Lady Warriors looking for 13th straight SHL title

By Ritchie ButlerThe Brown County Press

The Eastern Lady Warriors willbe looking for their 13th consecu-tive Southern Hills League titleunder new direction this season.Gone is longtime coach RichardKiser. Taking Kiser’s place at thehelm is his former assistant, JohnBurrows.

“We’re not going to vary toomuch from what we’ve beendoing,” said Burrows. “I’vecoached these girls since theywere freshmen. They stick togeth-er and are good kids. They getalong really well.”

The Lady Warriors lost twoseniors from a team that finished16-6 and won the SHL big divi-sion title a year ago.

Returning for another season onthe hardwood are seniors ShaylaBlack, Andrea Neu, AmberYockey, Christina Burns, EmilyTatman, Haley Malott, LaurenBallou and Leeza Rickey alongwith junior Allison Prine.New to full-time varsity play

are juniors Haylee Neu andAndrea Tracy along with sopho-mores Maria Johnson and TressieLewis.

The Lady Warriors’ strengthsshould be depth and experiencealong with a good mix of perime-ter and interior play.

“Amber did not play a whole lotlast year due to injury,” saidBurrows. “She’ll make a differ-ence. Allison returns at the point.”

“We’re quick and have somegood perimeter players. We alsohave some size. Christina hasplayed well this summer. I ampleased.”

In the early going, Eastern isworking hard on half-courtdefense and offensive execution.

“Our half-court defense can bebetter,” said Burrows. “We alsoneed to be more crisp on offense.

We are also working on condition-ing to help our depth and preventpossible injuries.”The first-year head coach thinks

the Southern Hills League will becompetitive.

“North Adams and Lynchburgare tough year after year,” saidBurrows. “Their kids play prettyhard. We should be there compet-ing for another league title.”

In the small division, whichEastern will play each opponentonce, Burrows thinks all teamswill be improved.

“Fayetteville should be goodand Fairfield will be okay, evenwith their lost players,” saidBurrows. “Manchester has some

experience and could give every-body trouble.”

The Lady Warriors open theseason the day after Thanksgivingwhen they travel to Paint Valley totake on Athens.

Other non-league opponentsinclude McClain, St. Patrick,Georgetown, and in the BrownCounty Tournament, Fayettevilleand possibly Western Brown.

“The kids have worked hard,”said Burrows. “We’re looking for-ward to getting things going.”

The Broncos will be playingwith a new point guard this year, and Williams hopes that gooddecision-making will be par forthe course.

“We need someone to makegood decisions and take care ofthe ball,” said Williams. “We havekids who can score, but we need tobe strong with the ball and executeoffensively. We must get guysused to playing in the team con-cept.”

In the SBC American Division,Williams sees the race for the top

being a tough one.“Clermont Northeastern has

everybody back,” said Williams.“Bethel has two good playersback. Goshen has a good pointguard. I think we can be right inthe hunt.”

Although the Broncos do nothave one standout big playerinside, they can go with a big line-up at times.

“We have some options to makesize overall,” said Williams. “Wecan go big on the perimeter. Wehave depth, so we will be able tomix it up. We have competition ateach position for the first time.”

Rebounding is a concern, as italways is, but the Broncos heldtheir own last season when under-sized against most opponents.

“I am hoping we will still beable to crash the boards,” said

Williams. “We will play up-tempoif we can. Rebounding anddefense will lead to that.”

In non-league competition, theBroncos will face Glen Este,Harrison, Amelia, Hillsboro, EastClinton, Blanchester and Clinton-Massie. The Broncos will alsoplay in the Brown CountyTournament.

“If we can be efficient andsmart with the ball, we’ll lookgood.”

Warriors hoping to reload after losing 7 seniorsBy Ritchie ButlerThe Brown County Press

The Eastern Warriors, under thedirection of 16-year coach RobBeucler, are looking for ways tofill the void of losing sevenseniors off a team that finished 18-5 and captured Southern HillsLeague, sectional and district titleslast year.“We lost a lot,” said Beucler.

