In print media, there is a concept known as the lead-time. It is the space between the preparation of an article,

and its actual publication. Lead-times can wreak havoc on a journalist’s best efforts. There is an iconic black and white picture of newly elected Harry Truman grinning from ear to ear while hoisting a copy of the Chicago Daily Tribune on the morning after his upset victory to become president. “Dewey Defeats Truman!” reads the banner headline.

No journalist wants that by-line.And there is second way the “lead”

impacts print. The lead in this case is the first

paragraph of the story. Leads should be engaging, informative, and reflective of what’s to come.

But even the snappiest lead cannot substitute for the story itself. In print, if it’s worth writing down, if it’s worth introducing an idea, then certainly that idea should be worth exploring.

But in a 24/7 news cycle, things move fast. Lead times have shortened and leads have been buried. Important topics, worthy of reflection, have to be quickly put aside to make way for the next new thing.

When the news of the day becomes the news of the moment, and serious subjects are reduced to sound bytes, it’s time to slow down and study the way we communicate with each other.

Think about this: What if all the talking heads screaming across the

Time to Follow the Lead

desk had to actually stop and write it all down.

At Bowling Green Home & Lifestyle, we encourage readers to go ahead, and take their time. Follow the lead.

Let columnist Dave Kirgan and his lovely wife Sally take you with them on a tour of the vintage shops in Barren County. Explore the ins and outs of all-wheel drive with experts at local car dealerships and get advice on winter driving.

Follow the journey our feature home took from a 100-year old farmhouse to this modern family home and join builder Tim Graham as he shares his passion for green infrastructure.

Learn how to recognize the signs of damage from a shifting foundation and when to get help from the experts.

Bowling Green Home & Lifestyle won’t change the world, but with luck it will remind us to sit down, slow down, and enjoy the story that unfolds.

It’s not a dream home

without natural gas.

Whether it’s heating your water, warming your home or helping you cook for

family and friends, natural gas is the smart energy choice that saves you both

time and money. It’s also safer, more efficient and better for the environment

than other traditional energy resources. So spend less energy powering your

dream home — and more energy enjoying it. Choose natural gas.

HUMOR

BY BERNIE ERICKSON

Acceptance of change — a tried and true

home study

A few years ago a Lhasa-Bichon, a

white ball of fluff named Rocco,

joined our family.

I didn’t care for the idea of him being

in a small kennel all day, so we bought

two baby gates and he spent his days

snoozing in the back in a small foyer

between the kitchen and dining room.

Ten years later, I realized I was sick

of climbing over baby gates. I bought a

collapsible open-top crate that could

live in the corner of the dining room

under a nice, sunny window. It only took

a decade for me to figure that out.

Every single thing I do in my profes-

sional life involves changes in living sur-

rounding, whether it be working with

clients buying or selling residential real

estate, renovating investment property,

or writing observations on home and

life in the suburb.

This makes it challenging being mar-

ried to someone who is deliriously and

defensively content with things just the

way they are.

The home we bought in 2005 was built

in 1993. A few things have been updated

since 2005, and a thing or two or 10 have

not.

In life, one thing leads to another, and

before you know it the original goal is

accomplished along with others you

didn’t even know you had.

The two door casings between the

kitchen, dining room and foyer had

taken a beating with baby gates. They

needed more than a scrubbing and paint

touch up. They needed a decent sanding,

Page 13: The Tests of Time - TownNews...Imagine the possibilities Imagine the Convenience • Imagine the Beauty • Imagine the Luxury Tim Graham, President Your kitchen can be everything

priming and repainting.

It would be a good time to also paint

the interior of the coat closet, which was

the original 1993 emerald green. Dark

colors in dark closets seemed like a good

idea in the ’90s.

I emptied the closet, sorted through

13 years of accumulation, took down the

shelving system, and repaired chips and

divots in the walls; it made perfect sense

to paint the foyer and closet.

The project went well. Doorframes

looked great. Divots in the closet walls

were repaired and an integrated wire-

shelving system installed. Insurance

folders from 2008-2009 were shredded

and thrown out. And, I had leftover

paint from the 2016 front hall and music

room project. It seemed like a good time

to paint the upstairs back bedroom.

The navy blue leftover paint can in the

laundry room had “back bedroom 2007”

written in Sharpie marker. Yikes.

“If it’s been 10 years, even if it doesn’t

need paint; it needs paint.” This makes

total sense to me and other normal

people. Not quite so much to someone

who saves every cottage cheese con-

tainer and petrochemical microwave

safe baking dish that enters the home.

When I got the puppy dog crate for

Rocco, I used a common acclimation

technique to get him used to the idea.

