Words from Wang

As I sat pondering what to write in this article, my phone rang. It was my son Josh who

currently works as a pianist with the Toledo Opera “Opera on Wheels” program. A small group of

musicians (7 for the current production) take very condensed versions of famous operas into

grade schools where they perform and then have a question and answer session with the kids

and staff.

Josh had just returned from a performance which involved a very long, frustrating drive

with several delays (traffic, train, etc.). The time on the road was more than 3x the time at the

school. Frustrating as it was, Josh concluded that it was still very much worth it because, “These

kids in this very rural area might never be exposed to a classical art form if we didn ’t bring it to

them.” (He realizes the same thing is true when they perform in some lower income areas of the

inner city.) Opera on Wheels might be the only exposure some kids get to classical mu-

sic/theatre.

That got me thinking.

What if the ministries and mission of our church were the only exposure some people had

to the Gospel, to the good news of God’s love and forgiveness and grace? What if the good news

reached them because we expended ourselves – our time, our talent, our financial resources?

What if that even meant some sacrifice on our part? What if we were determined to get out there

with the good news of God’s unconditional love, even if it wasn’t easy?

Last spring, a speaker at one of the meetings I attended asked a question that went some-

thing like this: “Is the quality of life better in your community because your church is there?”

Is it?

This is the time of year we look ahead to our ministry and mission for 2017. There is a

great deal of need in our world. There are many people who need to hear the good news; many

who need to know that God is real and that God cares. We may be the only Gospel some people

encounter.

There is, therefore, a great need within this congregation. We need every person to be involved;

to give of themselves and their resources in whatever ways they can. Ministry in the 21st century

has its own set of challenges. We may all need to stretch; to extend ourselves in ways we never

have before. When we do – when we individually give of our time, talent, and resources, and

when we work together, we can make amazing things happen. We can make a difference; we

can touch lives in important ways.

Let’s choose to do that.

Peace,

Pastor Judy

REVERSE ADVENT SEASON

This year we want to remind ‘kids of all ages’ that giving is more rewarding than receiving, so we are collecting baby supplies in Honor of the Birth of Jesus.

We hope you will join us in this “Reverse Advent Season”

Matthew 25: 40 “Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me”
