Imagining a New FrameworkMichaelia Cash - Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for WomenGovernment policy alone can’t reduce the gender pay gap but it can assist in addressing some of the known causes for the gap. One cause is the under-representation of women in the areas of science, technology, engineering and

maths. This, and the fact that too few girls are taking up trades and apprenticeships is a concern to the government. The Minister assisting the Prime Minister for Women, Michaelia Cash, will share some recent initiatives that could reverse the trend.

Offering a World of PossibilityEveral Pearse - Principal, Southern River CollegeOn a mission to increase enrolments, retention and career opportunities for her students Everall Pearse changed the way this College worked. SRC now has a comprehensive career exploration and

development program and focuses on expanding the career choices of girls, particularly in relation to STEM subjects and mining occupations. It is host to WA’s first Minerals and Energy Academy.

The Future in ActionSarah Jayne Flatters - Director, TradeUP AustraliaHaving completed her electrical apprenticeship in 2013, Sarah Jayne Flatters loves her trade and is eager to see more girls make the same choice. The newly established not-for-profit TradeUP Australia is reaching out to women and

girls across the state – her workshops dispel the myths around using power tools, at the same time promoting careers that offer diversity, longevity, flexibility and high returns.

Employers Creating OpportunitiesBasil Scagliotta - General Manager, Gino’s Car Craft Panel & PaintGino’s Panel & Paint has been operating as an automotive repair centre for 32 years. Clearly Basil is doing something right. A winner of numerous awards the company prides itself on having highly

trained skilled staff – and he surprised his team and customers alike when he employed a young female apprentice.

Equal Pay Day is just one day in the year where we focus on the causes of the gender pay gap and what we can do to change this.• One of the reasons for the pay gap is the gender-

segregated patterns in Australia’s workforce, e.g. in the construction, mining and utilities industries women only account for around 12%, 15% and 23% of employees respectively.

• Increased girls’ participation and success in non-traditional subjects has not translated into employment in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) or other in-demand, high-income non-traditional occupations and industries.

• Despite years of affirmative action in schools and awareness about gender stereotyping, girls continue to select traditional, or feminised, areas of work where they are at risk of high rates of casualisation and low rates of pay.
