WW2 Quiz

What in the world was the Blitz? It was a peaceful Saturday in London when there

was a humming sound coming from the sky. The whole of London looked up to see a group of planes heading for London.

It was German bombers. As the bombs fell, people started to scream and run for shelter. Britain was at war with Germany.

This was the beginning of the blitz, Black Saturday. The Blitz lasted for 57 consecutive nights.

This all so was the begging of world war 2

Why did the Blitz start?

Because Hitler, the leader of a German party called the Nazis, wanted a bigger empire for Germany and he was prepared to do anything and kill anyone that would stop him achieving his goal, including Britain and over 50,000 adults and children, cats and dogs.

Air Raids.Air Raids were introduced to protect thecivilians of London. When the air raid sirens

rang out people would run to a…

which would either be a Morrison shelter, a table with a metal cage around it or a Anderson shelter, a metal hut underground in the garden.

BlackoutsBlackouts were when all of the lights were turned

off so German bombers could not see London and other major cities.

One night a girl was going to a party, her mother told her to kick any man who talked to her in the shins. So on the way back home a man asked her where she was going, so she kicked him. But when she got home her mum said “Your dad’s really cross, some girl kicked him in the shins!” Basically, Blackouts were a disaster.

Barrage balloons.Barrage

balloons were inflated and tied down so that German planes could not fly too close to London because they would get tangled in the ropes.

Gas MasksGas masks were

masks that you put on during an Air Raid. For children Mickey Mouse gas masks were introduced to make them seem less scary. Babies were put in a type of bag and air would be pumped into it.

ARP Wardens

ARP Wardens would tell people in a blackout to turn their lights off and to help devastated families. They would also help children to get into a shelter in a Air Raid.

This was a poster advertising the need of ARP Wardens.

Doodlebugs and V-2’sIn June 1994 Hitler launched

V-1’s nicknamed Doodlebugs they made a horrible buzzing noise but when the engine cut out, the sound would cease and it would fall.

V-2’s were worse. They made the same noise but they were launched like rockets on a real launch pad!

EvacuationEvacuation was when all the children were taken to the countryside to escape from German bombers attacking London. Each child had to take a packed lunch and a label saying who they were. They also had to take a box containing a gas mask.

Winston Churchill was the morale raising Prime Minister during World War 2. Churchill was the man who started the V for Victory sign. He was the best.
