REMEMBRANCE SERVICE
WINTER 2018 NEWSLETTER
On Thursday 8th November, Ruskin Community High School held their annual Remembrance Service. They were delighted, as always, to be joined by Sergeant Bernard Morgan who is a friend of the school. Sergeant Morgan, special guests and the whole school paid their respects whilst Mrs Brett, Jodie Manning and Jack Nichol laid wreaths on the school memorial.
Our senior students attended the Remembrance Service in Crewe Town Centre on Sunday 11
th November. We laid a wreath to remember ex Ruskin students
who served in the war. In addition to our senior students, it was also really nice to see many other students at the event wearing their cadet and scout group uniforms.

Ruskin Christmas Concert—Wednesday 12th
December
Ruskin held its annual Christmas concert on Wednesday, 12th December. The concert started with a
Christmas by Candlelight event, where the audience visited a beautifully lit dining hall. They then listened
to a number of Christmas songs, before being led to the main hall by the singing group, as they sang Si-
lent Night. The concert followed this, with a number of solo and group musical performances, plus two
dance performances. There were many first time performances, such as Year 7 student Lilly Doering,
Year 9 student Molly Fletcher, Year 10 student Nene Vana and Year 11 students Natalia Wegrecka and
Olga Kubalewska.
All students performed exceptionally well and should be very proud of themselves. We would like to thank
our Year 11 Prefects who helped out on the evening. We would also like to thank everyone who came to
watch the performances. We hope you enjoyed the concert and thank you for your continued support.
On Thursday 13th December, Ruskin musicians were asked to perform at the St Stephen’s Church
Christmas Carol Service. There were three performances from Ruskin Year 10 GCSE Music students.
These were ‘Fur Elise’ by Nene Vana, ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’ by Paul Humphries and ‘Behind Blue Eyes’ by
Hannah Finch.
The service also included congregational singing of carols. The Ruskin students performed extremely well
and we thank those at St Stephens Church for asking us to take part.

Iqra Samad Year 11 The Geography trip to Shropshire was a very enjoyable experience as well as being educational. We learnt many different things such as measuring a river. We all wish we could go again!
Noorjahan Begum Ali Year 11 The Shropshire trip was very fun and educational. We learnt a lot and it was an amazing experience. We really enjoyed going round the town of Shrewsbury and going into the river.

HISTORY—GLOBE THEATRE TRIP
8 HIGH STANDARDS HIGH ACHIEVERS
Globe Theatre Trip 7th September
Each year, the History GCSE focuses on a different historic environment, this year’s site being
the Globe Theatre in London! Students in Year 11 had a trip down to London in September for
a specialist talk on the site followed by a fantastic performance of Shakespeare’s Othello,
starring no one other than the brilliant Mark Rylance as the (not so) “honest Iago”. The play
was enjoyed by students and should give them an extra boost for their Summer exams.
HISTORY — BLISTS HILL VISTORIAN EXPERIENCE
9 HIGH STANDARDS HIGH ACHIEVERS
This year, the History department ran a new trip to the Blists Hill Victorian Village for Years 7
and 8. Students had the opportunity to exchange their spending money for Victorian-style
currency at the Lloyd’s Bank and visit a range of Victorian shops and businesses to see what
they were like. They also experienced the ordinary working lives of Victorian Brits. These in-
cluded the Post Office, Doctor’s Surgery, Toy Shop, Squatter’s Cottage, Blacksmiths, Butchers
and Bakery. Students were astounded by the process of Victorian candle-making, with double
wicks which burn twice as bright (not for indoor use!). There was another particular favourite of
the site - the old-fashioned sweet shop! A real Victorian Christmas delight.

The STARDOME is an inflatable auditorium (7.5 m x 7.5 m x 3.5 m) ...
On Friday, 30th November 2018, approximately 90 students experienced the STARDOME activity which was delivered by Dr. Jamie Littlejohn from Keele University (from the Higher Horizon’s programme) The students were given a presentation in the STARDOME on ‘We Are Aliens’. The presentation explores the reality of searching for life on other planets, from an astrobiology perspective and was narrated by Harry Potter star Rupert Grint. The presentation focused on NASA's search for life on Mars using the Curiosity Rover.
Some of the Year 9 students who were involved ... Here are some thoughts from some
students in Year 9 who experienced the STARDOME presentation … ‘The Stardome was incredible! I found it really interesting, fascinating and Inspiring.’ Hollie Roberts (9BRL) ‘The Stardome was a great experience for me as I learnt a lot during the session. It was really interesting to learn where life came from and how we developed’. Tyler Pass (9SIL) Right to left Paolo Booth, Freddie Woolley, Nikola
Lasak, Erin Gilbert, Libby Wharton and Chloe Aitken
‘The Stardome was a great experience. I enjoyed it because I learnt about where life came from. I would really like other students to experience this opportunity’. Chloe Aikten (9RIC) ‘The Stardome was very engaging and I found being in the dome very immersive. The information and visuals were very good and Dr. Littlejohn made the complex ideas of the narration easy to un-derstand’. Daniel Eason (9SMB) ‘The Stardome was pretty cool. I learnt about the evolution of the Universe and where people came from’. Phoebe Leyshon (9BAT)

