Seniors Sam Gray and JakeCorser, along with junior ScottPorter, will be the leaders andthe strength of the Pirate basket-ball team this year.

Gray was second team All-League last year and rotated inhis football QB leadership posi-tion with Porter. Gray wasinjured during a defensive playand did not play during the mid-dle part of the season.

Joining this trio will besenior Devante Dickerson, atransfer from Tillamook.According to Steven Sherren, the head basketball coach,“Dickerson will help with hisathleticism and speed.” Dicker-son is also exciting to watch, and gave some sterling perfor-mances in football this year.

Joining this quartet will be ahost of players from last yearʼsJV squad – juniors Tyson Jacob-sen, Wyatt Drake, Bradley Win-sted, Jared Darby and MichaelMaizel. Rounding out the teamwill be sophomore Mike Nel-

son.Two other sophomores, Laird

Tuel and Wayne Moore, will“swing” between varsity and JV.

As a result of being “under-sized” for basketball – thetallest player being six feet threeinches – the team, according toSherren, will try to spreadacross the floor and use amotion offense and speed to getopen shots.

With his ability and speed onboth on defense and offense,Dickerson will certainly be aPirate force to reckon with.

As the new varsity playersgain experience with the speedof varsity play, there will beobvious improvement on thefloor.

With one of the largest ros-ters in years -- there are 10players on varsity and 15 on theJV squad -- the program is setto take off in 2A over the nextfew years. All the members ofthe JV squad are freshmen (six)and sophomores (nine).

Although the team lost itsopener to 3A Portland Adventist(PAA), there are several posi-

tive points:1. This is a disciplined team.

These young men have checkedtheir egos in the locker room. They pass the ball well and con-stantly look for the open man.

2. Porter and Gray will con-tinue to lead the team and prob-ably get more minutes per gamein the guard position. Thisshould bring some consistencyand stability to the offense.

3. Corser and Maizel willgive some needed muscle to theinside, as they demonstrated inthe seasonʼs opener.

4. Dickerson has speed, andalthough tried to do too much attimes in the PAA contest, he is aquick learner, a team player, andan asset to the program.

5. Having Tim Gienger as JVcoach will really help the team.He was a great basketball playerwhile at NKN, and continued toplay in menʼs leagues after col-lege. Heʼs a student of thegame.

6. The roster numbers showgreat promise for the future.Several of the sophomores onthe JV squad have a full year of

experience at the high schoollevel and will mature in thecourse of the season.

7. Although the varsity has

three outstanding seniors on thesquad, the remainder of the ros-ter is composed of underclass-men.

Those who missed the cheershow at the Pirates home foot-ball game against PortlandChristian missed a real treat.

Young ladies and a gentle-man from two elementaryschools strutted their stuffbefore the packed stadium.

The elementary students, 11from Garibaldi Grade Schooland nine from Nehalem Ele-mentary, performed under thedirection of Cheer coach Vir-ginia Cole and her high schoolcheer squad.

At Saturday clinics beforethe game, the “Little Pirates”worked some routines with thevarsity squad and performedthem at the game.

Mascot Petey Pirate joined inthe festivities at the game aswell as at the clinic.

The brainchild of Cole, mostof the organization and planningfor the show is done through the

senior project by one of the var-sity cheer members. This year itwas Captain Lauren Meiter.

Coleʼs idea is to build a basefor cheer, which is a recognizedathletic activity by OSAA andmany colleges.

In addition, the activity asenvisioned by Cole will help tobuild a sense of communitywithin the school district.

Assemblies were held at theelementary schools, and thePirate cheer squad picked themusic and decided on the danceroutines.

Some of the songs and rou-tines came from OutdoorSchool. Not only did the mostlyfreshmen girls love the event, but the youngsters from the ele-mentary schools clearly lovedgetting an opportunity to showoff with the “big kids.”

The Neah-Kah-Nie cheersquad is embarking this year ona program of competition cheer. There is a desire to have more“stunting.”

