Navigating Writing Skills Remediation

Students take the Writing diagnostic by selecting Writing Path Builder (this is already complete in your demo.) The diagnostic will inform the personalized Learning Path where students will work to mastery on any skills they did not demonstrate proficiency. Click on the Learning Path.

Based on the Path Builder results, each student is presented with a personalized Learning Path that targets and accelerates remediation mapped individual needs. Here you see all of the modules needed for mastery. A indicates that the topic has been mastered. A indicates more work is required. Select a module to explore.

Learning Path

Each module includes a Skills Check. A second, more discrete diagnostic that allows student a second opportunity to demonstrate mastery on the topics included in the particular module. This additional assessment helps student move more quickly through the topics and further focus on areas where they need the most help. Take a skills check or preview the activities associated with a topic in your learning path.

Once critical comprehension is mastered through Recall and Apply, students are ready to Write. Here, they transfer their comprehension into actual writing. Write exercises prompt students to demonstrate their ability to write correctly, using the topic’s skill. Each writing topic has a list of 10-15 writing prompts from which the students may choose. (Teachers have the flexibility to hide prompts or add their own.) The submission is sent to the teacher for grading and student’s can access a model response after they have completed the assignment.

After successful completion of the topic activities, students take a post test to demonstrate mastery and they are ready move on to the next topic.

The third module is Writing Practice. This offers a number of pre-set writing prompts on a variety of topics for student to practice crafting effective essays. As with all content in MyWritingLab, these activities can be assigned for specific due dates, removed or re-sequenced.

Writing Practice

When students submit their essay, they receive instant feedback based on six traits of writing: Ideas, Organization, Conventions, Sentence Fluency, Word Choice, and Voice. They can drill down to the Writing Advisor for more discrete feedback for each trait and find links to additional instruction, practice, and concept modeling. Each prompt allows for 3 draft submissions.
