Woodend Goes Green! Queen’s 90 th Nursery Celebrations! Projects on Site! Old Vs New Boiler Male Changing Room Revamp & Much More! Message from the Management Team Hello, welcome to the first issue of our newly revamped Woodend Hospital Newsletter. We hope you like the fresh new look! I’m sure many of you will have seen and heard lots about the process of ‘Integration’. With the ‘go-live’ date of the Aberdeen City Health & Social Care Partnership on the 1 st of April a couple of months ago now, you might be thinking ’what’s changed?’. Many of our services continue to look and deliver care in much the same way, however in the long term new developments will happen in phases & changes to our services will happen in different places. We have formed a group within the service that will lead the identification and development of these improvements and changes called the Strategic Leadership Group (SLG). Following discussion within the SLG and in light of the focus of the integration legislation on the development of localities a test of change principle was identified. A series of engagement events with staff at Woodend were held to discuss this idea further, which highlighted positive support for the test of change. In essence, the emerging idea was to align one of the four elderly rehabilitation wards at Woodend to one of the localities. In practical terms, this means cohorting all patients from a locality in one rehab ward. This test of change will start from the 4 th of July enabling an elderly rehabilitation ward, ward 16, to understand the benefits and any disadvantages of a locally aligned way of working. Finally, the process of redesigning the senior leadership team consisting of the lead roles within the Operations Team for the new partnership is now progressing. There will be a Head of locality for each of the localities (North, South, Central and West) along with a Head of Older People & Specialist Rehabilitation, Head of Mental Health & Learning Disability and a Clinical Director (Medical Lead). The organisational change process has begun and further information will be forthcoming following appointments to these roles. Excellent care from all involved. Always have a smile on their faces, thanks especially to Lisa and Ruth who saw my husband in the clinic and put all of my and his worries at ease. Michael Christie MBE has been a hospital volunteer since 1990 and currently visits patients on a weekly basis in the Stroke Rehab Unit and the Links@Woodend. He is also a Committee member of The Friends of Woodend.

Michael was involved in an accident at his work in 1988 which resulted in him having a broken neck and his whole body was paralysed apart from his left hand. Six months later, following intensive rehabilitation at Edenhall, Musselburgh, which had a unit for spinal injury patients, Michael was able to walk out of the unit on crutches. Michael was so appreciative of the help he received in his recovery that he wanted to give something back to the NHS on a local basis and 2 years following his accident he started volunteering at the City Hospital.

The set of dominoes in the picture were gifted to ward 17 and Michael is in the process of making a few more sets which will be placed in the activity boxes in the wards.

I have been coming to this hospital regula rly over the last few years, the staff have always been exce llent in everything they do. As an amputee, the care I have received is first class. They do a marvellous job sometimes in difficult circumstances.

Chaplains on the move........in more ways than one!

The Chaplaincy offices at Woodend have moved recently but not far. To make way for the two remaining clinics at Woolmanhill, we have vacated our offices in the old ward 6 corridor and have moved into the Admin Hub at the far end of the old ward. The move was first spoken about in 2014, just a few months after I came into post here at Woodend, so when we finally cleared out and moved in the middle of May, it was the end of one chapter and the beginning of another. Our location may be different but our service remains the same. I am here to support patients, their families, staff and volunteers around the hospital in many ways; as I say to students and staff when I give talks about what spiritual care is and what chaplains do, I am here for all faiths and none and happy to be a listening ear. Feel free to pop up and see me in my new surroundings......I’m always happy to put the kettle on. On another note, out-with work, I enjoy keeping fit and this year decided to take up running. I found the NHS Couch to 5k Podcasts the secret to me mastering it this time (I have tried many times in the past) but never thought I’d ever run 5k without stopping. I did though, completing the route at Run Garioch in March. The same afternoon, clearly still buzzing from the satisfaction of that, I found myself signing up for the Aberdeen 10k. A few weeks into my training, I was beginning to think I had maybe been a little over ambitious but having been persuaded to raise funds for the Robertson Family Roof Garden at ARI, I knew I had to stick with it. So, on Sunday 15th May I completed the 10k and also raised almost £300 for the Roof Garden. The photo here is me with my eldest son who also took part – completing the run in 53 minutes, some 20 minutes quicker than me – but it was great to see him waiting at the finish line. I plan to keep up my running and have entered the Perth 10k in August. Do you think there will ever be ‘Rapid Response Chaplains’.........?

The picture on the left shows Jacqui Forbes accepting a donation from Mr Alan Davison, patient and Longside Football Manager. Mr Davidson presented Jacqui with a cheque for £1123.00 which was raised by Longside Football by having a charity disco and raffle held on 16th January 2016.

The football team wanted to give something back to Mr Davidson after all the work and support he has given them over the years. Mr Davidson in return wanted to donate the money raised to Parkinson's Nurses. The money has been deposited into the PD Fund and Jacqui’s colleague Freda has hand made a thank you card to send to Mr Davidson from the Parkinson’s Nurses.

NHS Grampian has launched a pictorial menu initiative to help a wide range of patients with communication difficulties to choose their meals when they are in hospital.

Those with any communication impairment or who have English as a second language, have to rely on others to make their meal choices as the current system involves reading and writing. The menus will be of great benefit to provide the person centered care we all strive to deliver and allow individuals with additional needs the opportunity to be empowered to choose their own meals.

Old vs New! The ongoing Woodend boiler project has finally met its match, up against its new replacement! We managed to snap a last minute picture before boiler number 3(on the right) is removed within the next couple of weeks.

Further to this, the very familiar landmark of the Woodend chimney is set to be taken down starting mid June/ July.

Staff, Children and Parents of Woodend Nursery all met at the Duthie Park on Saturday 21st May for a sponsored Teddy Toddle and Picnic to raise funds for Woodend Nursery. It was a great turn out considering it was a cold and windy day and everyone really enjoyed it. The children received a medal for completing the walk and we all had a picnic and play in the park after. Thanks to everyone who has raised money through sponsors and we look forward to getting our final total once all sponsor forms are in.

Quality Improvement

Three AHPs from Woodend Hospital were among 13 NHS Grampian staff who completed the 1st AHP Leadership for Improvement Programme. Starting in June 2015, Head of Service Improvement in NHS Grampian, Jenny Ingram assisted by Ann McKenzie, Lead AHP in Moray expertly guided us through the Quality Improvement (QI) Programme during 9 full days of teaching and workshops, culminating in a poster presentation to NHSG Managers and Leads.

Christine Rothnie, Prosthetic and Orthotic Department produced a poster describing the Quality Improvement processes used to drive forward the Supervision and Case Review Project for clinical staff.

Fiona Douglas, Specialist Rehabilitation Physiotherapist, wrote up a project using MDT group therapy to enhance treatment in Horizons and reduce waiting times.

Neil Taylor, Radiographer, concentrated on improving patient flow through the radiography department.

These members of staff are now more than familiar with such terms as Driver Diagrams and PDSA cycles (not the animal type), and even the plethora of QI work that is available to all on Twitter! We would like to thank our mentors Fiona Mitchellhill and Jenny Ingram for their support throughout.

Having taken the QI process to completion our role is now to assist other AHPs who are embarking on their own QI journey. Our lunch and learn sessions are at an early stage, however we plan to expand and include other QI ‘rebels’. Please feel free to email either [email protected], [email protected] in the first instance or follow them on Twitter,
