Dear Springfield Elementary School Families, Our second semester to the school year is underway and started with the excitement of our “One School, One Book” program! We appreciate all of the support and participation in reading Kenny and the Dragon. Our program started with an introductory skit starring several of our staff members on our first day back from winter break. It concluded with a “Read-In” for our students who also enjoyed refreshments provided by our PTA this past Wednesday. We hope you enjoyed our “One School, One Book” program this year! There are a few exciting events taking place for our school and district during the month of February. On Friday, February 3, we will be having our third annual “Daddy-Daughter Dance” from 6:30-8:30 PM. A big thanks to our PTA for organizing and supporting this event for our students and families. We are also in the process of organizing our first “Mother-Son Breakfast” scheduled for February 24th. Please be on the look-out for more information regarding this event! I am excited to make you aware of the “Fort Mill Cookin’ 4 The Kids” event organized by the Foundation for Fort Mill Schools. This is a chili cook-off event to support the students and staff of the Fort Mill School District. Media Messages: Reading is SNOW much fun! Hope this chilly weather has everyone inside reading! The library would like to continue to remind all that we are collecting the following:

Starburst candy, more starburst candy! 24 piece puzzles, 100 piece puzzles, old ink cartridges!

Thank you so much for your support!

Technology: In Technology we have been working on Internet Research Skills. All students in First through Fifth grade have learned what keywords are. The vocabulary I have placed emphases on is keywords, search engines, citing websites, the domains (or end of web addresses) and the need to check websites for accuracy.

State testing will be administered on the computer this year, therefore keyboard skills will be beneficial to your child. To assist with keyboarding practice, Fort Mill School District has bought the rights to Typing Agent https://fortmill.typingagent.com/. The students should be familiar with their login information. It is similar to their Google Drive login (username: the part before the @ of their email and the same password). I encourage all students in grades 3-5 to practice Typing Agent at home. Unfortunately, the amount of time spent in technology class does not provide sufficient amount of keyboard practice. Homeroom teachers have been encouraged to help with keyboarding skills by creating authentic experiences for students using Chomebooks for research and typing written responses. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me, their homeroom teacher, or the school testing coordinator, Ms. Brogdon.

P.E.: Field Day will be held on Thursday, May 18th for Kindergarten, First, and Second grades. It will be held on Friday, May 19th for Third, Fourth, and Fifth grades. The entire day will take place out on our athletic fields. There will be a variety of events for the students to participate in, and we would love your help! Be on the lookout for a link to sign up to help!

I am in the process of planning some Family Fitness Nights for the spring time. Please watch for more information and how to sign up!

If anyone would be interested in attending a Summer Fun and Fitness Camp please email Mr. Layman at [email protected] with questions.

Music: February is an exciting month in music at Springfield. Our 1st and 2nd graders will be presenting a ”A Beary Merry Holiday” musical on Thursday, Feb. 9th at 6:30 pm.

Our 3rd graders will be performing, “Jazz it Up!” at Fort Mill High School on Feb. 25th.

Email Mrs. Kawakami if you have any questions.

Notes from the Nurse Ms. Lindsay Mauney, RN

February has been designated National Children’s Dental Health Month to help raise awareness about the importance of children’s oral healthcare. According to the American Dental Association (ADA), children are recommended to brush their teeth

for two minutes twice per day (morning and night) or as directed by a dentist or physician. Flossing helps to remove plaque and prevent gum disease and cavities. Remember to replace your child’s tooth brush every three months or sooner if needed. Regular appointments with your child’s dentist are an essential part of keeping your child healthy because your child’s oral health goes hand in hand with their overall health.

On another note, The Lions Club will be coming to the school on Wednesday, February 8th and Thursday, February 9th to conduct vision screenings for kindergarten, first and third graders. The Lions Club uses the Welch Allyn screening device that is similar in appearance to a digital camera to identify children whose eyes may have some type of defect. Thank you to the Lions Club for providing this service free of charge to our students! Remember the screening is FREE of charge for our students; however, if anyone should want to donate to the Vision Screening a check can be made out to the Tega Cay Lions Foundation and specify SPOT Vision Screening on the memo line. The foundation is a 501c3, so any donations are tax deductible.