Set up the crate in a central spot. Leave

it a day or two. Move it to the spot it’s

going to remain and put his bed next to

the crate, and then into the crate. It was

a non-issue getting the dog comfortable

with change, and he liked his new spot.

Maybe that technique would work

with a spouse.

Rather than putting my paint

equipment and favorite stepladder away,

I set them just inside the doorway to the

back bedroom and left it there. We walk

by that room several times a day.

Then I set my extra can of paint in the

hallway for a few days.

I moved my favorite stepladder

spattered with every color of paint I’ve

ever used IN THE DOORWAY TO THE

BEDROOM.

Over breakfast one day, I made a

remark about the corner hardware store

discontinuing a certain paint and having

a closeout sale at $10 per gallon.

It was met with “That’s nice.”

A few days later I mentioned it was

quiet at the office and I thought I’d catch

up on a few things around the house.

Again, “That’s nice, dear.”

Later that afternoon, I was in the

kitchen making a cup of coffee or more

likely a happy-hour refreshing bever-

age. The garage door opened and the

first words I hear are “What are you

painting?!”

“Ummm, the back bedroom.” (LOW

“Why?!”

“Ummm, I had some paint leftover

from the back-foyer project that was left

over from the front hall and music room

project and decided the back bedroom

could use some attention.”

“Why?”

“Because it’s been at least 10 years

since it was painted.”

“We’ve had this discussion! It’s

important to change things up lest we

unwittingly get stuck in a home décor

time-warp and our home becomes an

unsellable laughingstock!”

“But I like the blue . . .”

“You’ll be fine.”

The crisp silver gray with white trim

looks up-to-date, yet perfectly appro-

priate in an ultra-traditional two-story

colonial.

It took another 2-3 day acclimation

process to foster the idea the bedroom

looked great with a rolled 9 foot-by-12-

foot area rug on gleaming wood floors.

Hopefully, we won’t have to step over

the rolled-up rug in the hallway for the

next 10 years like we did the baby gate.

Maybe I should set up my stepladder in

the garage next to my 8-year-old car.

Saturdays with Dave and SallyUnearthing Treasure in Barren County

BY DAvE KIRgAN

In our travels, we always promise to return with a copy of the magazine for the vendors and the venues that we profile. So one stormy Saturday in September, Sally and I made good on

that promise as we circled back through Cave City to deliver Bowling Green Home and Lifestyle.

Everywhere we stopped to share it with them, the owners were delighted. Some told us that relatives and customers had commented on our dispatches from the field. They loved see-ing their efforts through our eyes. All the hard work of sourc-ing and selling collectibles was really for people like Sally and me to come explore, appreciate, and hopefully find something

to take home. Leaving Cave City, it was an easy decision to head toward

Glasgow. Sally had already done her homework, so we had some good destinations in mind. Antique, consignment and thrift stores often come and go, so we are flexible when looking for them. Leaving Cave City on Highway 90, we traveled several miles, then turned right onto Highway 31E, and arrived in the town of Glasgow. After a couple more miles, we turned left onto Main Street.

Just before the square is the Art and Antiques Gallery, which we decided we would stop at on the way back through.

Continuing on Main for a couple of miles, after it passed under the Cum-berland Parkway, we arrived at our first stop.

The small home, turned vintage decor business, was on the left at 1534 Burkes-ville Road. The Hen House, owned and operated by Donna Richey, pays homage to our feathered friends, and not just roosters and hens. As we shopped the tidy store with well-displayed vignettes and lovely one-of-a-kind collectibles, happy parakeets serenaded us from the backroom. Naturally, the Hen House was the perfect place for Sally to score an antique birdcage to add to her collec-tion. Leaving the Hen House, but not before taking a photo of Richey and her granddaughters, we headed back toward town.

Our next destination was on the left, at 1425 Burkesville Road. Shabby Chic Antiques is a large store with lots of intrigue. There is everything from salvaged building products to a well-stocked selection of furniture and fur-niture paint. They promise to “fill your trunk with good junk” and to prove it; there are raw pieces ready for restora-tion and a new home.

on how to transform the furniture finds yourselves as well as a place to buy already finished pieces.

I was the one to find treasure this time; a recurve bow just like one I owned fifty years ago as a teenager.

Shabby Chic has a loft with several more booths, many of which had spe-cials like twenty to fifty percent off the marked prices. Sally found some fixtures for her craft studio. We were having a good time searching through the mer-chandise, but it was time to continue on our adventure.