Bright Future Programme at Unilever (Port Sunlight)
On Thursday, 15th November 2018 five students (Freddie Woolley, Chloe Aitken, Erin Gilbert, Magdalena Pomorska and Ben Brandist) attended the Bright Future Programme at the research facility at Unilever in Port Sunlight with Mr A Gregory and Miss L Jones.
Right to left: Mr A Gregory, Erin Gilbert, Freddie, Woolley, Ben Brandist, Chloe Aitken, Magdalena Pomorska and Miss L Jones.
The students had a tour of the research facilities. During this tour, there were numerous demonstrations of some of the new technologies which Unilever are developing. The remit for these new products is very challenging. The new products must use sustainable re-sources, have biodegradable packaging, use less energy and produce less waste. The team have been given a project to complete in competition with a number of other schools. Project Choices 1) In a Bit of Hot Water: Design a product which can help reduce water usage and also
the energy needed from heating water. 2) Breakthrough: No More plastic: Design and develop a skin/hair product that delivers a great experience, that is 100% plastic free. 3) Social Empowerment: Design a product that can help improve the life of the people who
make or source it.
The Unilever trip was incredible. We went to Port Sunlight to learn about how new products are developed. We first learnt about how packing is developed and we got to find better alternatives which can be recycled instead of going to landfill. Then we looked at the technology and coding behind Unilever’s websites. This technology is used by Unilever to choose scents by face detection. The computer could also predict the age of the person by face recognition and it predicted which type of dog we would be. Following this, we saw how Unilever’s products are for-mulated and we had a challenge to predict the thickest and thinnest liquid. In another lab, we made our own shampoo and we learnt about the ingredients which go into shampoos. The final session of the tour was with the media team and we learnt how the companies sell their products. In the afternoon, we started to plan our project. We designed the eco-friendly packaging and what our product would be like e.g. a bar or liquid shampoo. Erin Gilbert (9SMB)

Bright Future Programme at Unilever (Port Sunlight)
I thought that Unilever was an amazing experience. The day gave me ideas for what I would like to do in the future. I really enjoyed learning about STEM subjects – especially technology. It was a great opportunity to meet people from industry. I would recommend this event to all students. Ben Brandist (8MAN)
I think that the Unilever trip was an amazing experience. It was fun to learn about how Unilever make packaging for shampoo and other products. It was fun learning about STEM subjects and hopefully will aspire to a career in STEM. Magdalena Pomorska (8MAN) The Unilever day was amazing. I got to experience lots of new ideas in an industrial set up. This was a great learning experience and has given me ideas for my future career path. I learnt about the impact of plastic packaging on the environment and how house-hold chemicals are manufactured. I also got some time to talk to the Unilever ambassadors about the Bright Future project. Chloe Aitken (9RIC)
The Unilever trip was an amazing experience. I learnt how everyday substances, like shampoo, are manufactured. I started to think about the project which is to create a product which does not use plastic for storage as plastic is very harmful to the environment. Freddie Woolley (9BRL)

· Tesco Express Crewe Arms CW16DN or
· Tesco Express Wistaston CW26PR
please vote for Ruskin’s SEND Breakfast Club!
Ruskin are proud to announce that we are Finalists in Tesco’s Bags of Help scheme. Tesco say……….
Our local community grant scheme uses the money raised from carrier bag sales to fund local projects across
Britain. Projects range from improving community buildings and outdoor spaces, to new equipment, training
coaches and volunteers, and hosting community events. Each time a customer shops, they will be offered a
blue token at the checkout and be able to vote for the project they want the money to go to. Every two months
we hand out grants of up to £4,000, £2,000 and £1,000 in 566 regions across Britain. This equals up to
£3,955,000 for communities monthly.
Through their work in the community, our Community Champions are able to raise awareness of this initiative
and encourage local charities and organisations to apply and offer support.
We've awarded over £56 million* in grants to over 18,000* community projects since launching in October
2015. Administering all these projects, in every community across Britain, does cost a little more than it would
to just give the money to one beneficiary. However, it does ensure customers get the opportunity to decide
where and how their money is spent. To make sure the money goes to causes that matter, we work with a
charity called Groundwork.
