Three Main Systems
Federal
Confederate
Unitary
![Page 7: Why do we have governments? With a partner, make a list of reasons as to why government exists.](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062421/56649e455503460f94b39e7d/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Unitary System•Central government
holds all the power
•Gives directives to lower governments
•Allocates power as they choose
•Example: Great Britain during Revolution
![Page 8: Why do we have governments? With a partner, make a list of reasons as to why government exists.](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062421/56649e455503460f94b39e7d/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Confederate System•Local governments hold
the power•Weak central
government•Promotes cooperation
between states•Often has voluntary
membership and states can leave
•Treaties often used to define relationships between the states
![Page 9: Why do we have governments? With a partner, make a list of reasons as to why government exists.](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062421/56649e455503460f94b39e7d/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Federal System•Central and local
governments share power
•Often times, a document outlines which powers each shares (CONSTITUTION)
•May have powerful central government, but it may not dissolve states
![Page 10: Why do we have governments? With a partner, make a list of reasons as to why government exists.](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062421/56649e455503460f94b39e7d/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Think-Pair-Share• Think
▫ Individually, write out the pros and cons of each system of government
▫Which do you think is best? Why?• Pair
▫With a partner, discuss the systems and come to a consensus on the best system.

• Share▫Class Discussion
![Page 11: Why do we have governments? With a partner, make a list of reasons as to why government exists.](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062421/56649e455503460f94b39e7d/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)

3 Branches of Government
![Page 30: Why do we have governments? With a partner, make a list of reasons as to why government exists.](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062421/56649e455503460f94b39e7d/html5/thumbnails/30.jpg)

court’s objections as guidance
![Page 36: Why do we have governments? With a partner, make a list of reasons as to why government exists.](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062421/56649e455503460f94b39e7d/html5/thumbnails/36.jpg)
