Dear JCC Members and Friends,It’s finally cold outside…come and enjoy the warmth of the JCC --- your JCC --- as we grow and expand our reach and our impact on the entire community. In these pages you will find endless opportunities to gain strength in body and mind. Find a new class or activity this season that will enhance your life. Speak to our JCC staff and see how you can be more involved…maximize your JCC membership. We’re here to serve you and to make your JCC… the Place to Be!

The new year brings with it many anticipated events including: Falafel and Films (back by popular demand!) on January 26, annual Purim Carnival on March 4, Comedy Night on March 10 and Cokie & Steve Roberts who will lead a discussion about the interfaith Haggadah they created. We are also pleased to be bringing some of our great programs into Hunterdon County…watch for more details!

We are awaiting the final permit process with the town of Bridgewater to be com-pleted so that our dome will be erected and will enclose our outdoor swimming pool for the winter. Please stay tuned for the timing for this enormous develop-ment at the JCC. We are deeply grateful to our donors for their generosity and for getting us to this milestone. The vision and passion of our leadership and staff are contagious. The Swim & Trim Capital Campaign continues as we get closer to our next goal of locker room renovations and the expansion of our Fitness Center. Please call me to find out how you can get involved.

If you haven’t yet, please check out our new website, www.ssbjcc.org. Strengthen your JCC by doing your online shopping through our website… make sure you Like Us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter.

On behalf of the staff and the leadership of the JCC, it is my honor to wish all of you the very best for 2012. May the Chanukah candles burn brightly for us all and may they set the standard for light and hope for our entire community. Have a wonderful holiday season!

falafel & films iiisraeli short filmspresented by ma’aleh school of television film and the arts in Jerusalem

thursday, January 266:30PM•HostedbyJcc fee: $10/advance, $15/at the door

“Willingly”This film raises questions about love and commitment, about the advantages and disadvantages of “get” as a ceremony, and about Israel’s non-separation of religion and state. All Jewish divorcing couples, regardless of their religious orientation, must divorce with this ceremony in the State of Israel.

This film has been featured in several festivals around the world.

“A Jerusalem Tale”Lazer and Baila Hirsch, an older orthodox couple who have emigrated to Israel from America, struggle with financial hardship and general misfortune. Lazer, a Bretzlav Hassid, finds that his capacity for simcha (joy) is put to the test. The couple prays for a miracle, but miracles come in unexpected guises…

This film has been featured in Haifa Film Festival 2007 and the Vancouver Jewish Film Festival 2009

“Luz”This is the story of the unique relationship between Lisa and her adopted daughter, Luz. Unable to have children, Lisa adopted Luz from Columbia when Luz was three months old. The bond between them is special and despite their differences, the two have built a home which is loving and strong. Now 18 years old and troubled by questions of identity, Luz re-opens her adoption file while Lisa builds a home with her new husband. A dramatic new development in their lives threatens to destroy all the old bonds, and forces Luz and her mother to confront the basic questions: What is a home? What is motherhood? And what is the meaning of a blood relationship?

Awards include Best Short Film: International Film Festival Haifa 2007. Featured in the International Film Festival Haifa 2007 and International Documentary Film Festival Guandzo China 2009

Thursday,March29•7:00PM•HostedbyJccBuilding on dramatic interviews, powerful archival footage and first-hand accounts of the holocaust. “The Second Generation” explores the difficulties and challenges of growing up as children of holocaust Survivors. The rippling effects of their parents’ trauma impacted the Second Generation. Many of them feel as though they are “replacements” for lost family members-sometimes losing their own identities. Others feel a need to protect their parents. a fun introduction to the water for infants beyond the bathtub! Songs and activities help to develop basic arm and leg movements as well as learning to be comfortable getting their faces and bodies wet. Water safety and fun is also stressed. a swim diaper and rubber pants are required under the child’s swimsuit.

aquatots iiages 18 months to 3 years old

For those little swimmers who are already comfortable in the water! Songs and activities help infants and toddlers further gain confidence and practice their budding basic swimming skills. Starfish skills are introduced and children begin to work more with the instructor to get prepared to move to the next level of swimming and rely less on Mommy and daddy’s help. a swim diaper and rubber pants are required under a child’s swimsuit.

little starfishages 2 and a half-3 and a half

This course is for those little ones who can’t wait to put their faces in the water and splash around but aren’t quite ready to leave Mommy and daddy and move onto Starfish. This course will teach all of the Starfish skills with the comfort of their parents or adult friend in the water to help them explore the fun world of the pool. Emphasis will be placed on transitioning toddlers from parents to instructor and gaining confidence with their independence in the water.

proper supervision...is more than the lifeguards’ responsibility:

Children ages 4 and younger MuST have an adult within arm’s length of them at all times. Children ages 7-11 are permitted in the pool provided that a parent remains in the pool area. Children ages 12 and up are permitted to be alone in the facility. Thank you for helping us keep our pools safe and secure.

choosing the right swim class/levelIf you are unsure of a child’s level, you can bring your swimmer in to be tested or contact the aquatics director for questions. an in-person evaluation will ensure that your child will be in the correct class. It only takes a few minutes for an instructor to evaluate a swimmer’s level. Call the aquatics office for more information or to schedule an appointment to start your swimmer off with the correct class this session.

observation of lessonsWhile we recognize that parents are as thrilled about the progress of their children as the students are, we respectfully ask that parents remain seated on the 6 foot side of the pool bleachers for the duration of your child’s lesson. unless specified (such as a parent/child swim class) parents are not permitted in the water with their children as this is a distraction to the group as a whole. Thank you for your cooperation.

make Up policyGroup swim classes at the Bridgewater JCC enjoy a limited four student to one instructor ratio. Because of this ratio classes fill up quickly leaving not much option for a makeup class. In order to be considered for a make up class, a doctor’s note must be given to the aquatics Office. The aquatics department cannot guarantee that a makeup class will be available, however every effort will be made to accommodate the need of the individual and that there is space in the class desired.