“It’s hard to tell where we’ll go.We did get some of those youngkids in last year and that willhelp.”Returning for the Warriors this

season are senior Clint Black, juniors Brett Stout and JordanPayne and sophomore ChaseLawson.“Jordan is the only player back

with experience,” said Beucler.“He’s a good shooter and willhave to be a leader. He will needto be our primary scorer.”“Brett will probably start. He

gives us some quickness and hasworked on his game this summer.”“Chase played at the end of last

year. He has a lot of talent and will

give us quality minutes.”“Clint played some last year. He

will play inside and help on theboards. He has worked hard thisfall.”New to full-time varsity play

are seniors Jesse Whitaker, JohnYork and Mitchell Sharp, juniorsBrandon Belcher, Conner Purdin,Daniel Faul and Danny Hicksalong with sophomore JoshuaBoudreau.“Conner played some AAU and

will play guard for us. He is quickand will help at both ends of the

floor,” said Beucler.“Jesse will help on the boards.

York and Sharp will need to pro-vide leadership and give us goodminutes off the bench.”“Belcher and Faul will see

some time and need to give usgood defense.”“Boudreau is very athletic and

has worked this summer. He maystill split time between junior var-sity and varsity.”As always, the Warriors will be

strong defensively. Shootingshould also be a strength of thisyear’s team.“We need to develop a good

mental attitude,” said Beucler.Eastern also lacks overall size,

which makes rebounding a con-cern in the early going.“We also must show patience

offensively,” added Beucler. In the big school division of the

SHL, Beucler sees Ripley as theteam to beat.“Ripley has everybody back

and a lot of weapons,” saidBeucler. “They also have gooddepth. North Adams is young. Wealways have Lynchburg to worryabout.”In the small division, Beucler

sees Peebles, Manchester andFairfield competing for the topspot.“Overall, the league is pretty

good and will be very competi-tive,” added Beucler. On the non-league slate,

Eastern faces the likes ofAlexander, South Point,Georgetown, Hillsboro and playsin the Brown County Tournament.“We have a tough schedule,”

said Beucler. “This is probably

one of the youngest teams I’ve

had. How we grow will determine

where we go.”

The Western Broncos wrestlingteam returns two experiencedseniors in Tory Bauer and JustinDillinger, but second-year coachWendel Donathan will rely on ahost of new wrestlers to fill outthis year’s team.“We didn’t get a lot of wrestlers

back from last year,” saidDonathan. “But our two seniorsshould be gearing up for good sea-sons.”Bauer is No. 7 on the all-time

Western win list, was a state-qual-ifier two years ago, and has beenSouthern Buckeye conference

champ for three years.Dillinger won the SBC last sea-

son and was a district qualifier in2009-2010.“Justin has put in the time to get

better this off season,” saidDonathan. “Tory was a little dis-appointed with not making it backto state last year, so he will bemotivated. They are both greatkids.”Although experience is down,

the number of wrestlers through-out the program is increasing. TheBroncos have seven freshman onthis year’s team and the youngerkids are coming in to wrestle aswell.“I am really excited about our

program,” said Donathan. “Juniorhigh numbers are up. The youthprogram is coming along. the kidsare eager to learn and are workinghard.”In the SBC, Donathan sees New

Richmond as the team to beat.“New Richmond won the

league last year and returns a lot ofyoung wrestlers,” said Donathan.“We will make it interesting in theleague. Our goal every year is towin it.”The Broncos open the season at

FHS Lady Rockets shooting for another SHL title

By Ritchie ButlerThe Brown County Press

The Fayetteville Lady Rocketsare hoping to continue their domi-nance of the Southern Hills Leaguesmall school division and claimtheir fourth consecutive title undercoach Toby Sheets, who enters his23rd season at the helm.“Numbers are up,” said Sheets.

“We have 23 players on junior varsi-ty and varsity, which makes for acompetitive attitude.”Experience will be a definite ben-

efit for this year’s Lady Rocketsteam who finished 16-6 last year, won the SHL, and lost only onesenior to graduation.“Four returning starters brings a

bunch of leadership and experi-ence,” added Sheets.Key players returning for

Fayetteville include seniors ShelbySheets, Jill Ryan, Desiree Dutro andEmily Stahl along with sophomorepoint guard Ashley Scoggins.Shelby Sheets averaged 18.2

points per game and 7.1 assists pergame last year. She is also just 517points shy of the school’s all-timescoring record and 66 assists shy ofthe all-time mark. Shelby was alsothe District 16 Division II player ofthe year last season.Dutro, who will play in the post,

averaged 9.2 points per game last

year.Shelby Sheets, Dutro, Ryan and

Stahl were all starters a year ago.In addition to returning five play-

ers with considerable experience, the Lady Rockets will also featurejuniors Brianna Plapp and AmandaO’Donnell, sophomores CheyenneRamey and Abbey Rowe along withfreshmen newcomers Megan Eyreand Makayla Rosselot.“Adding Makayla has already

been beneficial,” said Sheets. “Shebrings outside shooting, ball-han-dling and aggressive defense to analready solid lineup.”