Those who have been tofootball games will be able toattest to the increased skill of

the cheer team and the fact thatthere is finally interest from themale side of the student body, adding to the opportunity toengage in serious stunting.

This summer, Cole took thesquad to a clinic at Forest Groveand has paired up with thatschool in working on competi-tion cheer.

Competitive cheer is a grow-ing activity. To say itʼs not asport is to ignore the trainingregime and physical ability nec-essary to be involved. The sametraining regime in dance rou-tines in the world of Broadwayand other venues such as theOlympics is no less than that ofany other sport.

OSSA recognizes cheerlead-ing competition as any otheractivity. It has rules, sanctionscompetitions, and has the statedivided into the same classifica-tions as any sport or activity, 6Athrough 3A/2A/1A. In addition, there are female teams andcoeducational teams. Thenational competition is fierceand the trophies are just asprized as those in football orbaseball. Usually, the nationalcheer competition is filmed andshown on one of the ESPNchannels.

Beyond the cheer squad,Cole has also established adance team at the high school. The 20-member team continuesto grow, entertains at basketballgames, and provides yet anotheractivity to encourage participa-tion in campus activities.

Cheer: The other NKN sport

Competitive cheer is agrowing activity. To say

it’s not a sport is to ignorethe training regime and

physical ability necessaryto be involved.

Head Coach Dan Kamererhas a bevy of wrestlers fromnewbies to state qualifiers fromlast year.

Leading a squad of 16 withevery weight class covered willbe two state qualifiers from lastyear: juniors Austin Cherry(160/171) and Ben Purcell(135), both of whom shouldprovide outstanding leadershipfor a veteran team.

Joining Cherry and Purcellwill be district placers seniorsCharlie Griffith (189), JacobGrelck (140/45) and Ben Lee(145/52). Including Cherry andPurcell, the junior class is wellendowed with district placersEli Culver (125), ChristianPanlilio (140/45), and JamesDotson (152/60). With fivewrestlers who are veterans plac-ers of district tournaments andstate experience, Kamererʼs“tough” job will be workingthese matmen at their bestweight class.

Additional veteran wrestlersfrom last year include freshmenLogan Romig (103) and MattClayton (103/112), both whohave had junior high wrestlingexperience, sophomore TrentChambers (215/285) and junior

Anthony Borjes (215).Team newbies include fresh-

man Rey Corrales (119), aswell as juniors Alex Kammer-er,(135/40), Jefferson Serrano(135/40) and Josue Perez (285).

“With all this experience, especially as district placers, this will be crucial at tourna-ments where wrestlers are seed-ed and not randomly drawn,”said Kamerer, who is assistedby John Longfellow.

Neah-Kah-Nie is in a newdistrict this year and at the 2Alevel. Among top teams alongwith the Pirates will be Vernon-ia, Central Linn and county rivalNestucca.

It will be more difficult to get

to state this year. Under the newformat decided by OSAA, onlyfirst- and second-place wrestlersat the district from each weightclass will be “ticketed” to state, with some third-placers tryingto get in through a “wrestleback.”

“Basically, during a districttournament, the wrestler whoearns third place and hasnʼtwrestled the second placer dur-ing the tournament, can chal-lenge the second placer in aʻwrestle back,̓ Kamererexplained. “If the third-placerbeats the second-placer in theʻwrestle back,̓ he earns the tripto state.”

Now, that should be exciting!

With the return of senior Eri-ca Lee to help Alexis Andersonin the low post, the LadyPirates, under the tutelage ofcoaches Corey Douma and KenAlcorn, are ready to play someserious basketball in the 2ANorthwest League.

Lee is one of the toughestplayers in the area and alwaysthe first to take a charge. Ander-son, a junior, is maturing as oneof the finest natural athletes theLady Pirates have had recently.

(Although itʼs Principal Heidi“The Buck Stops Here” Buck-master who still holds the girlsjavelin record at NKN.)

With senior Rachel Porter atpoint guard and Shelby Grelckat the other guard, the LadyPirates will have strength andexperience in the back court aswell as height and toughness inthe middle.

