COURSE DESCRIPTIONThis course introduces students to world literature through the study of its traditions, techniques, and

genres. It emphasizes instruction in the writing process through which students produce numerous essays

dealing with literature and other topics. Students will respond to literature in writing and will demonstrate

the fundamental skills of oral communication. Vocabulary development builds on the program started at the

freshman level. The course also incorporates a study of humanities as a means of investigating world

literature. This course fulfills the English requirement for grade 10.

iPAD POLICY

Our class is a part of an iPad pilot in District 214! Through this initiative, you will truly hone your 21st century learning

skills vital to your success in both college and career pathways. In plain English, you will learn both English content andtechnology skills. We will attempt to do most things online through our iPads. With this opportunity, comes some new

responsibilities. Please make sure to read these requirements carefully, and be sure you follow these rules! We will be

on a three strikes and you are out policy for level one and level two violations. Level three violations will result in

natural consequences.

LEVEL ONE EXPECTATIONS:

If you have three level-one rule violations within a quarter, you will lose your ability to remove the iPad from th

room for the remainder of the quarter. You will check your iPad out with me during class time. It will be on yo

to find a work around for class assignments as all of our work will be done on the iPad. A work around would b

coming in during your lunch on a Purple Day, coming in during seminar, or coming in before or after school to

complete course work.

1.1 You MUST come to class with your iPad charged and with you every day.

1.2 If allowed by your other teachers, you may use your iPad in their classes. If you are off-task (playing games, on

social networks, goofing off in general) in these classes, you will receive a strike. Three strikes in any of your

classes will result in being out. (If you goof off in all of your purple classes on a dayyou are out.)

LEVEL TWO EXPECTATIONS:

If you have three level-two violations within a quarter, you will lose your iPad entirely for the remainder of the

quarter. That means that you will not even have access to your device during our class time. It will be on you

to complete all in-class work as homework for the quarter.

During each of these units we will focus on both content and skills. You should be prepared to annotateand/or keep a variety of notations as you read. There will be extensive reading and analytical writing in this

class. It is imperative that you complete all assignments on time. You will be penalized for late work.

A FEW WORDS ABOUT PLAGIARISM

Dont do it. Students who copy material for assignments, presentations, or papers without properly citing thesource will fail the assignment. In addition to failing the assignment, you will face the consequences of the

schools plagiarism policy. Please make sure you are familiar with the schools policy about plagiarism.

2.1 You are to be on task in class. If we are reading a passage in our books, you should not be gaming or social

networking. If you are off task, you will receive a strike. Three strikes and you are out.

2.2 If you violate our districts Acceptable Use Policy, you will receive a strike. You need to familiarize yourself with

our district policy.

LEVEL THREE EXPECTATIONS

With great rewards come great responsibilities. District 214 is providing you with over $500 of FREE*

technology. It is your responsibility to secure this investment. If you break it, you bought it. If you lose it, you

bought it. Ifit is stolen, youbought it. Therefore

3.1 Make sure you purchase insurance for your device. Information will follow on how to do this. $25.00 and a

deductible is WAY less expensive than having to repurchase an iPad.

3.1 Be careful with the device and be sure to secure it at all times. DO NOT leave this device in your gym locker.

Lock it in your own personal locker and ensure that you do not share your combination with anybody else.

3.2 At all times your iPad should be the first thing taken out of your backpack and the last thing taken out of your

backpack.

3.3 Do not loan your iPad to other students. This is your device, not your friends device. You are ultimately

responsible for it.

***FREE device and keyboard for use at home and school throughout the 2012-13 school year. You must purchase

insurance and the novels we will use in class. What you save on actual book prices will cover most of the insurance cos

as digital books are cheaper than paper copies.***

YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR:

o Academic IntegrityThe Rolling Meadows High School/ District 214 Academic Integrity Policy will be strictly enforced

Cheating or plagiarizing will result in a zero for the assignment. Make sure to dooriginal work on all your assignments because the repercussions will have a negative effect

on your grade.

o Attendance & TardinessI value our time together, so I expect you to come to class every day prepared. You are late if yo

are not in your seat, with materials, and ready to learn when the bell rings. If you arrive to class

without your materials, you will be sent to your locker and will need to either take a tardy or us

one of your semester hall passes. When entering the classroom late, please be courteous and

enter quietly and quickly in order to avoid disturbing the class. Ten minutes is more than enoug

time to get what you need from your locker, make your way around the building, and sit in your

desk in this class.

o ParticipationCome to class ready to participate. Discussion is an integral component of an English classroom.