We backtracked on Main to the Square, stopping along the way for a quick look in a few small stores. The Arts and Antiques Gallery is at 207 West Main, just off the Square in the old J.C. Penney building. This is an actual store, more like a furniture showroom con-verted to display antique items on one side and antique furniture and art on the other. Easily the largest inventory in Glasgow, the merchandise is carefully arranged, with plenty of room to move around between the booths. A collabora-tive effort by art lovers and the Museum Board, the gallery displays the work of local artists and allows vendors to set up booths and sell their wares. Part of the proceeds from every sale benefits the South Central Kentucky Cultural Center.

Returning to 31E, we turned left, head-ing out of town toward home and to find the last store Sally found in her online search. It was a couple of miles out on the left, but unfortunately it was closing its doors for good. We stopped, browsed around, and while we were safe inside, it rained with a fierce vengeance. The store was located at the bottom of a small hill, so we watched from inside as the park-ing lot flooded. When the rain finally let up, we waded out to load our SUV with the treasure Sally had found. This adventurous finale capped an especially exciting day of exploring.

Vowing to return, we headed west on the Cumberland Parkway back to Bowl-ing Green. There were some thrift stores, such as the Salvation Army and Good-will, that we didn't have the time for, but good news for us, Glasgow is well worth a second trip.

Bon Voyage

Predictions for a wild winter are not necessarily accu-rate. But as the days get colder, the prospect of driv-ing in bad weather makes it important to understand

the benefits of an all wheel drive ride. Front-wheel drive pulls. Four-wheel drive requires

manual override. All-wheel drive or AWD, means the vehicle itself, without any action required by the driver, can automatically toggle from tire to tire, to distribute the traction and avoid getting stuck; or worse.

For drivers, especially inexperienced drivers, it can be counter-intuitive to steer into a slide, but with AWD, the vehicle is programmed to recover without the risk of human error.

Gary Force Honda in Bowling Green offers several models with available AWD. The Pilot, the Ridgeline, and

an HR-V Crossover each have an AWD option. But sales manager Matt Jackson can cite the reasons why the 2018 all-wheel drive CR-V is one of his favorite vehicles.

And Jackson is not the only one who likes it. This fifth-generation compact SUV is fuel-efficient, gets

high-marks for safety, offers generous space in the cabin, and has more cargo room than other SUV’s in its class. The CR-V also has several package options that offer drivers everything from top to bottom—surround sound, to turbo-charge.

Jackson has been at the dealership for almost a decade. Before he joined the sales force, he served for years in the finance department helping buyers understand the terms of their loans. The combined experience makes him a good source for shoppers trying to calculate the cost and

benefits of the optional upgrades, as well as advising them on what to look for in year-end values and this is Jackson’s advice for anybody currently in the market for a winter-worthy ride:

Go test drive the CR-V’s. They are highly-regarded, and the 2018’s are priced to move.

He says an updated body style on the CR-V has some shoppers waiting for the 2019’s, so year-end savings on the 2018 models, combined with an offering of .9 percent interest for 60 months, are incentives too good to ignore.

Jackson also happens to drive a CR-V. Actually, he says it is his wife’s car and that after driving a base-model for two years, she traded and upgraded to a CR-V with AWD.

Personally, he says, he never really noticed a significant difference in the

performance. Even in a snowy park-ing lot that hadn’t yet been cleared, he says—both cars performed well.

Despite that observation, Jackson says when buying a winter-worthy vehicle, AWD is ultimately the better value. For a minimal increase in MSRP, buyers get a premium vehicle that holds its value.

South Central Kentucky’s relatively

mild winters, make front-wheel drive perfectly safe in a variety of conditions. But as Jackson points out, vehicles are meant to move. With friends and family in and around Detroit, Michigan he says, “I know a lot of people who live further north of here and they strongly recom-mend buying the vehicle with all-wheel drive.”

When buying a

winter-worthy vehicle,

AWD is ultimately the

better value.

Even die-hard fans who would never

consider owning anything except

a Toyota may not know this about

them:

When the founder’s son, Kichira

Toyoda traveled to the US in the 1930s,

he became enamored of those Dodge

Power Wagons made famous by gang-

sters during Prohibition. Back in Japan,

he enlisted help from his father to begin

production on what would become

the Toyota Model AA. But rather than

give his new company the family name,

Kichira christened it Toyota Motor Com-

pany, Ltd. By changing “da” to “ta” he

shortened the number of strokes in the

calligraphy from nine to eight—Appar-

ently Kichira wanted all the help he

could get and in East Asian culture, eight

is considered a lucky number.

Kichira must have done something

right, because that eight-stroke word

became a world-wide brand.