In addition to experience, theLady Rockets should also havetremendous depth.“I think I will be able to trust

more than just six or seven playersthis year,” said Sheets. “Which maybe a little different than in yearspast.”Fayetteville, with a good balance

of speed, quickness and size, willuse combinations of full-court andhalf-court defenses to force fastplay.“We have pushed the ball in the

preseason and will continue pushingthe pace throughout the regular sea-son,” said Sheets. “Abbey will helpwith that fast pace.”In the SHL, Sheets sees the big

division coming down to two teams. “Eastern will be very strong,”

said Sheets. “North Adams, although they lost Beasley, has a lotreturning and should be good.”In the small division, Sheets

thought Manchester, Fairfield andPeebles would be good. He alsothought Whiteoak would beimproved.“We should compete for the top

spot in our division,” added Sheets. On the non-league schedule,

Fayetteville will face Felicity,Williamsburg, Batavia, Bethel,Hillsboro, and will play in theBrown County Tournament.

Rockets know team play the key to successful yearBy Ritchie ButlerThe Brown County Press

The Fayetteville Rockets are hop-ing to build on last year’s strong fin-ish by using defense and team play.Gone from last year’s 8-15 team

are five players who accounted formost of the scoring and ball-han-dling duties.Returning for fourth-year coach

Darryl Iles are seniors Zach Durhamand Miah Call, along with juniorTrevor Clark and sophomore NickDurham.New to the varsity team are

seniors Chad Evans and JordanSchmidt, juniors Derek Peters,David Kranz, Michael Kranz andTanner Williams, sophomore R.J.Workman and freshman D.J. Iles.“They are wanting to be here and

they show up to work,” said Iles.“They are really good at playing asa team. That’s what we’ll need. Wealso need the ball to fall for us thisseason.”Expect the Rockets to utilize their

depth, quickness, defense and speedto be successful. In the early going, Fayetteville

has been working on getting qualityshots. Because of a lack of size, the

Rockets are also concentrating onrebounding.Look for the Rockets to use a

variety of defenses and offenses, depending on the opponent.“We’ve been working in a little

bit of everything,” said Iles. “We’regetting a good grasp of our offense.”According to the Rockets’ coach,

the Southern Hills League will betough.“Peebles still has a lot of play-

ers,” said Iles. “Manchester hasBlevins, Fairfield has Cox andWhiteoak has Michael. We don’thave a standout, so we’ll have towork together.”In the big division, Iles sees

Ripley as the team to beat.“Ripley has everybody back,”

said Iles. “Eastern lost a lot, but theyalways play hard.”

“We are here to compete. I thinkwe can be in every game.”On the non-league tilt,

Fayetteville faces foes likeBlanchester, Williamsburg, Felicity,

Batavia and Bethel. The Rocketswill also play in the Brown CountyTournament.“The younger guys are going to

push the older guys,” added Iles.

“Our seniors will provide stability. We have a busy couple of weeks toget ready, but I think we will bewell-prepared this year.”

Lady Broncos trying to overcome heavy losses

By Ritchie ButlerThe Brown County Press

The Western Lady Broncos aretrying to overcome heavy lossesfrom last year’s Southern BuckeyeConference champions. They willdo so under the direction of first-year coach John Kirschner.“I appreciate the opportunity to

coach here at Western,” saidKirschner. “I am excited aboutpractice each day and I’m havinga great time. We have a great staffand get all kinds of support. thereis a lot of pride here.”The first task is trying to

replace six players lost to gradua-tion off a team that finished first inthe SBC with an overall mark of17-4. Kirschner, who coached thefreshmen team last season, returnssenior Danika Ratcliff, juniorsMorgan Wright and ElizabethCarter and sophomores KylieGarrett and Delayne Seigla.New to full-time varsity play

are seniors Calleigh Olson andKayla Barger, junior BrittanyPalmer, along with sophomoresHannah Wiesenhahn and TyHenry.“We are young and inexperi-

enced,” said Kirschner. “We needthem to grow up quick. They havestruggled, but improved, in thepreseason.”Look for the Lady Broncos to

play man-to-man defense andhave a balanced offensive attack.“We haven’t changed a lot from

last year, save a few wrinkles,”said Kirschner. “They play welltogether. They are tight-knit andunderstand team play. They accepttheir roles very well.”Western has a lot of young tal-

ent, so expect the Lady Broncos tohave good balance offensively.“We can score, but we need the

balance,” said Kirschner. “Wehave many threats on offense. Theyoung kids are talented and verydeep, but we must get them expe-rience. Danika and the two juniorsprovide strong leadership.Calleigh leads by working hard. She can be a shut-down defender.”

