fired up over a hold. It was cool to get swept back up in that and be reminded of what a blessing that really is. That crystallized it for me. I loved being around kids and watching their dreams come true. It was so rewarding. I thought, ‘I want to be a publisher.’” Million Dollar Baby: Wiseman took a leap of faith – and a very large withdrawal – to open publishing company Big Loud Shirt Industries in the fall of 2003. “I literally took a million dollars out of my bank account and put it into a business check-ing account,” he recalls. “I could have played it simple and sold my catalog a few more times and been set for life. I was in my mid-30s and was like, ‘What am I going to do – just sit around and put money in the bank and that’s it?’ I would’ve felt like an asshole. I got all of this through music; it seemed like I should be doing something with it.” Songwriters signed to BLSI in its early days included Chris Tompkins (Carrie Underwood’s “Before He Cheats”) and Rodney Clawson (Blake Shelton’s “Sure Be Cool If You Did”). “By 2012, with Rodney and Chris doing well, that’s when we thought, ‘Wow man, this thing is really hitting,” he says. “We had seven or eight No. 1s that year and 25 singles. And we’d [signed a management deal with] Florida Georgia Line. Everything was really starting to come together.” Creative Control: Wiseman admits the company’s success didn’t happen without a few learning curve moments, including parting ways with some business-oriented employees. “From that point forward, the inmates were going to run the asylum. Only the creative people [were] going to be in this building, period. “I literally fired everybody, looked at this intern kid [now-part-ner Seth England] and said, ‘Alright man, me and you – let’s go do this.’ He had great ears and a great work ethic. If you have great creative people who work hard and they’re smart, you can make enough money to survive the mistakes and learn from them. And the inmates have been running the asylum ever since.” Brand Name: Fourteen years later, the company has expand-ed into production, management, and a record label, Big Loud Records, which celebrated its two-year anniversary earlier this summer. What’s next? The re-branding, which becomes official tomorrow (8/1). “We started off as Big Loud Shirt,” explains Wise-man. “Then we had Big Loud Productions and Big Loud Mountain – but everybody was just calling us Big Loud anyway. And there are still those entities within that. But we decided it’s all just ‘Big Loud.’ [The rebrand includes all emails changing to @BigLoud.com and a new website.] “This doesn’t change anything as far as staff and what we’re doing,” he adds. “The record label is doing so great with [Pres.]

Black River’s Jacob Davis discusses his most influential music:1. John Anderson, Municipal Auditorium, Shreveport: It was the first concert I ever saw. I remember we were sitting on the first or second row. I love that song “Seminole Wind.” 2. Eric Church, Varsity Theatre, Baton Rouge: I saw him when I was in college at LSU. I looked at him onstage and told my

buddy who went with me, “I have to figure out how to do that. For the rest of my life, I want to play music.”3. Garth Brooks, Calgary, Alberta: There’s a reason he is one of the greatest entertainers of all time. It was one of the best shows I’ve ever seen.4. The Avett Brothers: I saw them at this little theatre in Baton Rouge. There were probably 300 people in the room. One of the brothers was playing guitar and a kick drum with his foot, and the other was playing a banjo and a high-hat cymbal with his foot. They had us all captivated. 5. James Taylor, Bridgestone Arena, Nashville: To see somebody who’s getting older and still be able to play guitar like that ... I was blown away. His voice still sounded great. He was funny. I sang every word to every song.• Highly regarded music you’ve actually never heard: Big Star. There was a Netflix documentary about them, and some of my co-writers were talking about this band. But I couldn’t tell you one song of theirs.• “Important” music you just don’t get: I’m probably going to get crucified within the music community for this. I totally respect him, but I never was drawn to Bruce Springsteen. I’m reading his book right now, though. I told one of my radio reps I didn’t “get” Springsteen and they got me the book and told me to read it.• An album you listened to incessantly: James Taylor’s Greatest Hits.• An obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: John Mayer’s “In The Blood.” It’s inspirational.• Music you’d rather not admit to enjoying: My band gives me a hard time because I love the Iggy Azalea song “Fancy.”

Michael David Hall of Columbia's Levon puts an industry spin on the artist interview: We were in our shaky van on the way back to Nashville after a show the first time we heard "Ms. Marianne" on the radio. It was on SiriusXM's The Highway. I had dreamed about this moment my whole life. We had a big celebration in the van. One of the highlights of our radio tour was visiting KRTY/San Jose and playing at

Club Rodeo. The radio station gave us a bottle of hot sauce to sign. If we get a No. 1 they're going to send us the bottle. It's our goal to get that hot sauce back in the mail. We always get Lay's potato chips at truck stops because it's good for our vocal cords. We keep bags of them in our guitar cases. Halfway through a set if your throat is getting sore or dry, you just eat some chips onstage. We're heavily influenced by '70s California country like the Eagles and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. And we hope to be half as good as them one day. My last impulse buy was at a gas station in west Tennessee. I decided our van needed one of those dream catchers to hang in the back window. I found one for three dollars. It was like the cherry on the sundae for the van. I wish I had written CSN&Y's "Carry On." I have never listened to that song and not gotten the chills. They do an unbelievable a cappella chorus. When I heard that song as a kid, I said, "I want to be in a band one day that sings together just like this." And now it's happening. Southwest drink tickets are incredibly important in this band. They go like hotcakes. We fly very early and very late. Nothing helps you travel like a nice cocktail. I'd love to be stuck in Phelps, WI. My family has a cabin up there in the woods. It's paradise to me. That's where I do my fishing, swimming, wakeboarding, and golfing with my parents. My least favorite interview question is, "Do you know you look like Thor?" I get it twice a week. Normally I respond, "No, I've never heard that," because it makes it go away faster. They're like, "You're the country Thor!" No, I'm not. I'm the scrawny stepchild of Thor that never picked up the hammer.

