

moments of peace and a little rest. When

He saw the people gathered, however,

He put His needs aside to meet the needs

of others. Sometimes, as good stewards,

we are called to do the same.

SPONSOR HIGHLIGHT

We are grateful to all our sponsors who

advertise on the back of the bulletin,

allowing us to receive the bulletin free of

charge to our parishes. A special thank you

to The Point, Tavern and Eatery.