In Bowling Green, Sales Consultant

Cody Stumbo isn’t ruling out a little luck,

but knows the company’s success comes

from staying true to its roots of continu-

ally seeking efficiencies in everything

from supply chain, to engine perfor-

mance. Today, Toyotas continue to lead

the way when it comes to automotive

safety, and Stumbo says with the coming

winter weather, the Toyota Highlander

is a good choice. Bigger than the RAV4,

but smaller than the Sequoia, the High-

lander offers a happy medium. It rides

like a van but has the look of a sport

vehicle and comes with six-cylinders and

optional all-wheel drive.

What is not optional is the Toyota

Safety Sense—four standard features

that make Toyotas among the saf-

est vehicles on the road. Pre-collision

systems with pedestrian detection may

actually mean the difference between a

near miss and a tragic end. The lane-

departure alert warns of drift. Along

with automatic high beam and adaptive

cruise control, these features all come

standard on every Toyota vehicle.

Stumbo grabs the keys to a High-

lander, one of the many vehicles

equipped to handle the worst of winter

weather, to showcase the reasons he

believes he sells so many of them. He

begins by simply noting its size. “People

who don’t want the look of the van but

want the ride of the van—then the High-

lander is probably the best bet,” he says.

It has a bigger chassis, a wider base, and

offers six cylinders, while the more com-

pact RAV4 only comes in four cylinder.

Weathering Winter in Comfort and Style

This particular Highlander that

Stumbo has selected is the Limited and

one of its biggest selling points as winter

approaches is its all-wheel drive capabil-

ity. The Limited features a drivetrain that

will automatically adjust. The suspen-

sion will recognize and immediately

counter to recover from any slippage, he

explains.

But what really excites Stumbo about

this vehicle is its technology package.

No matter what the weather, SONOR

systems and back-up cameras help

keep passengers safe in the car. Stumbo

points to small sensors on the rear bum-

per that can detect and alert the driver

if the Highlander is getting too close to

an object.

If drivers want to upgrade to a High-

lander Limited Platinum package, they

can take it a step further. These models

have sensors in the rear, but also in

front. A display in the console shows the

terrain while a special alert sounds if

anything or anyone gets too close to the

vehicle.

It also has a blind-spot monitoring

system that flashes an icon on either

mirror to alert the driver to vehicles

entering the Highlanders blind spots.

Blind spot monitoring is built into every

Highlander, every Sienna, and every

RAV4.

But the bird’s-eye view is the real cat’s

meow and according to Stumbo, buyers

can’t get enough of it. “I just sold one last

week and that was one of the guy’s favor-

ite things about the car,” says Stumbo.

Picture a device mounted discreetly

on the roof that utilizes SONOR to

provide 360-degree ariel view of every-

thing around. Stumbo reiterates that the

bird’s-eye view is only available in the

Highlander Limited Platinum model,

which raises the question of how this

iconic company sets about educat-

ing their sales team so they can stay

abreast of all the new safety features and

options.

Stumbo credits the company with

thorough sales training but says he

learned firsthand about the perfor-

mance and safety features the same way

anybody else can: Just come in to Toyota

of Bowling Green and take a test drive.

A large combination great room and kitchen give this Modern Farmhouse a sense of grandeur. And by incorporating elements salvaged during demolition—wide planked Chestnut floors, as well as the rough-hewn wood mantle above the stack-stone fireplace, the Tabors were able to honor the homestead that stood on this site for more than 100 years.

BY MARy NESTOR I PHoToGRAPHY BY JOE IMEL

From Reclaimed Homestead to

High Performance Farmhouse

With today’s rapid-growth forestry

products and cookie cutter

blueprints, it is important to

remember that the family home is meant

to last for more than a single generation.

And this is definitely a place

where size does not matter. From the

Thanksgiving turkey, to holiday parties,

and ordinary occasions—even tiny

homes have unlimited space to hold new

memories.

But what happens when it really is

more appropriate to say goodbye to a

cherished homestead and embrace a

more livable, energy-efficient home?

After all, kitchens were not always in

the galley and grandpa never had to

contemplate the best place to mount

the flat screen, much less calculate the

merits of solar arrays or geothermal

heat.

Times change.

Which is exactly how in July of 2017,

Reda and Danny Tabor found themselves

facing the prospect of demolishing a

home that stood surrounded by rolling

hills and natural springs for several

generations. Built around the turn of the

century, and kept in the family since the

1920s, there were a lot of good memories

tied to “Mammy’s” house.

So much so that initially, the Tabors

had hoped to simply modify, renovate

and stay put. But their builder Tim

Graham of Design Builders, Inc.,

recognized the limitations of that

plan. Graham recalls, “Very early on

we realized it was not a salvageable

home so we decided to tear it down.”

