WOLBOER WOOL FARMER
Augustus/August 2015NWKV Nuusbrief 30 / NWGA Newsletter 30
The wool market steadied at the first sales of the season. The Cape Wools Merino Indicator remained largely unchanged, with a small decline of only 0,8% compared to the previous sale, to close at a value of R128,13 (clean). On the Australian market, the indicator shed 1,8%. The Cape Wools All-Wool Indicator also shed 0,8%.
Local traders attributed the steady market performance to the small amount of wool on offer and to the continued healthy demand for good-quality wool. There were good enquiries from India, albeit at lower price points applicable to lesser-quality wool.
The offering comprised 6 200 bales of which 97% was sold. The next sale is scheduled for 2 September when approximately 8 800 bales will be on offer.
Next week, the fourth Eastern Cape Communal Wool Growers’ Association congress takes place at the Nosimo shearing shed near Stutterheim. The true potential of this sector is, however, not yet realised and the focus will be on how to improve efficiency and make more from wool production.

Exceptional quality of communal animals 2Approximately 110 people attended the Interregional Flock Show at Tsolo College on 30 July 2015. Abrie Aucamp, NWGA independent ram selector, and Henri Naude, BKB field officer, were the judges. John Miller and Duncan Currie, members of the Group Breeding Scheme, commented positively on the quality of animals that participated in the competition.
The deputy principal of the college, WA Mbovu, gave some background information about the Tsolo Agriculture College and its achievements since 1904. Dr Tina Rust from the DRDAR, Robert Scott from BKB, Casper Labuschagne, vicechairman of the NWGA,
SK Makinana, vicechairman of NWGA Communal and HB van der Walt, vicechairman of the NWGA Eastern Cape also attended.
Napoleon Lehlohla was the overall winner and winner in the twotooth category, and fourth in the lamb category. According to XL Nyamela, NWGA production advisor, Lehlohla had the most entries in the competition and is an active member of the Bethania shearing shed. He also owns land on top of the mountains in Mount Fletcher.

Free wool craft demonstrations3
Communal farmers seek radical change 4
Visit the Wool Shed at Agri Mega and learn to crochet and apply different techniques to felt. These free wool craft demonstrations will be presented by Carle, Karen and Mignon at BKB’s Wool Shed (Venue G) at Agri Mega, Bredasdorp from 16 to 19 September. The NWGA, under the guidance of Izak Klopper, will be responsible for three daily sheepshearing demonstrations, which normally attract thousands of visitors. Support our growers and buy SA Merino wool yarn and products at Agri Mega.
The fourth Eastern Cape Communal Wool Growers’ Association congress takes place on 3 September 2015 at the Nosimo shearing shed near Stutterheim. This congress is a national event and one of the highlights on the calendar of commu
nal farmers. The theme is Utshintsho olumandla ku Phuhliso Mfuyo, which means “radical change in the development of livestock”. The congress will focus on the latest
developments and trends with special attention to quantity, quality and efficiency from subsistence or emerging to commercial farming. Genetic improvement, infrastructure, land
reform and wool and stock theft are the four pertinent issues in communal farming and will be discussed at the congress.

During the opening wool sale in Port Elizabeth, Bonita Francis spoke to wool buyer Mark Wright from Standard Wool about the quality of wool presented at the first auction and what excites him about the coming wool season. “The quality of the wool was excellent, probably the best in the past seasons,” he said. The lengths of the wool were not as long as normal, but this is because of the change in shearing pattern from 12 to eight months.
Regarding the forecast for the coming wool season, he said prices are going up, which is great for farmers. However, there are concerns as Chinese clients are not following the market. The general pressure on the market seems to be coming from India.
