What is Wordpress ?
Wordpress is a blog platform that can be used with a free version on websites such as wordpress.com. There is also wordpress
provided through hosting websites such as Godaddy, Bluehost, and Host Gator. What makes
it unique is the ability to use it for not only blogging, but websites.
Free vs. Paid Wordpress
• Free• Easy to setup.• Basic themes• Setup and go• Some help via support
forums, etc. • May show ads• Limited to design unless you
pay a premium.• No backups/storage unless
you pay
• Free to add on to a host.
• Free themes or you can buy your own theme
• Host will provide support and help
• Free to customize as much as you want.
• Plugin add ons are available.
Buying from a host tipSo when I buy from a host such as Godaddy, I like to search for coupon codes if I haven’t gotten one already. How do I find them? Google is my best friend! I search several places such as fatwallet.com and coupon cabin (great for shopping online too). There are tons more out there and in most cases, the host may be having a sale. So be sure to look around! Also when buying a domain, make sure to grab .com and the .net. You want people coming to your site only if they are looking for you.
Plugins
• PluginsPlugins are add ons for wordpress and only come with self hosted wordpress. Add on’s can be a twitter message scroller, how many people are following you on social media, buttons from various sites like goodreads, and shelfari and so much more! So where can you find plugins? Everywhere.
Working with Link ListsAdding/Managing Link Lists:Wordpress comes with a link list feature. You’ll see it on the dashboard, on the left called links.
Menus• When you get into the menu section you’ll have the
ability to restructure how everything comes together on your navigation bar.