Like it or not, sometimes starting from

the ground up is the only way to insure

success. So, step by step, Graham and

crew dismantled then finally bulldozed

Mammy’s house, as well as a barn that

was in the path of the new project.

Now, just over a year after breaking

ground, and fewer than four months

after moving in—the Tabors’ customized

Modern Farmhouse--is making

memories all its own. During the 2018

Parade of Homes in September, it won

the prestigious People’s Choice Award

along with Best Curb Appeal and Best of

Show, (Less than 3500 square feet).

Again, and again, Graham says he

heard comments about the beautiful

finishes and unique architectural details.

“People from the Parade walked in and

said ‘Wow, this is such a cool project’,”

he recalls. And while Graham is honored

to have received it, his favorite things

about the home were probably not what

prompted visitors to award the People’s

Choice.

That’s because he has a passion for

building science which puts a laser focus

on the things they don’t immediately

notice like the mechanics, the building

envelope, indoor air quality, and other

considerations which impact the home’s

livability and longevity.

Building science is an evolving set of

ABOVE Creative Wood Design in Russellville built the kitchen cabinets and Reda found the granite with its leather-like matte finish—while shopping in Nashville, Tennessee.

LEFT PAGE BOTTOM RIGHT The blueprint was modified to give Reda more space to showcase some of her favorite collectibles. Rustic elements like a bracket mounted sliding barn door give the finished home its unique character.

TOP LEFT When it came time to decorating, Reda Tabor was confident in her choices. Her modern farmhouse palette combines dramatic choices like royal blue in the dining room against more rustic details like glass-front cabinets, and exposed brick walls.

best practices.

For example, at the turn of the 20th century, building

science meant something as simple as cross-ventilation using

windows that could be opened for fresh cool air during the

“shoulder” months of spring and fall and then battened up

against the extremes of winter and summer. Building science

has come a long way since then.

For this project, Graham specified a state of the art

ventilation system, called an Energy Recovery Ventilator.

This ERV brings in fresh air—much like opening a window to

a cool breeze—except without impacting energy bills. In the

wintertime, this same ERV can serve to pre-condition and

circulate warmer air throughout. There is also a filtration

system that helps reduce the pollen count and insures a fresher

air exchange. And there are multiple thermostats that make the

rooms comfortable throughout all three levels of living space.

“Make no mistake about it,” says Graham. “This project

falls squarely into the category of a green home.” Even the

In shades of ivory, coral, and powder blue, the master suite is a sanctuary of natural light and comfortable spaces. The home is three stories including a walk-out basement that Reda is still decorating. With its generous square footage and plenty of extra bedrooms, she and husband Danny Tabor look forward to hosting their large family for holiday dinners and overnight visits.

surrounding natural springs were put

into service to supply water to all of the

outdoor faucets.

Part of its lighter carbon footprint

comes courtesy of having been built

with reclaimed building materials from

the original structures.

“Salvage anything you can,” had been

Reda’s directive when they realized the

original home and barn would have to

be removed to make way for their new

one. But even in their demise, both

structures continued to surprise and

inspire their efforts.

For example, upon stripping away

the weathered sheets of metal from the

exterior, the crew uncovered the original

shiplap cladding. Building science has

come a long way since shiplap was

the best way to divert moisture and

keep homes dry inside. Homesteaders

often covered the interior flat side

with tobacco cloth or burlap and later,

homemakers added wallpaper to create

what was essentially an early version of

“drywall.”

Graham used the old wood to create

a fresh look. He dismantled and finished

each board with a catalyzed stain so

that neither steam nor cooking oil

will penetrate the seal. They used the

restored wood across the entirety of

the backsplash where its weathered

white-washed patina perfectly contrasts

against the more modern elements of

the new open-concept kitchen.

But the real show-stopper is the

wide-planked chestnut hardwood

flooring used throughout the entire top

two levels of the Tabor home. It was only

during demolition, that Reda and Danny

discovered their barn was built using

this quintessential hardwood which has

become difficult to even find, much less

source.

TOP LEFT Because of its setting, it only made sense to include wide porches in front and back. The stone foundation gives way to Hardie Board siding while an eye-brow awning above the front door serves as a focal point for the façade.

MIDDLE Local artist Leeza Glisson finished the bench made from a door that the Tabors salvaged during demolition.

