| JCC MetroWestAdler Aphasia Center

THE ADLER APHASIA CENTER AT JCC METROWEST welcomes people of all ages who have been diagnosed with aphasia.

Contact Wendy Greenspan, Program Director, 973-530-3981 ([email protected]) for more information and to set up a tour.

ADLER APHASIA CENTERA Place of Reconnection,

of Rediscovery, of Recovery.

Welcome to the Adler Aphasia Center- a place of hope. We are a resource for people with aphasia, their caregivers, and the community. Through our innovative group therapy led by licensed speech-language pathologists, we provide a stimulating environment to im-prove communication and cognitive skills and strengthen social connections to help you live a fuller, richer life.

How do we help people with aphasia and their caregivers?

Through group activities, the arts, technology, and fitness and caregiver support groups, our programs help our members and their families reconnect with life by:

• Improving communication skills

• Exercising cognitive skills

• Building self-esteem

• Making social connections

• Building strategies to help families meet the challenges of aphasia

How is the Adler Aphasia Center structured?

• Members with aphasia participate in 3 groups a day

• Groups activities change by the semester, based on member interests

• The program meets on a semester basis, twice a week for 15 weeks (3 semesters a year)

What is the cost to attend?

The cost is $750 a semester ($25 a day). This is less than one-third of the Center’s actual cost per member. Scholarships are available- no one is turned away for their inability to pay.

What is a day like at the Adler Aphasia Center?

9:30am – 10:00am Enjoy a cup of coffee and a breakfast snack with fellow aphasia members

10:00am – 11:00am First group session meets

11:00am – 12:00pm Second group session meets

12:00pm – 12:30pm Lunch

12:30pm - 1:30pm Final group session meets

Sample groups include: Brain fitness games, computer labs working with language based software, skill-building handwriting and spelling, fitness, advocacy, Aphasia 101, current events, cards and games, jewelry and gift design.

Is long term rehabilitation possible? At the Center’s flagship campus in Maywood, research is being conducted that demonstrates that over a one-year period, our members with aphasia experienced a significant increase in functional language and perceived quality of life due to their participation in Adler Aphasia Center programs.

Major funding provided by The Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey. Partial funding pro-vided by Grotta Fund for Senior Care and The Hyde and Watson Foundation.
