    A NEW STEP IN OUR HISTORY!

    1936 Founded as the Alverno Campus elementary School

    1989 - Became a private, independent school

    1996 - Accredited by the Independent Schools Association

    of the Central States

    2003 - Became a public, charter school through UWM

    2013 - Will open a second school Woodlands East

    Why the announcementnow?

    Up to this point, Woodlands

    School, Inc. has been

    involved in very private andserious negotiations.

    We were requested by legal

    counsel not to make a public

    announcement until theagreement had been

    approved by the Woodlands

    Board of Trustees and by

    Potawatomi Council.

    WHERE IT IS LOCATED

    Woodlands East will be at 3121 W. State Street.

    It was the former Indian Community School.

    Land is owned by the US Government and leased to the

    Forest County Potawatomi Community.

    Woodlands School Inc. will have a 10 year sublease withoptions to renew.

    WHY THIS SITE WAS CHOSEN

    Thank you to the Board Trustees who worked on this

    project. Special thanks to the Trustees who served on

    the search committee. Brenda Hartwig-Rahmani, Chair

    Jennifer Maney Matt ONeill

    Criteria were: Already a school building

    In City of Milwaukee

    Easily accessible

    This site meets the criteria and the terms of the lease are

    attractive.

    WHAT THE BUILDING IS LIKE

    The building is 3 floors with a lower level.

    Has at least 15 homerooms to accommodate 5 units:

    4K/5K, 1/2, 3/4, 5/6, and 7/8.

    Will be able to accommodate about 360 children when

    completely operational. Has rooms for administration and specialties: library, art,

    music, language, special education, computer lab, etc.

    Has a cafeteria, gym with stage, and indoor play area.

    PLANS FOR 2013

    Woodlands East will open with two units: K-4/K-5,

    Grades 1/2.

    Will occupy the lower level and first floor.

    Will offer music, art, language, Phy Ed, and specialeducation.

    Plan is to accept as many as 144 students the first year.

    A grade will be added each year.

    PLANS FOR ENROLLMENT

    Woodlands East is now accepting applicants.

    There is a current waiting list of students who are being

    contacted.

    If you know of interested families, please contact Ms.

    McKenna. Woodlands parents are welcome to apply.

    No parents from Woodlands will be asked to move

    children to Woodlands East.

    PUBLIC EVENTS

    Ground breaking ceremony--TBD Invited will be public officials, UWM Office of Charter

    Schools, Colleges, other charter Schools and

    Woodlands faculty and parents.

    Tours of Woodlands (NOT Woodlands East) will be

    available to any family interested in the new school

    There will be a mailing to the neighborhood near

    Woodlands East informing families about the school.

    Woodlands East is a replication of Woodlands.

    Woodlands East will use the same guiding principles.

    FACULTY

    Woodlands East will start with: 6 teachers

    6 teaching assistants

    4 part time specialists (music, art, Phy Ed, and language)

    Applications for positions are now being taken. Special Education and Library staff will be shared at this

    time.

    No teachers from Woodlands will be required to move.

    Woodlands East might include some teachers from

    Woodlands.

    ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE

    Woodlands East was granted a 5-year charter by the

    UWM Office of Charter Schools on February 7, 2013.

    Principal of Woodlands East will be Maureen Sullivan.

    Principal of Woodlands will be Patty Rogers .

    Maureen Sullivan, will also be the Executive Director of

    Woodlands School, Inc.

    Responsibilities will include fund development and

    community relations for both schools. The Board of Trustees will oversee Woodlands Inc.

    IMPACT ON WOODLANDS

    In terms of day to day operations, there will be nochanges in the operation of Woodlands.

    Because Woodlands East is a replication model, this

    means that Woodlands had to identify and clarify its

    model of instruction the past two years.

    So this has already had a positive impact on

    Woodlands.

    IMPACT ON WOODLANDS SCHOOL, INC

    In terms of visibility and public relations, Woodlands

    School, Inc. has received support and encouragement toreplicate from: UWM + Department of Public Instruction

    PAVE +Wisc Innovative Schools Network

    Alverno +Multi-Age Learning Network.

    In terms of longer term viability and success, WoodlandsSchool, Inc. will be stronger.

    There will opportunities for combined inservices, sharing

    of curriculum, and advancement opportunities for staff.

    The website for Woodlands School, Inc. will beupgraded.
