One evening last week, my wife was attending a PTA meeting so I decided to go get the kids and me some fast food. They wanted burgers, but I didn’t. I remembered that there was a sandwich shop near one of the burger chains. I’d had a salad from one of the sandwich shop’s other locations near my offi ce and I fi gured I’d get myself a salad and get the kids some burg-ers.

I walked into the sandwich shop at about 7:30 p.m. Other than the two employees, I was the only person in the store. As I walked in, the employee closest to the door not only failed to greet me, but averted her eyes from me and ignored me as she focused on some minor task.

The other employee threw an exasperated glance at her and greeted me. I selected a salad, waited for my order and then left with it. Later, I ate the salad and rated it as nothing special. But what sticks in my mind and the reason I will probably not go back to that shop was the way the employee refused to greet me when I walked in.

I tend to measure my customer service experiences using one of three categories:• Failed to meet my need• Met my need• Exceeded my need

The employee’s actions failed to meet my needs. The salad failed to meet my needs (I thought it was too heavy on lettuce and onions); however, the chain has half a dozen salads and I had liked the one I tried at the other store. I would have gone back, except that employee obviously didn’t care.

She could have met my needs by off ering me a smile and a “Welcome to ________.”

She could have exceeded my needs by greeting me in a pleas-ant manner, then engaging me in conversation as I waited for my order. This would have made the time pass more quickly for her and would have brought me back more often.

Greeting customers is usually the fi rst thing employees are taught, whether the business is customer focused or not. I hope the sandwich chain has hired secret shoppers and I hope they go to this store when this employee is working.

Especially in a tough economy, this won’t win customers. “Shop“ your own business and make sure it’s truly customer fo-cused. It will be worth it and your customers will appreciate it.

10 Easy Ways to Keep Fit at the OfficeAs a former desk jockey, I understand the pain and hopelessness of an 8 to 10 hour day seated in squeaky chairs, wearing e-leashes, while baking under rays of fluorescent lighting. However, this doesn’t have to preclude one from having a healthy and active lifestyle. If you follow the tips below, you’ll feel more alive and will likely be more productive; perhaps creating more free time to be spent in the great outdoors!

1. Get direct sunlight whenever possible

2. Leave your phone at your desk and walk detached for 5 to 10 minutes

3. Go outside and walk while returning calls or voicemails

4. Schedule walking meetings instead of doing lunch

5. Always take the stairs (hit them hard if you’re already in good shape)

6. Find a reason to get up at least once every 30 minutes

7. Do pushups and squats when nobody is looking

8. Do a few yoga poses when nobody can see or hear you

9. Tell everyone you work with you’re trying to live healthier and get some of them to join you!

10. Become the coordinator of your next corporate bonding event! Doing something from a group walk, adventure race, Tough Mudder (if you’ve got some ambitious colleagues), etc. will boost morale and give you some fresh water cooler material!

Although the office is not the ideal environment to spend 40+ hours of your week, our bodies are resilient. We can offset unna tural habits by making an effort to move. Keep in mind that activity is cumulative. If you can only squeeze in 5 minutes at a time, but can do it a few times a day, you’re “hitting your numbers” as they say!

I am pleased to announce the appoint-ment of Alfred DeCorte as our new Building Offi cial. Al, who has served as

the building/zoning offi cial for several Rhode Island communities during his 26-year career, replaces Fred “Ted” Sarno, who, as many of you know, retired this summer.

I am very pleased to welcome Al to our community and know he will do an ex-ceptional job of improving operations

and services in the Building Department to better serve our businesses and resi-dents. He not only has a great deal of ex-perience, but is also highly regarded by his peers throughout the state - and by residents in communities in which he worked - for his expertise, professional-ism and commitment to public service.

Al has served as the Town of West Warwick’s building and zoning offi cial for nearly four years. Prior

to that, he worked as an insurance re-construction services project manager/consultant. For 17 years, he was the Town of Smithfi eld’s building and zon-ing offi cial, and, before that, served as the Town of Lincoln’s assistant engi-neer and later as its building offi cial.

A married father of three, he holds a degree from the Community College of Rhode Island and is at-

tending the Facilities Manager program at Johnson and Wales University. He is an honorary member of the New England Building Offi cials Education Commit-tee and past president and secretary of the Rhode Island Building Offi cials As-sociation. Al is a former member of the Town of Glocester Zoning Board of Re-view and a past president and secretary of the Rhode Island Minimum Housing Inspectors Association. He also attends Annual International Code Council (ICC) meetings to vote on changes to Building Code.

Al, for his part, said he is looking for-ward to serving the citizens and businesses in our community. He

offi cially joins the Department Novem-ber 26.

Wachusett Brewery founders Ned, Kevin and Quinny developed a signifi cant ap-preciation for beer while attending Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Adventures in biking, canoeing, and hiking that led the trio to the northern New England states allowed them to visit some of the fi rst operating craft breweries. Armed with a “we can do this” attitude the three cast off from their careers in engineering and biology to found the Wachusett Brewing Co. in 1993. Wachusett Country Ale was introduced to beer fans of Massachusetts the next year after lots of experiment-ing to get the formula just right.