Page 31: The Tests of Time - TownNews...Imagine the possibilities Imagine the Convenience • Imagine the Beauty • Imagine the Luxury Tim Graham, President Your kitchen can be everything

There was a time when the American Chestnut dominated the landscape

from New England to the Mississippi and throughout the Ohio Valley. But soon

after the turn of the 20th Century, the accidental introduction of Asian Bark

Fungus quickly spread, infecting and killing 98 percent of the entire population

and bringing an end to its reign as the Redwood of the East Coast.

When they realized the good fortune to find the old-growth wood, Graham

enlisted Sullivan Hardwood Flooring on Old State Road in Scottsville to install

the kiln-dried chestnut boards. They used a two-step method that will insure

longevity. “You can’t just nail it down and go,” explains the builder. “Because it’s

wide-plank, you have to glue it down first. Otherwise it will cup,” he continues.

“The way it’s installed now—the floors could easily last 100 more years.”

Who knows? Maybe by then, building science will mean living in chambers

on the moon. But for now, this state-of-the-art family farmhouse offers plenty of

time and space to enjoy an infinite number of happy memories.

RIGHT TOP AND BOTTOM The home features three levels of living. There are 3,359 square feet divided between the top two levels above a 1,000-square foot walkout basement. From the front, it reads as a two-story, but in back, the dramatic view unfolds. Lee Brick and Block was the source of much of the stone, and Personal Touch Lawn & Pond did the landscaping.

BOTTOM RIGHT A barn-door style service garage only made sense given the rural heritage of this modern homestead.

On Sunday November 4, the clock

ticks back one hour. It’s Fall, 2018

and the commute just got slightly

more challenging.

Sure, an hour of extra sleep is a good

thing…until it isn’t.

Evidence suggests that the time

change associated with “falling back” as

Daylight Savings is suddenly switched

off, can wreak havoc on traffic. Acci-

dents increase because the same

travelers on their way home from work

are now all operating under slightly dif-

ferent conditions.

Naturally, in autumn, the daylight

wanes. But this abrupt loss of an hour is

a good time to slow down, stop texting.

Be especially careful of pedestrians. A

walking commute is always less safe, so

be aware.

November is also an ideal time to

prepare for bad weather.

It can be as simple as a warm hoodie

in a bright color, a dollar store rain

poncho, a working flashlight, and a

blanket. Tucked into a duffle, and stored

in the vehicle, these everyday items can

mean the difference between feeling safe

or feeling stranded if trouble does arise.

And absolutely carry even a compact

set of jumper cables. Not to many things

are less pleasant than to be stranded in

the cold with a lifeless battery, hood up,

and a fellow driver willing to help but

not a cable in sight. So stay safe and sane

by being prepared. Water, snacks and

dry socks aren’t that heavy either—so

take the reigns cowboys and girls and

saddle up.

Of course, if we were actually riding

horses, commuters wouldn’t need tires.

So if you don’t think there is enough life

left in your tread to last until April, now

is the time to buy. Dealers offer incen-

tives this time of year and again in the

spring so make the call.

If you have a penny in your pocket,

put it to use. Place Lincoln upside down

in the channels between the tread

blocks. If his forehead is covered, you’re

safe until spring. But if you can still see

his forehead, good old Abe has some bad

news—the tires are worn to 1/16th and

you’re going to need a lot more Lincolns.

And while you’re at it, check each

one for uneven wear, which means its

time to get professional help. Reputable

tire dealers offer free follow-up rotation

and balancing so go see them for expert

service after the sale. After all, if you’re

driving a car, and I’m guessing you are,

your tires are quite literally the rubber—

meeting the road.

Planning a trip to grandmother’s

house or even across town? Then it’s

time to “winterize,” open your eyes, and

be safe in your commute.

Where Have all the

Flowers Gone?

ELEMENTS

Staying on Top of a Foundation that Settles

If you feel like your home has begun to

settle, maybe it’s time for an annual

review. Stair-step cracks in the brick or

tile and windows or doors that won’t eas-

ily open are all signs of trouble.

When the foundation settles, or

moisture takes over, the damage will only

get worse, says Brittney Griffy of Frontier

Basement Systems.

Especially in Kentucky where karst

topography has formed fragile cavities

just below the surface, caves, sinkholes,

and underground waterways, can all

cause problems for the structures built

above them.

Frontier is locally owned and oper-

ated but they are also part of a larger

network, which gives them access to a

team of structural engineers as well as an

array of solutions to address structural

failure.

If the home is properly distributed on

load-bearing strata, settlement will not

occur, says Griffy. But for peace of mind,

she recommends that homeowners have

annual reviews of the structure.

At Frontier, inspections are free, but

the cost of ignoring the problem can be

enormous.

