Orwell diagnosed correctly that Wodehouse was ‘fixated’ on Dulwich. Seven of his earliest books were set in a scarcely modified Dulwich College, as were the thirty-six stories in Edwardian boys’ magazines. They restore to us a lost world of rich comedy, wit and wisdom about schools and growing up, conceived out of love for his old school. These refreshing works, sophisticated and ironic, are prototypes of the Master’s mature fiction, precociously and unmistakably Wodehouse. The book includes copious material from the Dulwich College Archives, as well as over twenty original illustrations from the school novels and tales. Dr Jan Piggott, FSA, author of this study, was formerly Head of English and Keeper of the Archives at Dulwich College. He shows how Wodehouse, between 1902 and 1911, by youthful alchemy transformed the primary material of his late Victorian experience at a great new public school into a fascinating body of fiction, now almost neglected in the shade of his more popular books. P.G. Wodehouse was at Dulwich College from 1894 to 1900. Wodehouse exclaimed to a Dulwich friend, fifty years after he left: ‘to me the years between 1896 and 1900 seem so like Heaven that I feel that everything since has been an anti-climax’. T.M.R. THE DULWICH COLLEGE QUATERCENTENARY SERIES To celebrate its quatercentenary the College is publishing a series of books concerned with, and inspired by, Alleynians. The first in the series – Wodehouse’s School Days by Dr Jan Piggott – is now available. Between now and 2019 the following books will be published: Dulwich Poets since 1960 by Ian Brinton This is a critical history of the extraordinarily influential range of poetry which developed at the College in the post- war period. Alleynian Minds edited by Neil Croally The College has a fine record of producing intellectuals in a wide range of disciplines. This book will provide biographies and bibliographies of some of those intellectuals, as well as including samples of some of the finest writing produced by Alleynian minds. The Dulwich Experiment During the post-war period the College was transformed by the now famous Dulwich Experiment. This book will trace the development and successes of the experiment. Raymond Chandler This book will contain a variety of essays from a range of scholars.

The school novels and tales included his first published book, The Pothunters (1902), and the more ambitious Mike (1909), rated by George Orwell as one of the best school stories in English.

The book includes copious material from the Dulwich College

Archives, as well as over twenty original illustrations from the school novels and tales.
