GET YOURGREENS HERE!Home-grown vegies to keep you healthy this Winter.

Leafy green vegetables like kale, lettuce, parsley, rocket,

and silverbeet all thrive during winter and provide aconstant source of healthy winter greens and salads.

In winter many of us succumb to the ravages of cold and flu. This is where your vegie garden can really help. Home grownvegies contain higher levels of healthy vitamins, nutrients andantioxidants. By maintaining a regular intake of vegetablesthrough winter, youll be boosting your immune system andincreasing your resistance to colds and flu.

Even if you havent got space for a vegie patch, you can stillgrow some vegies in pots. Youll need a pot with a minimumdiameter of 300-400mm, fill it with Dawsons PremiumPotting Mix and youre ready to plant.

So get planting and remember the wise words of Hippocrates, who wrote Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.

Winter is time to plant: Artichokes, asparagus, beans, beetroot, broad beans, brussels sprouts, broccoli, broccolini, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, celery, chinese cabbage, chives, coriander, fennel, kale, leeks, lettuce, mint, onions, parsnip, parsley, potatoes (tubers), radish, rocket, rhubarb, rosemary, sage, silverbeet, spinach, spring onions and thyme.

Pest Watch: Snails and Slugs become more active duringthe wetter months of the year. So, keep an eye out and besure to protect young seedlings with a quality snail bait, likeenvironmentally friendly, Multiguard.

Caterpillars:Caterpillars can be devastating to crops likebroccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, brussels sprouts and other

winter vegies. Begin control as soon as damage or pests arenoticed. Spray with Success or use vegie dusts to control.

Take a look at our online vegetable fact sheet atwww.dawsonsgardenworld.com.aufor a usefulguide to establishing either a traditional soil basedvegie garden or starting a no dig straw based gardenplus a complete monthly vegie and herb planting guide.

Rose pruning is really the kindest cut of all. Its always an invigorating process for roses and youll be delighted with the flush of spring blooms. In Perthand in generally frost free districts, roses can be pruned any time from late Juneuntil mid August, while in cooler frost prone districts pruning can be left until lateJuly and August.

Dont get bogged down by all the technical descriptions of rose pruning. Its reallyvery easy, so dont be afraid to have a go. Remember roses are very forgiving plantsand some pruning is always better than nothing at all.

Most bush type roses such as floribundas, hybrid teas, miniatures, shrubs andramblers, can simply be cut back to half of their original height, using loppersor hedge shears. You can even use electric hedge shears. Then follow up byremoving any diseased older wood, crossing branches and branches growing intothe centre of the bush. Where possible prune out older canes in preference toyounger canes. Finish off by stripping off any remaining leaves and spraying withlime sulphur to help control mites, aphids and fungal spores.

CANE AND SPUR PRUNING OF GRAPE VINES.WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

To prune grapes requiring spur pruning, simply select the most vigorous canes andcut these back to short spurs of two buds in length. In spring, each of these budsproduces a cane, which will bear a number of fruit bunches. Ideally spurs shouldbe thinned, so that they are spaced about every 15-20 cm among the main arms(branches). The following winter the upper cane arising from the two-bud spur iscut off and the lower cane is pruned back to two buds to create the new spur.

In cane pruning, rather than pruning back to spurs, a number of the strongestcanes arising from the main arms (branches), are selected and these are pruned

back to 8-15 buds each. These canes are then twisted or tied onto support wires.

Citrus customers note:We also stock a rangeof semi dwarf Citrus. These grow about half

to two thirds the size of a regular citrus tree.In most cases depending on variety this willmean trees which will grow to between 2-3mon maturity. Semi dwarf trees can be readilygrown in large tubs or in the garden, can begrown at 2m spacings. These will begin fruitingearlier than regular sized trees. They are highlyproductive and have high nematode andphytophthora (root rot) resistance.