“Foundation and concrete problems

won’t go away or fix themselves,” Griffy

explains. They worsen over time and can

result in severe damage. So the sooner

these issues are addressed and perma-

nently fixed, the more economical the

solution and the less risk of danger or

injury.

An inspector should evaluate the

structure as well as the earth around it

to assess the situation and determine the

best option. Homeowners should feel

comfortable that they understand the

cost and benefit of the different options.

A qualified inspector should be able to

triage areas of concern and provide a

detailed solution.

Any settling affects how your home

functions, according to Griffy. She

says settling adds stress to the entire

structure. “Once movement starts it will

continue to get worse. How slowly or

quickly will depend on the soil the home

is built on.”

Correcting the problem may be as

simple as diverting or pumping away

water from under-ground spaces like

basements and crawlspaces.

But some problems are more com-

plex. In some cases, the home’s foun-

dation needs to be retrofit with “Push

Piers” which Griffy describes as brackets

to anchor the footing while hydraulics

force steel supports into the bedrock of

load bearing strata.

On the day of the actual retrofit,

Griffy warns, “There will be dust.” She

recommends that homeowners prepare

by putting covers over furniture and

moving personal items out of the way.

And just because your home is new,

doesn’t mean it can’t have issues, so

again it’s important to benchmark any

cracks or changes. Check with your

neighbors. Have other homes around

you had similar problems?

There is help for consumers on their

website, but Griffy says the best way to

get peace of mind is to contact Frontier

Basement Systems and schedule a free

inspection.

INSTRUCTIONS FROM THE DESIGNER

The architectural designer knows best how His design system should function. Therefore He is the best one to tell us

what and what not to do. Through His Word, God introduced us to the system of His design. He designed the human spirit

as one of the systems of the human being. To maintain and improve the health of the human spirit, God has chosen to

work through the system of His design.

The Lord reminded Joshua how obedience to His instructions would bring prosperity and success: “This book of the

law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do accord-

ing to all that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have success” (Joshua 1:8).

Jesus never sought to change the quality of one’s existence through prayer alone. Jesus sought to change the quality

of life by issuing a set of instructions. Even to Lazarus, who had been dead for four days, Jesus gave a set of instructions,

“Lazarus, come forth” (John 11:43). Had Lazarus dishonored the instructions, he would have remained dead. His quality of

life changed due to his willingness to honor the set of instructions that Jesus issued to him.

Prayer is a powerful tool. I continually use that God-authorized empowerment tool.

However, do not seek to alter your course in life by prayer alone. God seeks to improve

your life by giving you a set of instructions.

• The quality of the instructions that you follow helps to produce the quality of life you will enjoy.

• The instructions you follow today create the quality of life you will enjoy tomorrow.

• The instructions you massage into your mind today will determine how well you manage your life tomorrow.

• Only when you follow divine counsel do you enjoy maximum quality of health within your spirit.

Bankrupt instructions will lead to poverty. In the absence of quality instruc-

tions, quality of life never improves. How meticulously you follow the instruc-

tions is key to reaping great rewards. The quality of your following instructions

also helps to produce the quality of life that you will enjoy.

You are a system and your life functions by system. Therefore, whenever

your life is not functioning to bring the results you desire, adjust your

systems. Design out the problem. Design in the solution. Design out the

impediment. Design in the progress. Email your questions to [email protected]

viewpoint

Your question is one I encounter often. First, allow me to clarify a couple of terms for the benefit

of our readers. Green home building is a broad term that encompasses everything from water/moisture infiltration, to indoor air quality, to energy efficiency and most everything in between.

Within the green home building umbrella is energy efficiency and durability. Ultra energy efficient homes are sometimes referred to as high-performance homes due to their ability to produce remarkable comfort and low or no energy costs.

When you speak with a professionally trained green builder, they will

determine the aspects most important to you and construct your new home in a manner that produces the aspects you find most desirable. Additionally, they will prevent you from falling into pitfalls commonly associated with novice green building.

Admittedly some of the terms can appear confusing even to those who attempt to educate themselves by visiting some of the websites dedicated to green building. Unfortunately, after wading through a thicket of building science jargon, they sometimes come away more confused than when they started.

So how does one select a well-trained home builder who understands all

aspects of building science and has built certified green/high performance homes in the past? Here are some questions to ask as you interview prospective building professionals.

Questions for your designer or architect • What makes a home green? (A

designer who mentions things like keeping energy bills low is on the right track. A designer whose first answer is “choosing green materials” may not be the right fit for you.)