OFF THE RECORD: LEvON’S MICHAEL DAvID HALL

Levon’s Michael David Hall

Clay Hunnicutt and [Natl. Dir./Promotion] Stacey Blythe and everybody over there. It could not be better. It was, ‘Let’s do this re-branding now, because things are really starting to take off. We’ll be busier a year from now, so we should just do this now.’” Gently Down The Stream: Looking at the broader land-scape, Wiseman acknowledges the current legislative struggles songwriters are facing. “Right now we’re having setback after set-back,” he says. “We’re trying to make some headway on stream-ing, but there are some billion dollar companies out there that have some sway. It’s definitely a moving target. But in general, I’m totally fired up. The thing I love the most is, streaming doesn’t acknowledge genres anymore. They just call it ‘moods.’ Are you in a party mood or a chill mood? There are less and less people concerned about genre. Our record label has country acts, but we also have some very non-country acts that we’re going to be breaking. I want to be the North American label that is breaking multi-genre acts. Nobody is doing it – and we will do it.” Take Me Home, Country Roads: The Nashville Songwriter Hall of Famer still has his eye on the country prize, though. Wise-man says he’s “back in the trenches and meeting with program di-rectors, flying all over the country. It has been good to refresh those relationships and appreciate what they do. We’re all in a position where we could wake up tomorrow morning, read some headlines and either go, ‘Hell yeah!’ or ‘Oh, shit.’ So anybody who’s in there slugging it out, I really appreciate. I couldn’t be happier about the company, our team and my partners.” –Wendy Newcomer

Chart Chat Congrats to Keith Urban, Carrie Underwood, Royce Risser, Bobby Young, David Friedman and the Capitol promotion staff, who narrow-ly – tie-breaker narrowly – edged out Billy Currington, Royce Risser, Damon Moberly, David Friedman and the Mer-cury promo crew, to take the No. 1 spot with “The Fighter.” The first chart-topping points tie in Country Aircheck history re-sorted to the tie breakers which are, in order, plus-or-minus points, spins and plus-or-minus spins. “The Fighter” is the fifth-consecutive No. 1 from Ripcord. Songwriters are Urban and Busbee. And kudos to George Briner and the Valory crew on notch-ing 83 adds for Thomas Rhett’s “Unforgettable,” topping this week’s board.

Weekly promotion conference calls are also a source of mem-ories. “We had just gotten a No. 1 and we were all feeling pretty good about ourselves,” he says of one instance. “But they started the call with the song that was struggling.” He also got admon-ished with the classic “the 11 o’clock news starts at 11 o’clock” when he was late for a call. “I worked at two labels after that and I was never late for a call again.” And then there was the time he flew in for team meetings. “Our boss said, ‘Dan, you’re over budget. Matt, you’re over budget. Pleshe, you’re spending VP money out there.’ I kind of took that as a badge of honor.” Program Addicts: Returning to broadcasting, the biggest difference in Pleshe’s approach is a direct result of the decade he spent working for record companies. “I’d like to think I have a lot more respect for the label people,” he says. “The labels are paying money, the artists are giving their time and the reps would prob-ably rather be at home.” To that end, hotels, snacks backstage, sound and car service are now firmly on his radar. “These people are road warriors,” Pleshe continues. “I know we’re a only a blip, but we need to try to make them comfortable while they are here.” As to the “blip” remark, he recounts, “When

I was working with Chris Young at RCA, he didn’t even remember playing a show for our station two years earlier.” Seeing “both sides” doesn’t just apply to labels and radio, but also to having multiple mentors with different programming philos-ophies. Dave Taylor programmed KSKS when Pleshe first joined the station. Ken Boesen was next and promoted Pleshe to MD before departing for KWJJ/Portland in 2000 and being replaced by Mike Peterson. “With Ken, we’d look at charts and research to make music decisions, very analytical,” Pleshe says. “On the other hand, I remember saying to Mike one time, ‘Hey I kind of like that Pat Green/Radney Foster ‘Texas In 1880.’ And he said, ‘Add it.’” Pleshe rose to PD with Peterson’s departure to WUSN/Chicago in 2004. Another change: Station ownership from Peak to Cumulus. “Our owner Todd Lawley was two floors down,” Pleshe recalls. “When the ratings came out, he was in my office. Now if I need to bounce stuff off someone, I’ll call [Cumulus VP/Country] Charlie Cook.” Pleshe’s passion for radio never waned, but being home and spending more time with his three children cinched the decision that brought him back to broadcasting. “I missed all three of their birthdays while I was on the road last year,” says Pleshe. “I’ve basically been traveling for as long as my 12-year-old can remember.” Minor league baseball games and trips to Dave & Busters are back. “You know the old adage about people on their deathbed,” he says. “The label rep version is, no one ever says, ‘I wish I would’ve spent more time on the road.’” Reach Pleshe here. –Paul Williams
