The “dawn” of a new era in Coyote women’s basketball is off to a 2-0

start for first year head coach Dawn Plitzuweit. Plitzuweit (PLITTS-zoo-white) has guided programs to 19 winning seasons in 21 years of coaching experience at the NCAA Division I and Division II levels including 10 NCAA Tournament appearances. As a head coach, she led Grand Valley State to the 2006 NCAA Division II national title and Northern Kentucky through the Division I transition over the past four seasons.

South Dakota debuted the Sanford Coyote Sports Center Sunday with an

80-74 victory over Stephen F. Austin. The Sports Center is the Coyotes’ first new home since 1979. The Sports Center features a 6,000-seat arena, a 7,500-square foot weight room, locker rooms with team lounges, a pair of practice courts and athletic training facilities.

South Dakota boasted its most successful Division I season in

2015-16 with a 32-6 record and Women’s National Invitation Tournament title. The 2015-16 campaign was spearheaded by five seniors, including Summit League Player of the Year Nicole Seekamp, who made up 57 percent of the team’s scoring, 45 percent of the rebounding and 63 percent of the assists.

This year’s starting lineup features a pair of seniors, forward Bridget Arens

and center Abigail Fogg, who had five starts between them in three seasons. A pair of sophomore guards, Allison Arens and Jaycee Bradley, came in as reserves a year ago. Freshman guard Ciara Duffy rounds out the starting five. The Coyotes’ top returner and lone returning starter from last season is Duffy’s older sister, senior Caitlin Duffy, who averaged 8.8 points and 3.7 rebounds. Duffy is currently sidelined with an ankle injury.

South Dakota boasts the nation’s second-longest winning streak of

eight games. The Coyotes also have a 14-game winning streak in league play which ranks eighth nationally. The streak helped them close the regular season with a 15-1 mark and win a second consecutive Summit League title.

USD was picked third in the Summit League Preseason Poll behind South

Dakota State and IUPUI. USD and SDSU are the only two to remain undefeated.

The reigning Summit League Player of the Week is Allison Arens. Arens

earned her first career weekly honor after averaging 24.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, five assists, two steals and just 1.5 turnovers in a pair of games. She shot 62.5 percent (15-of-24) from the field and 83.3 percent (15-of-18) from the free-throw line. Arens is averaging a team-high 37.5 minutes on the court this season after just 8.5 minutes per game last year.

Arens’ 49 points after opening weekend leads the league and ranks

sixth nationally. She has also made the 11th-most free throws in the nation (15).

Freshman guard Madison McKeever is tied for 23rd nationally with seven

steals between her first two games.

The Coyotes boast the second-best scoring offense in the Summit after the

first weekend of games. Western Illinois leads the way at 90.5 points per game, aided by a 113-29 win over Monmouth (Div. III). South Dakota is averaging 77.5 points per game.

While South Dakota has never met an SEC team before, the Coyotes are

11-37 all-time against the Power 5 Conferences. Three of those 11 wins came last season (Illinois, Minnesota, Oregon).

There are two pairs of sisters on this year’s team, Bridget and Allison

Arens along with Caitlin and Ciara Duffy. It was announced last week that Monica Arens has signed an NLI to play for the Coyotes next season as well. The Arens’ sisters are the first pair of sisters on the team since Maggie and Hannah Youngberg in 2008-09.

Plitzuweit brought a new motion offense to the Coyotes this year. To go

with it, the Coyotes are shooting 49.1 percent (53-of-108) from the field, which ranks first in the Summit League and 35th in the nation. South Dakota shot 59.6 percent against Stephen F. Austin on Sunday.

The Coyotes spent 12 days in Australia in August, visiting

Melbourne, Cairnes and Sydney. Fogg was the Coyotes’ top scorer in two of the three games. Senior guard Jasmine Trimboli tallied a team-high 20 points in the second game. Blogs from the team’s trip are still available to view on GoYotes.com.
