M o n d a y, M a rch 17 T H 2003 29W i re less Dail y News

Right now, Europe and much of Asia, including China, are ahead of Nort hAmerica in recognizing the potential andin implementing LBS to a broad audi-ence. In North America, carriers havebeen understandably slower to make pre-cise positioning a fundamental proposi-tion in their premium service offeringsdue to their focus on mandatory E911deployments. But with help from us, theyare moving toward a higher-ROI simulta-neous-service model now.

WDN: What kinds of services are leadingthis move?

RL: Various tiers of service can be imple-mented now. At the lower end, basic con-s u m e r-oriented capabilities like Fr i e n dFinder are proven. There are also moreadvanced fast-update solutions such aspersonal navigation coming in at the high-er end of the service model.

These upper- t i e r, high-update rate serv-ices can incorporate maps and pic-t ograms capable of resolving to a ve ry

f ine scale, thanks to the powerful MMSp l a t f o rms now being deployed by carr i-ers. T h ey enable the advanced ve h i c l en av i gation systems and similar serv i c e sn ow active ly sought by consumers, aprocess that emerged first in Japan andthen in some European locations and isn ow migrating to North A m e r i c a .

One system now being tested in Swedenprovides an exciting example of what iscoming: it allows basic location trackingusing an iPAC that is very conserving ofnetwork bandwidth by using map pic-tograms. This solution is in early testing, but it has been able to take users within 50meters of their target location startingmany miles away. It is very impressive, and not far from commercialization.

WDN: Are costs coming down to enable aubiquitous market?

R L: This situation resembles classicM o o r e ’s Law in the semiconductori n d u s t ry, in that more and more can bed e l ivered for less. Five years ago, forexample, the global positioning serv i c ecapability contemplated today could

h ave cost in the range of $150 per hand-set, which rendered it cost-ineff e c t iveexcept perhaps in ve ry high-end commu-nications dev i c e s .

Until recently, there has been positioningtechnology fragmentation that fenced inthe industry’s application developers, whocould not project large-volume launch ordemand—too many variations and incom-patibilities leaving too much risk. Thisresulted in deferred product developmentand artificially raised cost.

Now that the marketplace has adopted A-GPS as the de facto standard, we feel con-fident in forecasting rapid uptake andapplication alignment to the needs of ahigh-demand, ubiquitous market.

WDN: What are the costs now?

RL: Today, that original $150 per set costhas moved down to the level of a few dol-lars, below ten percent of the 1999 cost.Global Locate provides both high-tierwith fast update solutions for navigationand inexpensive solutions for broad con-sumer marketable services, such as the

popular Friend Finder.

We are focused on serving all the world’sleading air interfaces, which, until weundertook our development, were signifi-cantly underserved by the available posi-tioning solutions. And we are committedto providing the essential serv i c e srequired to create a cost-effective, ubiqui-tous capability that draws in all of thei m p o rtant contributors throughout thelocation-services value chain.

WDN: How has Global Locate positioneditself in this sector?

RL: Global Locate has developed a top-tier team of experts in wireless signal pro-cessing technology, GPS satellite, soft-ware and networking capabilities, and ismaking significant contributions to theuser experience in all tiers of service.

These services demand different featuresbut can be delivered from a single plat-form of the kind that GL has created. Weare working closely with the carriers andthe service providers, and we understandtheir timetables and demands.

ADC has partnered with Vanu, Inc. todemonstrate a softwa r e - d e f ined radio(SDR) at booth 4620. This solution com-bines Vanu Software Radio technolog ywith A D C ’s Digivance radio-ove r- fi b e rsystem to create an SDR solution for thewireless infrastru c t u r e .

“The adoption of flexible signal pro-cessing and RF system componentsresults in lower capital and operatingcosts,” says Andrew Beard, COO of Vanu,Inc. “This architecture accommodates

ADC, VANU SHOWCASE SOFTWARE-DEFINED RADIO SOLUTION FORWIRELESS INFRASTRUCTURE

seamless network evolution, relying oninstalled radiating points to deliver ablend of current and future RF serviceswhere and when they’re needed.”

ADC’s wireless roadmap ensures thatt o d ay ’s architecture generates reve n u enow, while adapting to future demands byusing base station hotels and a digitalplatform. Today, Digivance LRCS enablesradio capacity to be centralized at a con-venient location and distributed to smallremote units to provide service within

buildings, cities and beyond. This product digitally transports RF

signals from base transceiver stations (BTS)to remote locations inside buildings, urbanc a nyons or tunnels. The digital format alsoaccommodates future technologies as theyare developed and deployed to meet userdemands on the network.

Vanu Software Radio uses adva n c e dengineering techniques to implement all thesignal processing for wireless communica-tions systems in software, making it confi g-u r a ble and adaptable to any type of wirelessp l a t f o rm. The softwa r e ’s portability allow sVanu Software Radio to quickly move thesoftware onto new processors, takinga d vantage of the faster processing speeds.

