We gather in the name of Jesus Christ to worship God and

by the power of the Holy Spirit do God’s work in the world.

PRAYER FOR PREPARATION

Almighty God, by the resurrection of Jesus Christ you broke the power of death and opened the way to eternal life. CALL TO WORSHIP (Responsive) Leader: Beloved church, behold the victory of our God:

Jesus, our Lord, has conquered the grave.

All: Christ is risen! Alleluia!

Leader: Sin and death shall reign no more.

All: Christ is risen! Alleluia!

*CALL TO CONFESSION

Leader: God has opened to us the gates of righteousness that we may enter through them. Confident in God’s love, let us confess our sin.

*PRAYER OF CONFESSION (Unison)

Lord Jesus, through the power of the Holy Spirit we have been raised from the waters of baptism to share in your glorious resurrection. Yet we have not lived as Easter people. We are unsure of your promise, confused about your will, and afraid in the face of danger. Like Mary, we weep at the tomb, but do not recognize your presence. Call us by name, risen Lord, that we may know you with confidence. Whenever we are tempted to fear death, give us courage to confess your Easter victory. Whenever we are distracted by petty conflicts, keep our minds on your reconciling love. Whenever we are overwhelmed by the power of evil, reveal again to us your triumph over the destructive powers of oppression. Forgive us our sin and let our lives be a testimony to your salvation through the love of God and by the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

*ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS

Leader: Listen, church: God who raised Jesus from the dead has not given us over to death. In the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven.

THE WORD

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION (Unison)

Almighty God, by the power of your Spirit roll away the stone and reveal to us the Word of Life. Amen.

FIRST LESSON: Jeremiah 31:1-6 1At that time, says the Lord, I will be the God of all the families of Israel, and they shall be my people. 2Thus says the Lord: The people who survived the sword found grace in the wilderness; when Israel sought for rest, 3the Lord appeared to him from far away. I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you. 4Again I will build you, and you shall be built, O virgin Israel! Again you shall take your tambourines, and go forth in the dance of the merrymakers.

(continued on next page)

5Again you shall plant vineyards on the mountains of Samaria; the planters shall plant, and shall enjoy the fruit. 6For there shall be a day when sentinels will call in the hill country of Ephraim: “Come, let us go up to Zion, to the Lord our God.”

This is the Word of the Lord!

Thanks be to God!

PSALM 118:1-2, 14-24 (Responsive)

Leader: O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;

his steadfast love endures forever!

All: Let Israel say,

“His steadfast love endures forever.”

Leader: The Lord is my strength and my might;

he has become my salvation.

All: There are glad songs of victory in the tents of the righteous:

“The right hand of the Lord does valiantly;

Leader: the right hand of the Lord is exalted;

the right hand of the Lord does valiantly.”

All: I shall not die, but I shall live,

and recount the deeds of the Lord.

Leader: The Lord has punished me severely,

but he did not give me over to death.

All: Open to me the gates of righteousness,

that I may enter through them and give thanks to the Lord.

Leader: This is the gate of the Lord;

the righteous shall enter through it.

All: I thank you that you have answered me

and have become my salvation.

Leader: The stone that the builders rejected

has become the chief cornerstone.

All: This is the Lord’s doing;

it is marvelous in our eyes.

Leader: This is the day that the Lord has made;

let us rejoice and be glad in it.

SECOND LESSON: Matthew 28:1-10

1After the sabbath, as the first day of the week was dawning, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb. 2And suddenly there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord, descending from heaven, came and rolled back the stone and sat on it. 3His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow. 4For fear of him the guards shook and became like dead men. 5But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid; I know that you are looking for Jesus who was crucified. 6He is not here; for he has been raised, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay. 7Then go quickly and tell his disciples, ‘He has been raised from the dead, and indeed he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him.’ This is my message for you.” 8So they left the tomb quickly with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples. 9Suddenly Jesus met them and said, “Greetings!” And they came to him, took hold of his feet, and worshiped him. 10Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid; go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me.”

This is the Word of the Lord!

Thanks be to God!

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH: FROM BRIEF STATEMENT OF FAITH (Unison)

Unjustly condemned for blasphemy and sedition, Jesus was crucified, suffering

the depths of human pain and giving his life for the sins of the world. God raised

this Jesus from the dead, vindicating his sinless life, breaking the power of sin and

evil, delivering us from death to life eternal.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER (Unison)

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

ONE GREAT HOUR OF SHARING OFFERING

• Would you like to help people in over 100 countries find hope and redirection? Our congregation has an opportunity to aid victims of crisis and disasters by contributing to One Great Hour of Sharing. The offering provides a way to share God’s love with those in need and to work together to build a better world. The special offering funds support to three areas of ministry: Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, Self-Development of People and the Presbyterian Hunger Program. Please consider giving generously to this strategic world-wide ministry! You may make your offering using the cashless methods below or mail your envelopes to the church office:

ANNOUNCEMENTS

• April, May, and June These Days Devotionals: If you would like to receive a copy of the via mail, please email or call the Church Office ([email protected]; 757-229-4235).

• While we still cannot gather in person, Williamsburg Presbyterian Church continues to offer a range of online activities to allow you to stay engaged with your worshipping community. In our attempts to respect "social distancing" but still maintaining "spiritual connection," we have created a new webpage where we are regularly updating the activities we have available for people each week.

Please check mywpc.org/online daily to see what activities are being offered for children, families, and adults. Currently, we have a special daily Zoom call for children and families at 11:00am, and various activities through the website and our Facebook page for adults. If you don't know how to operate Zoom, we have a link on the webpage to walk you through the program. We encourage groups who are able to meet on Zoom and stay connected with each other, and to take time to call people and write letters.

All of us are navigating new territory, and feelings of fear and anxiety are to be expected, but none of us are alone, and we are continuing to prioritize our values of worship, welcome, and witness even in this unknown time.

• Quarterly Giving Statements: The Resources Ministry would like to thank everyone for their faithfulness, generosity and continued financial support. In order to save administrative overhead and postage costs, all future quarterly giving statements will be distributed to your email on record with the church office. We are an Earth Care Congregation and this is another way to reduce our paper output and carbon footprint. The 1st quarter 2020 Contribution Statements should be distributed by April 30th. If you prefer to have your quarterly contribution statement mailed, please contact Martha Reier at 757-229-4235 or [email protected].

• WPC Presbyterian Women’s annual fundraiser luncheon update: Due to the cancellation of all in-person church events, Presbyterian Women will NOT be holding their annual mission luncheon as scheduled on Sunday, April 26, 2020. This year’s luncheon was to be the main fundraising platform for their 2019/2020 local mission project, collecting funds to offset (or potentially erase) the school lunch debt of any student who qualifies for free/reduced lunch who has a negative balance on his/her lunch account. Presbyterian Women still plan to continue with their fundraiser but they can’t do it alone! We need your help! You may make your offering using the cashless methods below:

• Go to mywpc.org/give or scan the QR code to the right. • Use PayPal send your offering to [email protected]. Checks can also be mailed to the church (made out to WPC, with “PW

local mission” on the memo line). This collection is more critical now than it was at the beginning of the school year, when PW

chose this as its fundraising project. With the COVID-19 outbreak, many parents of school children may possibly have lost their jobs (even temporarily), or have not been able to work with their students home from school, some having to make the difficult choice of going to work or paying for childcare. The struggle to bring lunch accounts onto the plus side may become real for many more parents than we realized at the beginning of the school year in September.