Senior Brianna Edginton willround out the starting five.

Junior Shelby Porter, backfrom an injury last year (alongwith Lee) will be the sixth Lady

Pirate off the bench. In additionto these players, sophomoresRachel OʼQuinn and CarleyParsons will be joined by fresh-men Dana Moore and KristinaBurdick to round out the varsitysquad. These last four will also“swing” between varsity and JV.

Grelckʼs credentials include a“dead-eye” from the three-pointrange. She also tied the recordfor one-game assists with AprilLee, who held the distinctionfrom 2005-06. Her back courtmate, Porter, is also a three-point expert, which helps keeptheir opponents from closingunder the basket. Porter holdsthe record in percentage (36.4)over the past five years forthree-point shots.

In the pre-league openeragainst 3A Portland Adventist(PAA), the girls were a bit over-whelmed with PAA̓ s shootingability, but Grelck, Porter,Anderson and Edginton allshowed their talents. Grelck hittwo treys and Porter was five-for-six at the charity stripe.Grelck, Rachel Porter and Edg-inton were the high-point ladieswith 12, 10 and 8 points respec-tively.

Shelby Porter showed whyshe is the “go-to” Lady Pirateoff the bench. She and her sistereach pulled in five rebounds andAnderson was high with six.Anderson also was the “stop-per” and had the most defensivestats (rebounds, steals andblocks). Unfortunately, Lee suf-fered a knee injury in the firstquarter and didnʼt see muchaction.

All told, there are 17 LadyPirates on the roster (varsity andJV) with seven freshmen, twosophomores and four juniors.

The discipline taught to theLady Pirates by Douma andAlcorn shows. The team exe-cutes well, doesnʼt panic, evadesthe trap play and plays like a

well-oiled machine. Anyonewho has watched Douma-ledteams since 2005 knows this:they never give up.

Douma said the team had avery good summer camp, play-ing more than 25 games. At theJoseph camp in July, they com-peted against some top 2A and1A teams and held their own.

Douma was particularly pleasedwith the performances of Leeand Shelby Porter, he said.

This year, the Lady Pirateswill play in the 2A NorthwestLeague.

“Portland Christian will bevery tough and Gaston has agood core coming back fromlast year,” Douma said. “Wehave the ability to be very com-petitive.”

In the format for state 2Abasketball this year, four teamswill make the playoffs from theNorthwest League. Each regular2A league will have one oppor-tunity to send four teams to theplayoffs within the four-yearblock of alignment.

The following year, anotherleague will have four playoffteams and the NorthwestLeague will have three. Thisholds true for the boys as wellas girls team.

Unlike volleyball, there willbe no western and eastern divi-sion. Each school will play theother two times.

Leo Club’s ‘little things’ make big impactBy KATHLEEN ELLYN

For the Citizen

Some 30 needy families inthe area will be getting a dou-ble-dose of Christmas cheer thisyear when members of theNeah-Kah-Nie High Leo Clubfinish packing up the Christmasgifts they will deliver.

The Leos also helped providethe contents of North CountyFood Bankʼs Christmas foodboxes that were part of a collab-orative effort to include goodprotein in the mix.

Thanks to an effort begun byBill and Peggy Campbell lastyear, cans of Coho salmondonated by the Waterhouse FallsHatchery, canned by TillamookBay Boat House, sporting labelsdesigned by Brad Gerards'graphics class, and packaged bythe Leos will be in those foodboxes.

“The Leos have packaged4,200 7.5 ounce cans and willbe finishing up another 2,000cans in the near future,” reportsLeos advisor Jim Cox.

Thatʼs a lot of goodwill, butitʼs just part of what the Leos do– and the students in the Leosdonʼt consider it a big deal. Thegood works they do are “littlethings,” according to BriannaEdington, the Leosʼ student

president. “Being a part of Leos pro-

vides a really great opportunityto get out and help people andbe involved with your school,”Edginton said. “I like it becausewe r̓e helping people at alltimes.”