As processor speed increases, thecost of Vanu Software Radio base stations

decreases. Wireless operators will nolonger need to upgrade their hardwareregularly in order to keep pace with newlyreleased technologies and standards.

“Our approach places the remote trans-c e iver at radiating points in the netwo r k ,a l l owing all signal processing to be done atthe host end,” says Gary Spedaliere,Director of Wireless Products for A D C .

“The result is that with base stationhotels installed today, carriers can deliverthe coverage and capacity their customersdemand right now. In addition, carrierscan easily deploy future technologies asthey become available, because the digitalRF transport is in place.”

For more information, visitw w w.adc.com and www. vanu.com or stopby booth 4620.

Yo u ’ve probably just wa l ked through thes h ow floor amazed at some of the new tech-n o l ogies. But what may be even more amaz-ing is figuring out how you can deploy thist e c h n o l ogy when your capital budget hasl i ke ly been cut by 10, 20, or even 50 percent.

N ow, the question is often not how tobuy new equipment but how to stretch cap-ital budgets and get more use out of theassets already ava i l a ble in the network bymanaging them in a new way.

First, chances are you have atremendous amount of cash tied up in

SOMERA DEMONSTRATES ASSETMANAGEMENT SOLUTIONS TOREDUCE OPERATIONAL COSTS

u n d e r-utilized assets and excess inve n t o-ries sitting idle on your balance sheet. You can either continue to depreciatethese assets or seek out channels inwhich to dispose of these assets.

Somera is a company with variousconsignment, purchase and exchange pro-grams designed to address this very prob-lem. By implementing one of these strate-gies, the financial return gained can beapplied toward the purchase of equipmentand services needed to run your networkefficiently and cost-effectively.

Another emerging strategy is the use ofr e d e p l oyed equipment as part of the net-work management and build-out strateg y. Acommon misnomer is that redeployedequipment is necessarily “used” or outdat-ed. Although it is like ly that the equipmenthas been successfully used in a previous net-work application, “redeployed” also refersto “new in the box” equipment that mayh ave been acquired from surplus or unwa n t-ed equipment inve n t o r i e s .

When used in conjunction with newequipment, redeployed equipment canreduce the overall cost of network opera-tions. A redeployed solution can be cus-tomized and configured to your specificrequirements and tested and fully war-ranted to perform to original specifica-tions. So if you’re looking for a provenalternative to a new-only solution that

meets your budget and network needs, redeployed may be the answer for you.

Somera is an industry leader in sup-porting the asset management strategiesdescribed above. These solutions are par-ticularly important as operators seek toreduce capital expenditures, lower operat-ing costs and unlock under-utilized equip-ment assets on their balance sheet.

S o m e r a ’s equipment and serv i c e sofferings provide the value, quality andreliability necessary to help telecom oper-ators address these important issues. Thecompany has developed an impressivebase of over 1,100 customers worldwide, including industry leaders from each seg-ment of the telecommunications market.

Batteries are blamed for most probl e m swith cell phones. To make the customerh a p py, the battery is replaced—often with-out testing. The returned batteries are sent tothe manufacturer or are discarded, but infact, most of these presumably faulty batter-ies can be restored with a battery analy z e r.

To this end, Cadex Electronics hasd eveloped QuickTest, a program that isc a p a ble of checking batteries in only three

QUICKTEST FROM CADEX BRINGSMORE THAN 80% OF ‘DEAD’ CELLPHONE BATTERIES BACK TO LIFE

minutes. QuickTest is built into the CadexC7200 and C7400 battery analyzers, wh i c halso charge, cycle, condition and boost bat-teries that appear dead due to low discharg e .

The Cadex C7400 battery analyzer withQ u i c k Test provides a reliable solution forreducing battery returns. More than 80 per-cent of returned batteries can subsequentlybe repaired and returned to the customers.

The patent-pending QuickTest wo r k s

on inference technolog y. Multiple va r i a bl e sare fed to the micro controller, “fuzzifi e d ”and processed through parallel log i c .

Q u i c k Test uses battery - s p e c i fi cmatrices that are obtained with the ana-lyzer’s trend learning process. The abilityto learn lets the system adapt to new bat-teries in the field. The matrices are storedin the Cadex SnapLock Battery Adapters, which automatically configure the ana-lyzer to the correct battery setting.

Battery Adapters commonly includethe QuickTest matrix at time of purchase. If missing, the matrix can be added in thefield by scanning a few batteries with theanalyzer’s Learn program.

The battery C-Codes can be copied to

other adapters, erased and reentered with af ew strokes on the analy z e r ’s keypad. T h erequired charge level to perform QuickTe s tis 20–90 percent. If outside this range, thea n a lyzer automatically applies a briefc h a rge or discharge, and the service time isprolonged accordingly.

The two-station Cadex C7200 serve sstorefronts while the four-station C7400helps with larger projects. Custom BatteryAdapters are most practical for serv i c i n gcommon batteries or when trained staff isnot ava i l a ble. The universal Flex A rmadapter accommodates less-commonpacks. BatteryShop software allows thea n a lyzer to be controlled from a PC andp e rmits the storage of test results.
