Importance of Wi-Fi Technology
Purpose
* The purpose of Wi-Fi is to hide complexity.* Purpose for study.* The main purpose of Wi-Fi are:
1. Faculty/staff, students. 2. Service will be provided for? Laptops, Desktops, cell
phones/PDAs, etc.3. Where users need wireless connectivity? Classrooms, offices,
outdoors, cafeteria, library etc. 4. How many devices need wireless access in each location? Cell-
phones/PDAs, Desktops Classrooms etc.5. Remove switches, adapters, plugs, pins and connectors & wire.
Topologies & Configurations
1. Access Point Based Topology
2. Peer to peer Topology
The client communicates through Access Point.
Access Point Based Topology
Elements of a WI-FI Network
▪ Access Point (AP)- The AP is a wireless LAN transceiver or “base station”
that can connect one or many wireless devices simultaneously to the
Internet.
▪ Wi-Fi cards- They accept the wireless signal. They can be internal and
external.
(e.g. PCMCIA Card for Laptop and PCI Card for Desktop
PC)
▪ Protect networks- Anti-virus software protect networks from uninvited
users and keep information secure.
PCMCIA Card (Portables)
USB adapter (outside)PCI adapter (inside)
Devices & Components
It connects the Desktop, Laptop by
MODEM, SWITCH & ROUTER
It consists network from Base Stations.

Which Standard is right for us?
•Operating Frequency2.4 GHz•Covers Signal Range 30 to 35 m•Distance Covered Up to 10 ft. 11 Mbps•4-6 Mbps (actual speed)•Available Bandwidthper Channel 20 to 22 MHz •Coverage limited to one room•It work from mobile phones and Bluetooth devices which can reduce the transmission speed.
•Operating Frequency 5.3 GHz/5.8GHz•Covers Signal Range 30 to 35 m•Distance Covered Up to 35 ft. 54 Mbps•15-20 Mbps (Actual speed)•Available Bandwidth per Channel 20 to 22 MHz•Supports more users per room•Excellent signal range

Wi-Fi Security
▪Without your SSID, people will not be able to join our Wi-Fi hotspot.
▪WEP stands for Wired Equivalency Privacy
▪ The common key lengths are currently 128- and 256-bit.
▪Web sites that offer secure connections
▪ Store data secure
A SPECIAL SECURITY SOFTWARE
Advantages ▪ Ease of Installation
▪ Widely available in public venues.
▪ User-friendly software.
▪ Security features
▪ Cost
▪ Reliability / Flexibility
▪ Security spectrum
▪ Speed
▪ Interference
▪ Degradation in performance
▪ High power consumption
▪ Networks have limited range
▪ Used to steal personal and confidential information