The Leoʼs collaboration withthe Food Bank is historic: TheLeoʼs sponsor the Home for theHolidayʼs Bazaar at the highschool each year to raise moneyto purchase foods not donatedthrough their regular canned

food drives and to pay for theChristmas gifts; a list of Christ-mas gift requests is provided byNeah-Kah-Nie School Districtfamily resource manager FrediaTosch.

This year the Bazaar boastedapproximately 40 vendors andLeos collected $1,200 total inbooth fees. The homecomingweek coin drive also brought inover $1,000, which was splitbetween the Leos and studentcouncil.

Much of that money will beused to purchase new gifts forneedy families. The Neah-Kah-Nie honor society joined theLeos to pack and wrap thosegifts this week.

Another Leos project is theupcoming blood drive. Edgintonshrugs off the organizationalwork of that project and againemphasizes the little thingsmembers of the club enjoy pro-viding. “The things that we doare so small that we have a goodtime doing the little things –like holding peopleʼs handswhen they r̓e giving blood,” shesaid.

This is just the spirit theLionʼs Club hopes to foster inits junior organization – and theexample the Lions Club sets isnot lost on Edginton.

“Iʼd love to take the opportu-

nity to join Lions, later on,” shesaid.

Pirates dominate, and intimidate, in speech & debateBy KATHLEEN ELLYN

For the Citizen

Cross swords with the Neah-Kah-Nie Piratesʼ speech anddebate team at your peril. Theymay sail with a skeleton crew ofjust 12 to 15 active members, but the streamlined team knowshow to cut down the oppositionand come home with the trea-sure.

All nine of the members whowent to the October Sam Bar-low Invitational came homefinalists – and they were com-peting against schools with2,500 students, some fielding asmany as 60 debate students.

“Our kids have some highexpectations,” admitted coachRick Morton. “It was a nicestart. I donʼt think we did aswell at Clackamas HolidayEdge where we competedagainst 39 other teams – thelargest and best speech teams inthe state. We took nine competi-tors and four made it to finalist.”

Well, even a Pirate can havean off day, and the debate teamjust shakes off performances inwhich they fail to dominateteams four times their size.

“When I lose, I always cantake something away from theexperience,” said MarlianaIsbell, a team co-president (withKelsey Filosi).

“Everybody gets better everyweek,” Morton said. “We have

four more tourneys before dis-trict at which the team histori-cally does very well -- neverfinishing lower than 5th at the1A-4A level in the last 12years.”

One of those leaders is Isbell, who recently won travelingpapers to attend the Odd Fel-lows and Rebekahs UnitedNations Educational Pilgrimagefor Youth Conference. Her sub-ject for the winning speech wasthe viability of the current goalsand directions of the UnitedNations.

Intimidated? You ought to be. “For me, discovering speech

was discovering my passion,”Isbell said. “It allows me toexpress myself and discussissues that we don't cover in a

normal school day.”The Odd Fellows are

impressed and they r̓e sendingIsbell to New York, WashingtonD.C. and Ottawa, Canada nextJune. Itʼs a two-week all-expenses-paid trip.

Not surprisingly, Isbell isinterested in politics, economicsand law – she can clearly go inany direction her interests takeher with these skills.

“I use the skills that I learn inspeech and debate daily,” Isbellsaid. “Socially, speech gives mean advantage over most of thestudents at my school. I am ableto hold a conversation about anarray of topics, and catch refer-ences that most kids my agedon't.”

And then thereʼs the winning.

“When I win, it is the bestfeeling in the world,” Isbellsaid. “Being such a smallschool, it is always so amazingto see that we do so well againstschools that have huge teams. Ithink that the one-on-one atten-tion we get with the coaches isreally what helps us do well.”

That sort of recognitionwarms the cockles of a Piratecaptainʼs heart. Morton, who isfilling in for regular coach HollyLorincz, was a member of aspeech and debate team “threedecades ago. Those memoriesare hazy at best,” he said. Whathe had that was current was arecord of motivating a lot ofkids in sports, a history of writ-ing on the job, and a keen inter-est.