In the SBC, Kirschner sees theAmerican Division as being verytough.“In the league, Georgetown is

the cream of the crop,” saidKirschner. “We don’t play them ina league game, but we face themin the Brown County Tournamentand in a non-league contest.Amelia is a newcomer, so theycould be good. Bethel has a lotreturning. Our division will bevery tough.”In addition to facing

Georgetown, the Lady Broncosnon-league tilt includes Milford,Eastern, North Adams andFayetteville.Helping Kirschner on the side-

lines will be Haley Bogan andKyle Fender.“We have a young staff, full of

knowledge,” added Kirschner.“Which will help us develop theyounger kids.”The Lady Broncos open the

Blue Jays hoping experience, depth will lift them

By Ritchie ButlerThe Brown County Press

The Ripley Blue Jays areloaded with experienced playersthis season. That experience anddepth is what 12th-year coachMike Kennedy is counting on topropel the Jays to a league title.“I feel like we really have eight

or nine players with varsity expe-rience,” said Kennedy. “Five ofthem have a lot.”The Blue Jays lost three players

to graduation off a team that fin-ished second in the Southern HillLeague with an overall mark of13-9. Returning from that team areseniors Jay Woodruff, Jarrin Taul,Ravye Williams and DeMarcoWashington, juniors JordanMitchell, Riley Saelens, JessePrince, Michael Haley and Loganperkins.New to the mix are seniors

Michael Fegan, Jordan Zweigart,Johnathan Kessel and TimmyWhaley, along with sophomoreDonte Bennett.Look for the Jays to use their

quickness, athleticism, shooting, depth and experience on the court.“We should be able to get after

it defensively,” said Kennedy.“We have depth and experience, which should help.”In the early going, the Ripley

squad is working on patience, making good decisions, rebound-ing and taking care of the ball.“We need more patience at

times,” said Kennedy. “We’reworking on making the extra pass. We’re still not big, so reboundingis a concern.”In the SHL, Kennedy sees

North Adams and Eastern as theteams to beat.“Hopefully, we’ll be right up

there somewhere,” addedKennedy. The veteran coach also sees

Peebles, Manchester and Fairfieldas being very “tough.”The Blue Jays have a formida-

“We pride ourselves on defense,”said assistant coach Mike Jennings.“We are, in a word, young. We aregoing to have to be aggressivedefensively.”

The G-Men lost a lot of scoringand ball-handling to graduation, butdo have four returning players.Back are seniors Cody Drake, TylerFletcher, Ben Cropper and AlexOtto.

“We want the older guys to pro-vide the leadership and get theyounger players going,” saidJennings.

Although the G-Men are young, they should have a lot of depth andhave some skill.

“We should be more balancedoffensively,” added Jennings.“Drake, Cropper and Otto all hadsome good games last year.”

New to varsity competition aresenior Chris Worthington, juniorsKyle Jodrey and Austin West, sophomores Tommy Stenger, QuinnSandlin, Logan Lucas, JansonFlorence, Tom Cropper and NathanLewis, along with freshman Bruce-Derrick Williams.

“We are very young overall,” saidJennings. “Williams and Lewishave decent sized bodies and areimproving everyday.”

Look for the G-Men to mixthings up defensively and offensive-ly this year.

“We will see more intensity andbalance,” said Jennings. “The kidsneed to make the extra pass andlook for someone to score. It couldbe someone different every night. We also need to score out of ourdefensive transition.”

In the National Division of theSouthern Buckeye Conference,Jennings sees Blanchester andWilliamsburg as the teams to beat.

“Blanchester and Williamsburgwill be good,” said Jennings. “Theyhave a lot of experience returning.”

On the non-league slate,Georgetown faces Goshen, Bethel,Amelia, Western, ClermontNortheastern, Finneytown, Eastern,Fayetteville and Ripley. The G-Menwill also host the Brown CountyTournament.

times,” said Kennedy. “We’reworking on making the extra pass. We’re still not big, so reboundingis a concern.”In the SHL, Kennedy sees

By Ritchie ButlerThe Brown County Press
