Introduction
In an increasingly complex global environment,
Barbados competes with Puerto Rico as the best
place to do business in the Caribbean, but has a
poor macro economic climate. While highly
receptive to technology, Barbados is following, not
leading, the internet revolution in the region. To
stimulate business and encourage society to be
competitive, the government has a national
strategy to award entrepreneurial enterprise which
will benefit directly from our well-timed initiative.
Vision Statement
Consistent with this strategy, the commercial benefits of our Barbados
Entrepreneurship Foundation initiative are compelling:
•Domestically, universal WiFi access will give local business a competitive
advantage to engage more customers, more directly, thereby increasing sales.
•This efficiency will generate both consumer satisfaction and generate
developmentally advantageous goodwill towards business within the broader
consuming public.
•Additionally, internationally, this initiative will help build Barbados's brand as an
innovative and competitive economy in a region not known for its economic
vibrancy.
Strategy
Wifispottr.com is mapping the locations of newly available WIFI spots.
WIFI spots are the venues which have volunteered to assist the transformation of
Barbados into a 100% wireless island.

Technology
• What is the goal? The goal is to provide free wireless internet access to Barbados in the most effective and efficient way possible
• Creating Win/Win Scenarios – Happy Enterprises and Happy Wireless Users
• Technology exists• To allow you the entrepreneur to PROVIDE a
service – WiFi in this case• To allow you to easily, effectively and efficiently
MANAGE the service
Providing the WiFi Service
• What is involved in providing BASIC wireless access? • Internet Access (Bandwidth) • Wireless Access Point/Router(s)
• With this basic setup you CAN Offer open wireless internet access to the both your employees, customers and the public
Limitations of this basic set-up
With the basic set-up you CANNOT do the following:• Reserve bandwidth for your employees• Prevent the spread of viruses and illegal use• Ensure security of your corporate network.• Maintain “fair” WiFi access
• IT MUST BE MANAGED!
Managing your WiFi network
A wireless access point (AP) isn’t sufficient. You also need a firewall. A firewall can:• split your network into corporate and free wireless
and keep them separate. • control the total bandwidth available to each
network.• block file sharing traffic, or users who have
abused the service in the past.
Other Technical Recommendations• Set per-user bandwidth limits on your wireless AP. • Enable wireless client isolation. • If possible use a service that does not have any flow
restrictions • Size your wireless bandwidth based on the expected
number of SIMULTANEOUS users.
