The coaching staff is excited to have one of the largest and more talented freshman classes its had in years. Coach: Mike Adams (12th year)Last year's record: 12-8, lost in Eastern Class A semifinalsReturning players: Seniors — Quin Leary (6-2 forward), Sean Ford (6-2 forward); Junior — Nate Alexander (6-3 forward); Sophomores — Llewellyn Jensen (6-5 forward), Ian Mileikis (6-1 guard).Key losses: Ian Therriault (6-4 guard), Omar Haji-Hersi (6-3 forward), Aaron Crenshaw (6-3 center).Promising newcomers: Seniors — Mahad Mohamed (6-1 forward), Calvin Willette (5-9 guard); Sophomores — Kaleb Main (6-2 forward), Luke Sterling (5-6 guard).Outlook: A nice mix of players, including three starters and five of last season's top eight, return to lead the Eddies' push for a fifth Eastern Maine title game appearance in six years. The Leary name is recognizable for many reasons, and Quin is a four-year standout and one of the top players in the league. He is ready and willing to share some of the responsibility this season with a group of players who have the previous season and a solid summer under their belts for growth. Ford and

Alexander are solid all-around players. Keys for EL are not to become too reliant on Leary and for the sophomore class of Jensen, Mileikis and Main to step up its contributions.Coach's comment: “I hope we have enough of a mix between size, athleticism, basketball IQ and competition among our own players for spots and time to push hard enough to be playing our best basketball possible in February.” — Coach Mike Adams

Outlook: Lewiston returns three players who saw starting time on a team that reached the KVAC championship game, including leading scorer Thomas. Farrar is excited about the talent and versatility of his newcomers, whom he calls “the biggest bunch of basketball junkies I have had here at Lewiston.” Lewiston lost some size to graduation and will need to compensate with quickness. The experience of competing in tough games against Hampden, Edward Little, Lawrence and Bangor the past two seasons should continue paying dividends.

The Blue Devils will be looking to fill those voids to get a crack at their first indoor KVAC and state titles. Lewiston will be picking up a lot of points in short sprints and distance. The girls’ team is returning almost its entire squad, but the team stills has a young base. The girls’ team has returners in all events and is looking to pick up points across the board to move up from last year.

Outlook: The concept of success breeding success seems to apply to Di-rigo, which lost four of its starting five from the Class C champions but re-mains a force in the MVC and the state. The Frost brothers and Babb should supply plenty of offense. Ross is a su-perb defender. Dirigo’s reinforcements saw plenty of varsity playing time in a slew of one-sided games last season, and the Cougars had the top JV team in the league. It all adds up to a likely run at a fifth consecutive regional title.

Theriault is perhaps the most dangerous outside shooter in the con-ference. The point of emphasis in Danylik’s new system is defense, and so far he likes what he sees. The Falcons don’t have much size, so crashing the boards will be essential to their success. Coach’s comment: “The kids have done a great

Outlook: The Falcons will build around four wrestlers — Burgess, Jacques, Gill and Nate Boucher — who placed in the top four at states a year ago. Thornton was seeded to score points, as well, before he was side-lined from that meet due to illness. Beyond that group, Mountain Valley is relatively young in terms of varsity mat time. Bean is hoping for a couple of a late arrivals that would bolster the team considerably. the bulk of its roster for the sec-ond straight season. Hupper was a three-year starter and the team's top scoring and re-bounding threat. The Roadrun-ners have some quickness in the backcourt and some muscle in the paint, and many of their key contributors are coming off a successful soccer season. They hope that taste of winning translates to the hardwood, where Mt. Abram aims to be a playoff team for the first time in many years.
