ASHUDHDHI NASHAK
Vatsalya Foundation designed an incinerator
'ASHUDHDHI NASHAK' which is made
of terra kota. The basic material used made
it low cost and affordable for everybody.
The unique design made it easy for women
to dispose the used napkins in it. It does not
run require electricity to burn the contents. It
does not spread bad odor since it is made
from special clay. It is high enough to
protect it from stray animals. There is a
water channel around it which prevents any
insects or rodents from entering the
chamber. In the evening time some burning
splinter or paper has to be inserted in the
opening at the bottom. The things in the
chamber burn slowly inside. The ash falls in
the bottom chamber which can be removed
and mixed with the soil. Many people burn
the dried leaves from the garden in the open.
It sends smoke in the atmosphere. If it is
burnt in 'Ashudhdhi nashak'then the burning
will be controlled.
BIO TOILET
Bio toilets are the perfect GREEN „Flush
and Forget‟ toilet. These are an ideal fit for
both urban and rural areas where the
sewerage system does not exist or cannot
effectively reach or even exist. Bio Digester
Innovative Initiatives
or the Bio Tank is a multi compartment tank
which can be made of Stainless steel, Mild
steel, FRP (Fiber Reinforced plastic) or even
concrete/ brick and mortar. . It is an air-tight
tank with 3/4 chambers with inlet for fecal
waste and outlets for by products that is
water and methane gas. Night soil
degradation occurs through microbial
reaction which converts the fecal waste into
odorless water and methane gas. The tank is
requires only one time inoculum charging,
hence lifelong usage and does not require
cleaning, emptying or relocating. It can be
installed for household toilets, community/
public toilets/ toilets in schools or can serve
an entire locality by installing a single bio
digester tank with ancillaries as a an onsite
sewage treatment plant(STP).
Salient Attributes of the Bio Toilet a. DRDO certified bio degradation eco-
friendly technology for disposal of human
waste.
b. Comprises two components: anaerobic
microbial inoculum ( seed bacteria) and
specially designed fermentation tank.
c. Requires only one time inoculums
charging, hence has a lifelong usage.
Technology is environmental friendly,
maintenance free and efficient without
depending on conventional energy sources
e. Permits use of toilet cleansing agents.
f. Does not pollute the water table
g. No sludge formation
h. No requirement of septic tank , soakage
pit or sewerage system connectivity
i. Effluent is free from offensive odor and
safe for environmental discharge
j. Pathogen inactivation by 99%
k. Easy to install
l. Waste by products water and methane-
both reusable
Three places in Delhi where people are
successfully managing their biodegradable
waste using different technologies
1. Technology: Rapid composting
Raw material : 1: 3 mix of horticultural
and kitchen waste
Final product : Organic compost
Composting period : 15-20 days
Cost per household to set up the plant :
Rs.1, 350/-
Land required : 60 square meter (sq m)
How they did it : “We wanted effective
solid waste management within the
campus”, says Pratibha Jolly, principal,
Miranda House. In 2013, the college
invested 4 lakh in a plant to make organic
compost out of its biodegradable waste. It
tied up with Green Bandhu Environmental
Solutions & Services for this. Today, the
college produces 60 kg of compost every
day from its waste and use a bulk of its
compost in its gardens. The college earns
4,000 a month by selling the surplus
compost and saves 12,000 on transportation
of waste.
2.Technology: Excel composting
Raw material: Kitchen and horticultural
waste
Final product: Organic compost
Composting period : 15-20 days
Cost per household to set
up the plant: Rs.4,000/-
Land required : 300 sq m
How they did it: General Pool Residential
Accommodation Complex at New Moti
Bagh is a 110-acre campus housing 1,100
families. In 2013, Green Planet Waste
Management Pvt. Ltd started a waste
management plant in the complex. The
company invested 8 million to set up the
plant, which receives around 900kg of
horticultural waste and 700 kg of kitchen
waste every day. Being so expansive, the
plant‟s operators are struggling to recover
losses. Rajesh Mittal, CEO of the plant, says
the municipality should pay back the
communities that are taking care of the
garbage themselves.
3. Technology : EMI microbial solution-
based pit composting
Raw material : Kitchen waste
Final product : Organic composting
Composting period : 3-4 months
Costs per household to set up the plant :
Rs.45/- only
Land required : 30 sq m
How they did it : What distinguishes this
plant from the others is that the residents
themselves manage it. It was conceptualized
by the RWA with the help of non-profit
Toxics Link. The facility was set up at a cost
of just 70,000 a decade ago. The compost
facility was set up in a small unused corner
of the neighborhood.” Our Priority was to
get rid of the sell from the colony bins, “says
Shammi Talwar, joint secretary, RWA,
Defence colony. The RWA has trained two
rag pickers to run it and their salaries come
from the plant itself.

to conserve the natural wealth and protect
our environment," Modi said in a brief

Air pollution discolouring Taj Mahal:
Study
PTI | Dec 12, 2014, 12.43 PM IST
WASHINGTON: Airborne carbon particles
and dust are discolouring the Taj Mahal's
iconic marble dome and soaring minarets,
giving the gleaming white landmark a
brownish case, Indian and US researchers
have found." Our team was able to show that
the pollutants discolouring the Taj Mahal are
particulate matter: carbon from burning
biomass and refuse, fossil fuels, and dust -
possibly from agriculture and road traffic,"
said Michael Bergin, a professor in the
School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences
at the Georgia Institute of Technology.

China emits twice as much NO2 than
India: Study
TNN | Dec 16, 2014, 06.53 AM IST
PUNE: India and China are not only the two
most polluting countries in Asia but also
rank among the top polluters in the world.
However, China's nitrogen dioxide (NO2)
emissions are twice that produced by India,
says a recent study done by city-based
Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology
(IITM). The study, done in collaboration
with scientific institutes in Germany,
Canada and Turkey, was undertaken to
understand the impact of the increase in the
emission of NO (nitric oxide) and NO2
(nitrogen dioxide) over India and China, as
their increase results in raising the levels of
important pollutants such as ozone, nitric
acid and peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN).