• What design elements contribute to energy savings? (Good answers include “airtightness, well designed walls and ceilings, and high efficiency HVAC systems that includes an Energy Recovery Ventilator)

We want to build our retirement home within the next year. We are looking for a high quality home with low maintenance costs and ultra-low ongoing utility costs and we continue

to read about “Green and High Performance” homes. High performance homes seem to have all the characteristics we desire, but how do we find a high performance home builder?

Tim,

Items to consider when hiring a builder• Choose a builder who understands

airtightness goals and specifications.• Choose a builder that performance

tests homes. One way builders report home performance is through a term called ACH (Air changes per hour)

• Choose a builder who understands thermal bridging and can help you design a home that optimizes high performance at the lowest cost.

Other items to avoid• Forced-air ductwork in unconditioned

space• Spray foam that does not meet

minimum code requirements (R-20 spray foam is not equivalent to R-38 fiberglass)

• Adhered veneer “manufactured stone” installed onto OSB wall sheathing (Two to Three rain screens are a must to prevent rapid decay from water infiltration.)As you maneuver through the

building professional process, remember that highly qualified and trained professionals are available in your area and are ready to assist you with your next building project. With the right building professionals by your side, your new green home will continue to pay you energy efficiency, health, and low maintenance dividends for many years to come.

Take time this fall to slow down and experience the pure delight of great-tasting food with family and

friends. Savoring the moment is at the heart

of Tuscan-inspired entertaining, where everyone has a seat at the table to enjoy simple and delicious dishes that boast authentic flavor and incorporate quality ingredients.

With a passion for the simplicity of Italian food and homemade Tuscan cooking, Italian-American chef Laura Vitale, host of “Laura in the Kitchen,” traveled to the small town of Lucca,

Italy, where she reconnected with a region rooted in heritage, experienced rich traditions and embraced “The Tuscan Way” in crafting her own unique takes on classic dishes.

“I’m incredibly inspired by the spirit of Tuscan cooking,” Vitale said. “It encour-ages you to get into the kitchen, embrace simple ingredients and cook something delicious for the ones you love.”

PREP TIME: 15 MINUTESCOOK TIME: 10 MINUTESSERVINGS: 41 cup Bertolli Rustic Cut Three Cheese with Aged Asiago, Romano & Parmesan Sauce1 prebaked pizza crust (12 inches)½ cup shredded fontina cheese 1 ounce prosciutto, thinly sliced2 cups arugula 1 tablespoon Parmesan cheese, grated1 tablespoon toasted pine nuts1 tablespoon Bertolli Extra Virgin Olive Oil1 tablespoon Bertolli Balsamic Vinegar of Modena

Heat oven to 450 F.Evenly spread sauce on crust then top with

fontina cheese. Bake 10 minutes, or until cheese is melted, and remove from oven.

Top with prosciutto. Arrange arugula in center of pizza then sprinkle with Parmesan cheese and pine nuts. Drizzle olive oil and vinegar over arugula and serve.

occasion, consider bringing Tuscany to your table with an ingredient such as Bertolli Rustic Cut pasta sauce as the centerpiece. Try Vitale’s classic Eggs in Purgatory or other recipes like Prosciutto and Arugula Rustica Pizza and traditional Ricotta Bruschetta.

Keep these tips from Bertolli in mind as you bring your lively Tuscan-themed table to life:• Rustic tableware fits well with the

tone of the season. Try achieving this look with quality table accents that appear slightly distressed, faded or weathered. Thrift stores can be a sur-prising place to scout out your latest Tuscan-inspired table finds.

• Mix and match different textures of woods that complement the look and feel of the rustic tableware. Accom-pany them with softer linens for a variety of pleasing table textures.

• Use bright, floral colors, if you wish, to give your table vibrant pops of color to stand out among the darker, more rustic tones.

Remember, homemade Tuscan cooking is about great company, a simple menu and making memories. Find more fall flavors and entertaining tips at Bertolli.com.

To make eggs: In large skillet with high sides over medium-high heat, add marinara sauce. Pour water into empty jar, swish it around to lift any sauce left in jar and pour it over sauce in skillet. Bring to low boil.

Using back of wooden spoon, make four small wells in sauce. Carefully crack eggs, one at a time, and drop each egg into a separate well in bubbling sauce. Sprinkle salt and pepper on each one, to taste; cover skillet with lid and cook 7-8 minutes, or until egg whites set.

When eggs are cooked to desired doneness, sprinkle with Parmesan cheese and chopped parsley.

To make bread: Char bread on bruschetta pan or indoor grill pan about 1 minute on each side until toasted. Once toasted, rub with clove of garlic on both sides then drizzle with olive oil.

Serve eggs with hunks of charred garlic bread.

Note: If using skillet larger than 12 inches, you can add eight eggs instead of

four for additional servings.