“I mentioned my love ofspeech and debate to JudyMarvis, student counselor at Til-lamook High, and her husbandBryan Marvis, advisor for theTillamook speech team, andthey referred me to NKN Highwhen the position came up,” he

Winter 2010 - 11 Pirate Pride - 11

By DICK DIAMONDFor the Citizen

Junior Shelby Porter andSenior Jerry Creasy led DanKamererʼs cross country team tosome outstanding times thisyear.

Porterʼs time of 22:27 for the5000 meters (5K) was a person-al best. Her teammate, sopho-more Willa Childress, ran 28:59foir yet another personal best.Porter was picked for the dis-trictʼs third team. This year, thedistrict was comprised of1A/2A/3A teams.

Jerry Creasy led the Pirateteam of seven runners at district. His time of 18:18 was his beston the course and a 10th-placefinish, earning him a spot on thedistrictʼs second team.

Creasy and Daniel Wood-ward are the only seniors on thePirate squad. Woodward, alongwith freshman Rey Corrales, sophomores Branson Laszlo andWayne Moore, and juniorsBen Purcell and AlexKammerer, all showedgreat improvementover the season.

For Corrales,Kammerer, Laszlo, and Woodward, per-sonal records (PR)were recorded for theyear, with most of thetimes under 23 minutes. With afew minutes shaved off here andthere, the boyʼs team could beheaded to state within the nextfew years.

Lady Pirate Volleyball was atreat. The young ladies battled

for first place in the westerndivision throughout the season. As always, they fought until thelast, when -- in the last game ofthe season, at home, in a packed

gym -- the opportunity toget to state was lost toNestucca. The Lady

Pirates just ran out offuel at the end. Another lossagainst an eastern-division rival

proved too much, and the Lady Pirateʼs

season was over. For Jacque “Jacs” Vanderco-

evering, the new head coach anda standout player while at Neah-Kah-Nie, it was a great year. She brought a sense of disci-pline and “old school” attitudeto the team and the kind of

teamwork that fans were treatedto showed her impact.

There were some very brightstars on the football team, but anumber of injuries brought anend to the hopes of new coachScott Ross and his assistants.

There were some electrifyingrunning performances fromjunior Scott Porter, who rotatedbetween running back and quar-ter back when Sam Gray gotinjured. Devante Dickerson alsohad some great moments in run-ning and receiving, and wasoutstanding on defense.

Sophomore Tanner Repasshad the most “touches” as run-ning back. His presence, along with Porterʼs and AustinCherryʼs, will be felt next yearin the backfield.

Senior Charlie Griffith,

juniors Anthony Borjes andJames Dotson and sophomoreZak Krumenaker were thenames constantly broadcast overthe PA system for their defen-sive stops, with Cherry, Repass,Porter and Dickerson makingplays at the corners and safety.

Finally, for the first time inyears, the Pirates had a kicker inthe person of Tanner Repass.Ross had been working withhim since August and, withRossʼ schooling and Repassʼstenacity, the effort paid off.

With three coaches in fouryears, each teaching a new sys-tem, the Pirates struggled thisseason.

The only win of the seasoncame in the last game, a home-coming contest against Vernon-ia.

Fall sports recap: Pirates gain valuable experience

said. Looks like the new coach

was a good fit. As Isbell recalls,“I will never forget our firsttournament of the year, the SamBarlow Invitational. We all wentin to it not knowing what toexpect, only having a few prac-

tices under our belts. But in theend, we came out with everysingle person a finalist, and allbut one placing. The bus ridehome we all sat in the back ofthe bus, and were full of energy.I feel like that bus ride we allbecame a lot closer, andchanged from just a random

group of people doing the sameactivity to a little family. I lovemy team and coaches, theymake me complete.”

Want to be part of the ener-gy? E-mail Morton at [email protected]. The teamʼs nextcompetition will be the PSUViking Invitational Jan 21-22.
