The Kimberly Area School District does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, ancestry, creed, pregnancy, marital status, parental status, sexual orien-tation, sex, (including transgender status, change of sex or gen-der identity), or physical, mental, emotional, or learning disabil-
ity ("Protected Classes") in any of its student program and activities.
Dear Woodland Families!
I was hoping for no snow this Winter but as it is Wisconsin, we welcomed in enough to cover the ground. Now we just need the temperatures to warm up a bit so we can get the kids outside. As we enter the Spring Semester, it has been exciting to see and hear the growth from all of your chil-dren, and I hope you too see and hear the improvements each day.
Each year I am impressed with the strong parent support we have for our students. The Woodland community is strong, and I see it each day here at school. Most recently, we had a great turnout of parent volunteers for our Winter Carnival. I always love seeing parents and grandparents at our school, and it is a strong sign of the commitment that you have for Woodland. Our PTO continues to do amazing things for our school, and recently supported our Music Department with some in-strument purchases. Our kids will benefit greatly! Last but not least, each day we feed nearly 500 students in our cafeteria and without the help of our lunch supervisors, we could not do it! We have been fortunate to have great people supporting our students in all situations, and the results of this make our school simply amazing!
We have had a busy few weeks and some more to come! As mentioned earlier, our Winter Carni-val was a hit and students learned about the Winter Olympics, and how the athletes use similar community values to what we have at Woodland. On February 7th, our Grade 2 welcomed in an author, Chris Newbold, who shared his books, how and why he wrote them, and then interacted with our second graders to write another book about Woodland Elementary School. The students had a fun time learning with Chris, and they are super excited that they got to write a book with him, about their school! Coming up, we have our next Trading Post Day on February 16th, and this is also our next Spirit Day which is “Woodland Wear” Day. Finally, our PTO Family Night is coming up on March 2nd!
Continued on Page Two
Lastly, as you know, our students do not have school in the afternoon on Friday, February 16th. During that afternoon, our teachers will again be engaged in professional development around literacy, math, and other content area learning targets. Each time our teachers collabo-rate, they are talking about the very specific needs of each child. The level of specificity that our teachers have around your student needs is what drives their work, and the outstanding learning that occurs each day. Our goal is to notice important things each day about all learners, so that we can deliver what they need the same or next day. Our teachers continue to refine their crafts and I am proud of the work they do to ensure that the students at Woodland get the best. Our teachers remain committed to “our learning for theirs” as a cornerstone to their daily work.
With that, I hope you continue to have an enjoyable Wisconsin winter. As always, my door is open and I welcome you to stop by, email, or call anytime that you have questions, comments, or concerns. Take care and thanks again for your continued support! Sincerely,
Timothy M. Doleysh, Ph.D.

TUNDRA TALES READING PROGRAM
FORWARD EXAM
It is soon going to be that time of year when we will be administering the state assessment, the Forward
Exam. The testing window for this assessment is March 19th to May 4th. Third grade testing will take
place between April 9th and April 19th, while the 4th grade window runs from March 20th through
April 27th. Most testing will occur in the AM. As in the past, we ask that families try to avoid testing
times for appointments, vacations, etc. as the missed test will then need to be made up during one of our
make-up times. Make-up tests will be administered during the week of April 30th through May 4th. Thank
you in advance and please contact your child's teacher with any questions.
Network Photo is coming to Woodland on Tuesday, February 20th to take our whole school photo. Each grade is going to wear a specific color to represent one of the Olympic Rings. Please encourage your children to wear a shirt or sweatshirt in this color next Tuesday. Thank you!

