Wi-Fi Offload Vs Small Cells

Operates in unlicensed spectrum.

Infrastructure costs (chipsets cost, access

points, SaMOG boxes) are minimal

Operates in licensed spectrum.

Infrastructure costs, although lower compared

to installing a cell tower, is still substantial and

also require additional spectrum.

Wi-Fi Offload Small Cells

The TCO of building Wi-Fi networks is allegedly around a tenth of that of 3G/4G network equivalents.

Wi-Fi Offload required negligible investment from MNOs or service providers – compare this to the millions of dollars often required to purchase licensed bands.

Thus, the Wi-Fi and mobile industries are on convergent paths although it is likely to take a few years before the two technologies will be operating with end-to-end seamlessness.

ISSUES in Yesterday’s Technology:

• IPSec/IKEv2 required on UE (Client had

to be downloaded)

• Battery drain effect on UE and intensive

CPU processing.

• IPSec overhead & associated packet

fragmentation on WLAN air interface

• Poor user experience with Latency

associated with tunnel establishment for

short-sessions (e.g. MMS access)

• Multiple tunnels one for each service

Use Case Scenarios

Indoor Areas

• Most wireless data traffic

comes from indoor spaces

like offices, café, restaurants

• Offloading here can delay or

even avoid the need for

adding towers to high-density

service areas.

Outdoor Venues

• High Quality Data Services

for Subscribers

• Opportunity for incremental

revenue from ad-hoc users

• Will come at around 10% of

the cost of a new cell or cell-

on-wheels.

Large Area Hot Zones

• Transit corridors and large

urban downtown settings

challenge wireless

performance.

• Our solution leverages the

existing investments (like cell

sites).
