I would like to make the following points about NAPLAN tests - LPPS usually does extremely well in these tests in comparison with schools of similar characteristics; However, these tests are administered on only three days out of the 200 that these children attend school; They provide a snapshot of how well the children perform in a specific test under rigid examination conditions. No consideration is given for the child who is ill, having an off day, or simply does not perform to the best of his or her ability under these conditions; The results that we receive from these tests arrive in late August rendering them virtually useless as a teaching tool. In other words, by the time you receive your child’s results, she/he has received an additional 3 months of instruction; LPPS does not exclude any child from testing on the basis of ability; While the tests provide a useful comparison from year to year, they offer very little in the diagnostic sense. Our teachers are constantly assessing their children to determine what they know and most importantly, what they need to learn. Please consider these points when you receive the results sometime in late August. PARENT LIAISON REPRESENTATIVES - Next week I will be running the first meeting of the Parent Liaison Group. So far we have only 17 classes which have nominated Parent Liaison Representatives. These people assist their teachers in delivering high quality education to their students. They perform many administrative tasks which allow the teachers to get on with what they are good at: teaching. If you are interested in doing this task and your child’s class is listed below, please contact the class teacher. Those classes currently without representation are: 1/13, 1/17, 2/19, 3/23, 3/24, 4/14, 4/16, 5/6, 5/7, 6/10, 6/11 CHESS CLUB MENTORS - This term I am again running Chess Club at lunch times for any interested students in the school. This year I would like some assistance from any interested adults who have a passion for the game. As the sessions run at lunch on a Friday, this would be an ideal opportunity for someone who has some spare time or who is retired and keen on helping out (I often have children tell me that they were taught chess by their grandparents). If you know of anyone who would be interested, please get them to call me on the school’s number. PARKING WHEN PICKING UP CHILDREN - Several parents have contacted me recently in regards to the parking situation around our school. Unfortunately, unlike other primary schools in the district, we are not located on a block surrounded by streets available for parking. We have limited space in Northgateway and even more limited space in Jackson Drive. In recent years we successfully petitioned the Frankston Council to institute 2 minute ‘Kiss n’ Go’ places where parents can quickly pull in and drop off or pick up their children. Unfortunately some parents are abusing this situation and park in in these areas for 30 minutes or more. We have also had other parents attempting to park in the main school car park which is reserved for Pool patrons and staff. May I make the following suggestions which could assist you in avoiding a parking problem - Walk or cycle to and from school. In this way we will reduce congestion, produce less pollution and get fitter to boot; Park further away in streets that are less crowded and walk to the school grounds to pick up your children (Bower Court is one suggestion); Pick your children up 5 to 10 minutes after the bell. Congestion usually reduces dramatically even ten minutes after the bell has gone. Please note that I have been contacted by the Frankston Council parking officers and told that they will be targeting the 2 minute zones over the next 3 to 4 weeks. CONGRATULATIONS - On Monday, Jai Culley (6/9 – football), Tayla Cant (6/10 – netball), Charlotte Wilson (6/11 – netball) and Owen Murphy (5/6 – soccer) were involved in the Southern Metropolitan Regional tryouts. They were one of 60 – 80 students selected from 360 schools, aiming to gain a position in the try-outs for the State Squad. All students gave 100% and performed well, but were not selected for the next stage. Despite not going through to the next stage, all students should be proud of their efforts and their success at making it as far as the Regional try-outs. Well done. CROSS COUNTRY NEWS: My apology; in the previous newsletter the results for the 11 Years Boys was incorrect and Amber Kamau’s (5/5 – winner of 10 Years Girls) name was mis-spelt.

It has been wonderful to see so many students attending the early morning training sessions and preparing for the District Cross Country. This will be held on Thursday 29th May at Baxter Park. Consent forms and money should be returned by Friday 23rd May. Please contact the Finance Office if payment cannot be made by this date. TERM 2 SWIMMING – PREPS/LL AND YEAR 5 STUDENTS - Students in Preps/LL and Year 5 will have their first session of swimming in Week 6 (Monday 26 th May – Friday 30th May). Payment and consent forms should be received by Friday 23rd May. Please contact the Finance Office if payment cannot be made by this date. This week Prep/LL parents should have received a Swimming Skills form. Parents need to fill this out accurately and return to their classroom teacher by Friday 16th May so that Kings can allocate the students to an appropriate group. YEAR 6 INTERSCHOOL SPORT - Due to Woodlands having to reschedule their Year 6 Camp, our first Year 6 Interschool Sport round is against Baxter Primary School. Some teams will be practising at home, as Baxter is a small school and is unable to ‘field’ all teams. (nb. The round against Woodlands will be rescheduled to a later date.) Round 2: 16th May – LPPS v Baxter * LPPS – Netball, soccer * BAXTER – Soccer * BAXTER PARK – Football SWIMMING CLUB – Wednesday mornings (7:45am – 8:30am) Students who wish to participate must complete a consent form prior to joining in. Students must be K9 level (or equivalent) or above to participate. Sue Burt/Franca Peluso
