Love’s Secret

Meaning

Love’s Secret follows a different theme than most of Blake’s poetry. It follows a theme of freedom, the freedom from jealousy, affection, desire and want. The poem address the freedom a person has when they remain “silent and invisible” and don’t let their feelings for someone else be known. When the speaker tells his beloved, he is rejected, leaving the reader with the impression that love is better left alone.

Usually Blake used a 4 stanza poem scheme. In Love’s Secret, he cuts out a stanza and uses a 3 stanza-4 verses scheme with a rhyme of A_B_A_B.

He uses a vivid use of metaphors, and personification. Death in this poem was called a “traveler” who “took her with a sigh” soon after she rejected the poor man who poured out his love to her.