Realize that participation includes both contributing your thoughts and opinions to class

discussions by asking and answering questions, and responding to your peers comments.

HOMEWORK / GRADE EXPECTATIONS:

Part of the learning process involved with high school is figuring out how to manage your time and figuring

out how to advocate for yourself. Both of these skills are important for your future. Therefore, it is up to you

to see me in a timely manner in regard to concerns about class work, absent work, what we are reading, your

grade, etc. Timely means that you see me with questions about homework before the assignment is due or

immediately after returning from an absence. Please be aware that I generally will not discuss grades during

class time. I do care very much about your success but am not able to halt what we are doing in class to

discuss grades, late assignments, or the like. It is up to you to see me outside of class time. I am 100% on

your side and am here to help you. If you are stressed about the workload, come in and see me. We can

work out a system to help you manage the work. If you are confused about your homework, come ask meabout it. I really respect students who do so.

GRADING POLICY

The following grade ranges have been adopted for this course.A: 89.5 100

B: 79.5 89.4

C: 69.5 - 79.4

D: 59.5 69.4

F: 59.4 and below

o Grades are usually updated on Sundays for minor assignments. Major assignments areentered no later than one month after their due date. There may be weeks when there are

no grades to put in.

o Assignments that are not turned in on time will be entered as NHI (not handed in), MIS(missing), or ABS (absent) until the student resolves the grade. These grades are weighted as

zero in Home Logic.o Students are to keep every assignment that is returned to them as it is their proof that the

work was done and to use as study aids for summative assessments. This work MUST be kept

organized in folders on their iPads.

o If a student is caught with copied workwhether they were the copier or the person whoallowed the copyingthey will receive no credit for the assignment.

o Students may be asked to redo work in order to receive more credit or may be required tocomplete formative assessments before being allowed to retry a summative assessment. This is a

opportunity, not a punishment.

o EXTRA CREDIT IS NOT OFFERED.** HABITS OF WORK = Coming to class prepared to learn every day with your OWN supplies, class materials

iPad, and the like. Participation and completion of assignments in a timely manner are also a part of thisgrade.

o Following school and classroom policies, which are detailed in your student handbook.

Noting and respecting that electronic devices including, but not limited to cell phones, CD

players, MP3 players, pagers, DVD players, headphones, TVs, hair dryers, microwave ovens,

etc., etc. etc. are not allowed.

o Checking Home Logic regularly

o Being responsible with your iPad

o Keeping a positive outlook

LATE WORK POLICY

Students are expected to be responsible and complete their work on time. Based on circumstances (i.e

extended illness) make-up work will receive full credit. Late work, on the other hand, may be accepted

for reduced or partial credit within the time frame of a given unit. More credit will be awarded to late

assignments completed in the ARC (Academic Resource Center) or during Saturday Success Academy. I

you are not in class, it is a YOUR responsibility to see the teacher for any work missed during an excused

absence. Work will not be accepted for credit for any unexcused absence. An unexcused absencewould be a class cut, unauthorized absence, or suspension.

ALTERNATIVE ASSIGNMENTS

If you have any objection to a specific reading or media, please contact your students teacher so an

alternative assignment can be arranged.

MISSED QUIZZES OR TESTS

Must be made up within TWO WEEKS TIME before school, during advisory, or after school. It is your

responsibility to make arrangements to make up this work.

PASSES OUT OF CLASS

As class time is valuable, students will be allowed only THREE passes out of class per semester. These may beused either as a locker or a washroom passes. Once the passes are gone, students will not be allowed to leave

without consequences. Please plan accordingly for this policy.

DISTRICT 214 INSTRUCTIONAL GOALS

o Each No Child Left Behind sub-group's average Education Planning and Assessment Systemgrowth will surpass that of the previous cohort by 10% annually in reading, English, math, and

science until growth from EXPLORE to ACT exceeds six points.

o Increase student success rate (as measured by a grade of A, B, or C) per course by at leastfive percentile points each year until the threshold of 95% is attained.

o The number of students enrolled in at least one AP course will increase over the previous year,as will the number of students taking at least one AP exam and the number of students earning

a passing score on an AP exam, until at least 50% of all students have earned a score of three

or higher on an AP final.
