CONFERENCE OVERVIEW During the course of the past two decades, research has provided critical insight about what works to prevent, treat, and sustain recovery for women and families impacted by substance use disorders. Since women were not often included in research prior to the 1990s, it is a continued priority of the conference to ensure that participants have opportunities to update their knowledge, skills and abilities based upon up-to-date research and evidence-based practice. OBJECTIVES At the 2016 conference, the content of each session will support the recommendations set forth by SAMHSA/CSAT to address the specific needs of women by continuing to train providers to: • Provide trauma-informed and gender-informed care, utilizing evidence-based treatment models • Identify the importance and impact of socioeconomic issues and differences, relationships, and caregiver roles among women, as these interact with recovery needs • Recognize roles and gender expectations across cultures that affect societal attitudes toward women that use substances • Implement gender specific recovery principles with respect to women’s unique physiological and social aspects of addiction • Integrate a multidisciplinary approach to women’s treatment that maintains a gender-responsive treatment environment across settings and dovetails with Whole Person Care • Empower pregnant women and children by incorporating the tenets of the NC Pregnancy and Opioid Project that ensures optimal gender-based care while in recovery • Develop a plan for routine tobacco use, screening and counseling of reproductive age and pregnant women • Screen for substance abuse/use during pregnancy to match women with local resources that can improve their access to care • Formulate strategies for counseling pregnant women with depression to optimize positive outcomes in this population • Differentiate between methadone and buprenorphine treatment protocols in order to provide the optimal prescriptive plan for a pregnant woman • Implement strategies to enhance rapport with women experiencing dual diagnosis during pregnancy The 2016 Women’s Recovery Conference is celebrating “30 Years of Women’s Wisdom” in gender specific treatment. The conference offers as many as 16.0 credit hours, a variety of credit options, and is designed for substance abuse, mental health, psychology, criminal justice, human services and healthcare professionals.
