Why Students Should Attend Extracurriculars
By: Mara Spector
Did you know involvement in extracurriculars decreases the chances that students
will drop out of school? It is true. As a seventh grade student I strongly believe everyone
should be able to attend extracurriculars. Extracurriculars help students in many areas.
They help them socially, and it helps their academic performance. Extracurriculars also
help students get a jump-start on their future. Read on to learn how extracurriculars help.
One aspect that extracurriculars help is social. Many children and teens have
problems communicating with their peers. Extracurriculars help them meet new people.
The new people they meet from these activities will most likely be interested in the same
types of activities as them. By going to activities children also learn to enhance their
social skills. They increase their ability to communicate efficiently, and understand
others. These activities also develop a child’s ability to work with a group. This allows
them to work well with others and compromise. This leads us into how this helps with
college and future employees.
Did you ever think about how you would have a better chance at getting into your
number one college, or your favorite job? Well, extracurriculars help students gain skills
that employees and colleges look for. Like we talked about in the last paragraph, they
look for good team working skills. Team working skills are enhanced by extracurriculars.
But also need to be able to work alone, and lead your peers. These types of activities
allow students to become more organized and manage their time wisely. Students learn
how to manage their time because they have to fit in homework, family, friends, and the
extracurricular. Extracurriculars also help with academic performance. Read on to find
out how.
Did you know the dropout rate of highschoolers alone is 1.2 million? This rate is
still increasing. But when students become involved in extracurriculars their chances of
dropping out decrease. Students also earn better grades when they participate in
extracurriculars. One reason is because these activities reduce the amount of stress they
have. The final reason these activities help is they learn life skills. Some life skills cannot
be learned in a classroom, and extracurriculars are a good way for students to learn and
explore these topics.
Now that you learned about how extracurriculars help you social ability, your
future, and your academic ability, will you consider enrolling yourself/kids into these
activities? Remember these activities allow students to reduce stress and learn skills they
can carry with them throughout life. If you could decrease the chances of you/your kid
dropping out of school would you? You would probably to everything in your power to
help yourself/your kids. So, start today, enroll them in an activity! In conclusion, that is
why you you/your kids should attend extracurriculars!