LOST & FOUND
FAMILY FUN NIGHT
Family Fun Night is Friday, March 2nd. Order forms for the basket raffle were sent home with students last week and a form is also attached. The theme list for each classroom is attached. Please note that photos of baskets are available on the PTO website.
PB&J CHALLENGE
Woodland Elementary is participating in a PB&J Challenge through Feeding
America. Keep sending in plastic jars of peanut butter and/or jelly throughout
the entire month of February to support those who face hunger in our commu-
nities. All students who donate may order a free Bucks ticket. Please see
the attached letter for more details.
The Kimberly Area School District is accepting registrations for 4K/5K for the 2018/2019 school year. Regis-tration forms can be completed online at http://www.kimberly.k12.wi.us/departments/enrollment/kindergarten. Please contact Jodi Neuber at [email protected] if you have any questions.
4K/5K REGISTRATION
OPEN ENROLLMENT
The timeline for submitting open enrollment applications is February 5, 2018 to April 30, 2018 at 4:00 pm.
A link to the open enrollment application will be available on the Kimberly Area School District website,
www.kimberly.k12.wi.us, beginning February 5th. To obtain more information about open enrollment,
please contact Jen Bixler at 423-4166.
Please stop in or have your student check the lost and found for any items they may be missing. The lost and found bins are overflowing with winter gear. Lost and found bins can be found in the Woodland commons or in each of our grade level hallways.
MORNING DROP-OFF
Woodland staff is continually looking to make the morning drop-off
safer and more efficient for parents and students. Please stay in a sin-
gle file line and have your child ready to unload when you get stopped
along the curb. Students should unload even if they are not in the
“front” spot. Six or seven vehicles should be unloading at the same
time. When all vehicles move up and stop, the process will be repeat-
ed by having all vehicles along the curb unload. Waiting to get close
to the office doors slows down the whole line. If everyone unloads along the curb,
children will not be crossing traffic to get into school. Also, the area between the or-
ange pylons is for day care and buses only. Please do not unload in this area. Safety
is our biggest concern. Thank you for your support in keeping our kids safe!
School Bus Driver Appreciation week is February 12th-16th.
Dedicated bus drivers provide an invaluable service in working
tirelessly to make sure that students in the Kimberly Area School
District get safely to and from school everyday. Please take a
moment to thank a bus driver that you may know.
BUS DRIVER APPRECIATION WEEK
SUBSTITUTE LUNCH SUPERVISORS NEEDED
Woodland School is looking for substitute lunchroom supervisors. The hours are 11:00 am—1:00 pm and
includes both indoor and outdoor supervision. Please contact Woodland’s Office Manager, Peggy Mueller,
at 920-730-0924, option 2, if you would like more information about this position.
We receive many worthwhile requests to be included in our newslet-
ters and weekly notes. Since we can-not possibly include them all
here, please remember to go to the District website frequently and
check out the Community Events. There are more great opportunities
and activities listed there.

SEEKING SUBSTITUTE PARAPROFESSIONALS
In following this year’s PBIS theme, “TEAM—Together Everyone Achieves More”, on Friday,
February 2nd, Woodland Elementary students celebrated the hard work they have been
putting into following the Woodland Way by enjoying an Olympic themed winter carnival.
Each classroom chose a country, and decorated their door and made that country’s flag. Stu-
dents paraded into the gym with their flags for the opening ceremony and then had a great
time participating in various Olympic themed activities that took place throughout the school,
including inflatables, an obstacle course, crafts, face painting, a DJ, and more. The day
wrapped up with closing ceremonies in the gym and a video highlighting the events of the
day. Congratulations to all of our students who follow the Woodland Way! Special thanks to
Mrs. Hermus and the PBIS Committee for organizing such a fun event!
WINTER CARNIVAL
AUTHOR VISIT
Last Wednesday, February 7th, Woodland Elementary 2nd graders were visited by children’s author and
University of Wisconsin-Madison alumni Chris Newbold. Carter Rosen, a student in Mrs. Twombly’s 2nd grade
class, picked out Mr. Newbold’s book “The Big Bucky Badger Mystery” at the school’s book fair. Carter en-
joyed the book so much and wondered if there were more books in the series and how he could find anoth-
er book written by the same author. With the help of Mrs. Twombly, the students were able to connect and
schedule a visit with Mr. Newbold. Students learned that there were two other books in the series and the
books were mysteries about mascots and missing footballs or basketballs. The books have a theme around
honesty, which is one of the community values at Woodland Elementary School. Under Mr. Newbold’s guid-
ance, the students began work on a book about their own mascot, Wolfie. Each second grade student will
have a role in the creation of the book. They have hopes of publishing their book! The morning proved to
be both fun and a great learning experience for all involved.
AWAKE CHOIR FESTIVAL
Woodland Elementary 4th grade students participated in the AWAKE Choir Festival in Manitowoc WI on February 3, 2018. They rehearsed during their lunch recess for a month and practiced their parts at home with recordings on the AWAKE music site. This was an amazing experience for the students. They learned how to work with other’s to read and sing 2 part music.
The songs they performed were: Our Gallant Ship - Susan Brumfield; Grow Little Tree - Andrea Ramsey; The Wind - Franklin Gallo; Sisi Ni Moja - Jacob Narverud; Shine on Me - Dilworth (Two-part). They joined over 100 other students from around the Wisconsin area who have the same Kodaly Music literacy training as they have. They were directed by a wonderful clinician Dr. Franklin Gallo from Silver Lake College.
