in Concert

Vicki Lottes accompanied six viola students to Webster University on Saturday, March 16 for a Viola Master Class with Andrew Duck-les (Los Angeles, CA). Students participating included:

Roland Prenzler, Michael Butler, Miranda Henry, Margaret Berkley, Anna Tichenor, Margaret Rose Halpin

Four of the students and Mrs. Lottes were able to stay for dinner and the fan-tastic concert! Viola student Miranda Henry commented that she enjoyed play-ing on the big stage and "Mr. Duckles gave me suggestions about dynamics and the amount of bow I should use for different effects." said Anna Tichen-or. "He was 'fluent in viola' and as well as helpful and very nice.” She also said " Mr. Duckles discussed 'bringing out my low C string' and to play with flat hair for a bigger tone." Roland Prenzler, 12, commented that Mr. Duckles was kind and clear with his ideas --"He helped me with my bow contact point on the string and worked with me on martele by keeping each bow stroke the same length. Margaret Berkley was impressed with Mr. Duckles' explanations and demonstrations of different bowing styles. He asked Margaret to "play to the back wall of the Theater."

All of the students remembered Mr. Duckles' 19 inch 'monster' viola. He con-tinually reminded the students to play with variety by putting lots of contrasts in their playing with dynamics, phrasing, articulation, and personal style. The concert he gave was outstanding and it was great to sit on stage very close to the soloist.
